When it comes to diversity in theater Indigenous Americans often get short shrift. It is hard to think of even one musical that focuses on them. Distant Thunder is a tiny first step toward rectifying this. It is the story of a man who is stolen away from the Black Feet tribe as a child only to return as an adult to complete a land deal that unbeknownst to him may have unintended and unacceptable consequences.
Every character in this show is a member of the Black Feet tribe. Most, if not all, of the actors have Native American ancestry as well. The show features Native American singing, dancing, and customs too. It is not just for effect either. It is all in support of an extremely satisfying, compelling, and heartwarming story.
The show also has a great score. In addition to Native American music, there is a mix of pop and rock. All of it is just beautiful. It fills you with joy, touches your heart, or both. In fact, the same can be said of the entire show. It's just a deeply affecting story that reminds us both how much we can learn and how much we are enriched by encouraging new and diverse voices to participate in theater.
