There are a lot of elements in Gilbert & Sullivan shows that don't necessarily make sense if you think about them too deeply. This is indeed true of one of their most popular shows, H.M.S. Pinafore. However, as usual, this does not take away too much from the fun of the show. This engagingly amusing show contains some of the pair's arguably most well-known songs, including "We Sail the Ocean Blue" and "I'm Called Little Buttercup."
New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players' current production of the operetta is another fine addition to the group's magnificent pantheon of renditions of the duo's shows. From the first moment when the curtain opens, and you get your first glimpse of that incredibly massive ship, you're off on a fabulous ride. The show is like a ray of sunshine and an antidote to today's extremely divisive and scary world. The voices are as beautiful as ever, the costumes bright and colorful, and the entire show is just a joy.
While the performances are uniformly good as always, there are a few that stand out. Artistic Director of the company, James Mills, is hilarious as the doddering old Sir Joseph Porter KCB. Dante Bergeret, grandson of the company's founder, is adorable in the role of the midshipmite. This third-generation performer does his family proud not only by genrally following in their theatrical traditions, but as the fourth member of his family to take on the role. You won't want to miss this delightfully diverting voyage!
