I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Cancellations, meme schemes, and political and erotically flip flops abound as three actors playing nine parts play out this chaotic live-streamed descent into the high-energy, quick-change, low-brow shitpit of the internet.

Exception to the Rule

How do you make it through detention? In the worst high school in the city, six Black students are stuck in Room 111. They flirt. They fight. They tease. Should they follow the rules and stay put, or find an escape? Are the walls keeping them in, or are stronger forces at play? Dave Harris’s new work crackles with humor and suspense—confronting the tactics for surviving institutions that were not built for you.

Featuring Mezzo-Soprano Guadalupe Peraza
and a Chamber Ensemble of Orchestra Members and Guest Artists
The American Classical Orchestra (ACO) returns to the historic Harlem Parish, the stunning location of its highly-praised 2020 digital production of The Chaconne Project, for an intimate, creatively staged live performance of the program. The Wednesday, June 22 concert, led by ACO Founder and Artistic Director Thomas Crawford, features renowned Mexican mezzo-soprano Guadalupe Peraza in a lively program of Baroque repertoire featuring the chaconne, a musical genre that began as bawdy 16th-century dances in Spanish culture. The chamber concert was initially scheduled for February 3, but postponed due to the Omicron variant.
Revisit: The Chaconne Project
Karen Dekker and Chloe Fedor, Baroque violin
Maureen Murchie, viola

The title of this salon concert—Revisit—refers to the ACO’s much-praised fall 2020 digital release of The Chaconne Projectfilmed at one of the City's prime examples of Neo-Gothic architecture, the Harlem Parish. With Revisit, the original cast of musicians reassembles in the same gorgeous setting and performs the program live. This vibrant concert offers ten examples of the chaconne—a musical genre characterized by its repeating bass line—and sheds light on its evolution as it passed from street to salon to concert hall. Thomas Crawford leads the chamber ensemble comprised of strings and plucked instruments, with voice and percussion. It showcases Mexican mezzo-soprano Guadalupe Peraza, who appeared as featured soloist with the New York Virtuoso Singers and at the majestic Teatro de la Ciudad Esperanza Iris in Mexico City.

Das Sofortvergnügen (THE INSTANT PLEASURE) is a dance-theatre-spectacle about insatiable desires, [in]convenience, and patience. The show is an assemblage of bits, gags, dance routines, revelations, and shared secrets to tickle and provoke audiences. This in-process showing is in anticipation of a full production in early 2023.

Das Sofortvergnügen has been developed at The Brick Theater through the ?!: New Works Festival, livestreamed with Zanni Productions thanks to a City Arts Corp Grant, and additional material was performed at the March 2022 SALON.

PERMISSION

By Emily Aviles (she/her)

June 19 at 9:30 PM in the 56 seat theater

Permission is a museum tour of the artifacts from one woman’s queer history. From awkward middle school crushes to moments of questioning and discrimination, this piece explores the empowering nature of queerness. Most fundamentally, queerness can give us permission to change and be who we are, when we are, at every given moment.

Dive into a flow of music, movement and storytelling with dance theater artist Hannah Louise Barnard & violinist Allison Dubinski, as they seek to alchemize their experiences as queer women through the power of humor, beauty, ritual, and lots of fun outfits.

high functioning x.0: a T4T experiment

Created, directed, choreographed, and performed by x (they/themme; ze/hir; fae/faer)

June 19 at 9:30 PM in the 98 seat theater

high functioning x.0 is a cacophony of x’s dreams, nightmares, and memories. Recalling 1999 thru 2021, x dives into their subconscious thoughts, breaking the ~4th wall~ and inviting their audience into their reality and truths. This pseudo-memoir taps into history, ancestry, factoids, and falsehoods with discordant soundscapes, fervent dancing, and stand-up dramedy. x is uniquely complex, and simultaneously, just like you and me.

POSSESSION

One peculiar September evening, Stevie Sackler—an awkward, nervous girl who swears she doesn’t make the lights flicker whenever she enters a room (even though she totally does)—joins the Jewish Student Association of Carolina Southern College’s weekly meetings. And, to put it lightly, everything quickly goes to shit.

