Each April 19th, the Congress for Jewish Culture, along with Friends of the Bund, Jewish Labor Committee and Workers Circle, has organized a gathering of musicians, academics, and survivors and their families at the stone in the Warsaw Ghetto Memorial Plaza in Riverside Park. This annual event marked the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, the single greatest instance of Jewish armed resistance to the Holocaust, with an academy remembering the victims and fighters of history's greatest crime. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they did not gather there for the first time in living memory, but instead held their event online. Of course, they hope and pray that next year they will all once again be able to convene at Der Shteyn (the stone) in Riverside Park.
This year, they will host the April 19th event on the Congress for Jewish Culture YouTube channel and through www.congressforjewishculture.

Centenary Stage Company announces 2021 Summer season featuring a full line up of Musical Theatre productions, concerts, and the return of the popular Front Porch Series hosting a selection of outdoor cabarets and family friendly Young Audience Series offerings. The 2021 Summer season launches with Forever Plaid July 8 – 18 in the Sitnik Theatre of the Lackland Performing Arts Center. Once upon a time, there were four guys (Sparky, Smudge, Jinx and Frankie) who discovered that they shared a love for music and then got together to become their idols - The Four Freshman, The Hi-Lo's and The Crew Cuts. Rehearsing in the basement of Smudge's family's plumbing supply company, they became "Forever Plaid". On the way to their first big gig, the "Plaids" are broadsided by a school bus and killed instantly. It is at the moment when their careers and lives end that the story of Forever Plaid begins. Singing in close harmony, squabbling boyishly over the smallest intonations and executing their charmingly outlandish choreography with overzealous precision, the "Plaids" are a guaranteed smash, with a program of beloved songs and delightful patter that keeps audiences rolling in the aisles when they're not humming along to some of the great nostalgic pop hits of the 1950s. Specific performance times are: Thursdays July, 8 & 15 at 7:30PM; Fridays, July 9 & 16 at 8:00 PM; Saturdays July 10 & 17 at 8:00 PM; and Sundays, July 11 & 18 at 2:00 PM. The summer season continues with the musical production of Always… Patsy Cline July 29 – August 8 in the Sitnik Theatre of the Lackland Performing Arts Center. One of the most produced musicals in America according to American Theatre Magazine, Always... Patsy Cline is more than a tribute to the legendary country singer who died tragically at age 30 in a plane crash in 1963. The show is based on a true story about Cline's friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in 1961, and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death. The musical, complete with down home country humor, true emotion, and even some audience participation, includes many of Patsy's unforgettable hits such as Crazy, I Fall to Pieces, Sweet Dreams and Walking After Midnight... 27 songs in all. The show's title was inspired by Cline's letters to Seger, which were consistently signed "Love ALWAYS... Patsy Cline." Always…Patsy Cline runs in the Sitnik from July 29 – August 8. On Wednesday, July 14 at 10:00 AM Centenary Stage Company’s Young Audience Series will present Schoolhouse Rock Live Jr. On Wednesday, July 21 at 7:00 PM, Centenary Stage Company’s Front Porch Series will host the first of it’s Twilight Cabarets featuring a themed selection of musical theatre songs performed by Centenary University students, alumni and CSC veterans. Then, on Wednesday August, 4 at 10:00 am Centenary Stage Company’s Young Audience Series returns with Polkadots: The Cool Kids Musical. Finally, Wednesday August 11 at 7:00 PM the Front Porch Series will host a second installment of the Twilight Cabaret. More than just the Beatles, this nostalgic musical tribute spans the entire 60s British Invasion era with music from BOTH sides of the Atlantic, and is three acts in one: The first act includes songs by iconic British groups such as The Zombies, Dave Clark Five, The Rolling Stones, The Hollies, Herman's Hermits, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Manfred Mann and many others. The Institute’s aim is to bring together dancers, choreographers and directors around the world to experience the master teachers of color whose practices are embedded in the community and are focused on advancing the art of dance that transform the personal, environmental and metaphysical spaces. As a virtual dance institute, The Bridge will invite world renowned as well as up and coming dancers and choreographer to come to guest teach the class. Butoh: Cradling Empty Space will appeal to dance students, teachers, performance art scholars, movers, and anyone interested in choreography, theater, and Japanese history, culture and art.
The book includes rare photographs, helpful graphics, a detailed bibliography and footnotes, and resources for additional information.
The virtual four-day butoh workshop series led by Vangeline, based on the critically acclaimed book, will mix theory and practice. Each module will include a brief lecture/demonstration, warm up, and practical exercise leading to creative improvisation for participating students. Vangeline will take questions from students at the end of each session. The classes will be taught over Zoom. Each session is $30 and the entire series is $120. Beginners are welcome.