2x2x2: A NIGHT OF DUETS

Created and performed by Cameron Barnett, Fiona Schlegel, Noa Rui-Piin Weiss, Miranda Brown, Aika Takeshima and Sara Pizzi

June 22 at 9:30 PM and June 24 at 7:00pm in the 56 seat theater

“You don’t have to love me, just accept me” is a duet created by Aika Takeshima and Sara Pizzi, based on our reflection about the movements BLM & Stop Asian Hate, and after the daily events of resistance and discrimination of the LGBTQA+ community. We acknowledge we cannot agree with everything or everyone, but we have to respect each other’s existence or boundaries. We cannot hurt people: hurting someone is meaningless. Accepting everyone’s existence is called “coexisting”. This piece is made to express the message: “We are totally different, and this is our power and best quality, acceptance for diversity and exploring the unknown is what makes progress and beauty”.

“Up and Down in Flames” is a dance-theater duet about the volatility of viral fame. A mythical everygirl rises to cyber stardom before falling quietly into obscurity. Fiona Schlegel and Cameron Barnett use dance and spoken text to tell a campfire legend in which anyone can be the main character and participation is encouraged.

Billy is forced to confront his feelings around his own personal sexual desire and societal views on sex and sexuality when a stranger on the internet asks him to participate in a slutty wrestling match. “Billy Gets a Bloody Nose” is a new play by Nathaniel Foster that explores the way in which societal norms and repressed trauma can impact the way we explore our own sexuality.

TRUTH, DARE, OR LESBIAN

Created and performed by Emily Drossell (she/her)

June 23 at 9:30 PM & June 25 at 9:30 PM in the 56 seat theater

At a sleepover in the early 2000s, a girl proposed we play "truth, dare, or lesbian." We all agreed...and then no one chose "lesbian." I left the next morning having missed out on not only my first queer experience, but the chance to actually play the game (and figure out what in the world the "lesbian" option entails). But all that is about to change! In this new musical comedy cabaret I, Emily Drossell, am going to present my truths, perform some dares, and delight in the many interpretations of the lesbian option as I respond in song to prompts given by you, the audience!

SOUNDING SPACES

By Barry Sharp

June 25 at 7:00 PM & June 26 at 9:30 PM in the 56 seat theater

Sounding Spaces is an improvised solo show by composer and musician Barry Sharp. Sharp performs with acoustic instruments such as his voice or violin and integrates industrial ambiences recorded in airports, bathrooms, building vents, power generators, trains, beer coolers, and more. Recorded and remade into “drones,” each sound has its own resonant flavor and reflects both Sharp’s enthusiasm for discovering sounds in the urban landscape and—as anyone close to him would know—his tendency to sing with them. These sounds follow anyone living in a city on a daily basis and through this performance are transformed into something alive, cathartic, and even psychedelic.

17) Psycho Clan Presents…
The Most Epic Story Ever Told
A Story of Redemption and Pathos, Hope and Fear, Love and Hate

THE RISE AND FALL, THEN BRIEF AND MODEST RISE FOLLOWED BY A RELATIVE FALL OF… JEAN CLAUDE VAN DAMME
As Gleaned by a Single Reading of His Wikipedia Page Months Earlier

A New Fightsical by Timothy Haskell
Opening at the Pit Loft June 24th

Notable agents of chaos, Psycho Clan, today announced that it will present the ridiculous story of an 80’s/90’s action hero in Timothy Haskell’s The Rise and Fall, Then Brief and Modest Rise Followed By A Relative Fall Of… Jean Claude Van Damme As Gleaned by a Single Reading of His Wikipedia Page Months Earlier (can be shortened to The Rise and Fall Of Jean Claude Van Damme).  The production will run June 24th through July 17th (Fridays -Sundays at 7:30 PM) at The Pit Loft located at 154 West 29th Street between 7th and 8th Avenue. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online.

The Rise and Fall of Jean Claude Van Damme is told largely through puppets that beat the crap out of each other. Stylistically inspired by the writing of Kurt Vonnegut, especially Breakfast of Champions, this production is about the life and times of 80’s/90’s action icon Jean Claude Van Damme, the Muscles from Brussels, but can easily be about Steven Segal or Dolf Lundgren or Wesley Snipes or… It’s a redemption tale, or a cautionary tale, or a comedy of manners, or hard-hitting melodrama, and mostly absurd.

18)Rodrigo Teaser’s Michael Lives Forever: A Tribute To Michael Jackson Makes U.S. Debut

*June 25th in New York, NY * June 30th in Orlando, FL*
* July 2nd in Los Angeles, CA*

Famed Michael Jackson impersonator
Rodrigo Teaser brings his one of a kind Michael Jackson tribute show,
Michael Lives Foreverto the U.S. for its first time this summer.  This string of US tour dates follows the success Michael Lives Forever has had as it has toured around the world in places like South America, Europe and Mexico being seen by over 500,000 fans to date.Rodrigo Teaser takes being a Michael Jackson impersonator very seriously, not only singing his songs and doing his dance moves, but being sure that each costume worn during a performance is meticulously replicated to be exactly what Michael had worn originally. However, Rodrigo doesn’t just stop at dance moves, costumes and songs, he has gone above and beyond bringing on original members of Michael’s creative team to give fans a truly unique and first of its kind chance to experience that could only be replicated by the King of Pop himself. Specifically on these three tour dates Rodrigo will be bringing Michael’s
longtime choreographer Lavelle Smith, Michael’s backup singer Kevin Dorsey, followed by guitarist Jennifer Batten who fans will recognize from years of playing with Michael at events like the Superbowl and more!

Having performed with Michael for years, it is a huge stamp of credibility that Michael’s  longtime collaborators have chosen to hit the road with
Rodrigo on the Michael Lives Forever Tour.

This tour will bring Michael Lives Forever to the US for its first time ever after having performed to sold out audiences around the globe. Not only is this the first time Michael Lives Forever will be performed in the U.S., but it will also be the first time that Lavelle Smith, Kevin Dorsey, and Jennifer Batten have
performed together since Michael’s passing in 2009. When asked about coming together with Jennifer and Lavelle, Kevin Dorsey said, “We’ve circled the globe together making history. I can’t think of another two that I would rather have my last dance with!” Fittingly this special reunion and tour kicks off in New York City on June 25th on the 13 year anniversary of Michael’s passing.

19) Samantha Shay’s Mother Melancholia

with Barbara KaufmannChalia La Tour, and Breanna O’Mara,

and inspired by music from Sóley

co-commissioned by Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch

Available for Online Viewing Worldwide from June 24-July 1, 2022

Dutch Premiere at Cinedans FEST
Eye Filmmuseum, Amsterdam
June 25, 2022

From June 24-July 1, 2022, Samantha Shay’s short film Mother Melancholia will be available to screen online worldwide. Tickets are €30 for access to the online festival and are now available online at https://cinedans.filmchief.com/hub.

The film will have its Dutch premiere at the 18th edition of Cinedans FEST at Eye Filmmuseum, Amsterdam on June 25, 2022 at 10:30pm. Tickets are €11.50 standard admission, €10 for students, and €7.50 for children. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit cinedans.nl/cinedans-fest-22.

Mother Melancholia is a multi-layered portrait of four women and a eulogy for the planet set to, and inspired by, Icelandic instrumentalist Sóley's album of the same title. A self-proclaimed soundtrack for the end of the world as we know it, the dance film approaches patriarchal politics and ecofeminism through an unguarded, unsettlingly beautiful meditation on the difficulty, and immediacy, of being fully present in the world. Filmed in the surreal and eroding Icelandic landscape, Mother Melancholia is a quiet, yet urgent, conduit between the internal world of the human experience and the planet we inhabit.

Mother Melancholia was created by Samantha Shay in collaboration with the other performers: longtime Pina Bausch collaborator and dancer Barbara Kaufmann, Slave Play’s Tony Award-nominated Chalia La Tour, and Breanna O’Mara, former Tantzheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch dancer currently working with Dmitris Papaiouannou.