Reading the book prior to or during the workshop is recommended, but students who haven’t read the book are welcome to participate. All students, beginners included, will learn simple techniques that are easily accessible and deepen their understanding of butoh. Enrolled students will receive an email with more detailed information after they sign up, with recommended reading.
In this workshop, students will explore:
- techniques of stop-signal and motor imagery
- reactive vs. voluntary movements in choreographed and improvised butoh
- vision and visualization
- coactivation of sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system in butoh
The Vangeline Theater’s butoh classes are trauma-informed; however, it is recommended that prior to taking any class, prospective students familiarize themselves with the studio policy, particularly students with a history of PTSD or students with any mental health condition. Pan Asian Repertory Theatre (Tisa Chang, Founding Artistic Director), continuing their educational initiative to serve elementary grade students and families with children, presents the family-friendly virtual return engagement of the acclaimed 2018 production of The Emperor’s Nightingale by Damon Chua. The Emperor's Nightingale is produced by special arrangement with Plays for New Audiences.

The Emperor’s Nightingale by Damon Chua, directed by Chongren Fan, is a family-friendly Zoom adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s story “The Nightingale,” set in 18th century China, and brings to light the youthful exploits of the future Emperor Qianlong. This 45-minute virtual version employs traditional puppetry, folk songs and new illustrations teaching the art of Chinese calligraphy. Nominated by the Off-Broadway Alliance for “Best Family Show”, this TYA production emphasizes the importance of leadership guided by a moral compass, through the story about two rival teen brothers competing for the throne.

South Street Seaport Museum presents Beyond Titanic: Travel and Immigration in the Era of Ocean Liners on Thursday, April 15, 2021 at 6pm ET. Join the Seaport Museum and special guests for a digital conversation about the crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by immigrants and millionaires prior to, during, and after the "Era of Titanic." Author, travel writer and lecturer Theodore W. Scull will explore the beginnings of transatlantic travel in the 19th century, starting with the 1810-1820s Black Ball Line packet ships sailing out of of South Street and Peck Slip, and the development of steamship, starting with SS Great Western, the first ship built for regular services between Great Britain and New York, with her maiden voyage in 1839.
Historian and educator William Roka will introduce the great liners of the 1900s-1920s, the contexts in which RMS Titanic was built, and the legacies tied to her fatal accident. Titanic was built in a world of competing global powers, rapid technological change, and great economic inequality. When she sank she was the largest ship in the world, but had she lived Titanic would have lost that title only a few weeks after her maiden voyage.
This digital conversation will be held on Titanic Remembrance Day on April 15, 2021 and will be illustrated by materials from Seaport Museum's collection and archives, including but not limited to paintings, watercolors, drawings, ephemera, and ships models. The program will be moderated by Martina Caruso, Director of Collections at the South Street Seaport Museum.

South Street Seaport Museum’s 19th-century printing office Bowne & Co. announces participation in the eighth annual 36 Days of Type project on Instagram at @bowneprinters from April 5 - May 10, 2021. 36 Days of Type is about celebrating the breadth of approaches to designing letters, and Bowne & Co. hopes their contribution extends that conversation with historical examples.
An annual international initiative, 36 Days of Type invites designers, illustrators and graphic artists to express their interpretation of Latin alphabet letters and numbers on Instagram over 36 consecutive days. This year, The South Street Seaport Museum’s 19th-century printing office Bowne & Co. will partake in the event not by posting newly designed letterforms, but by posting scans of printed letterforms and close-up photography of the type artifacts themselves, so as to celebrate the history of decorative and expressive letterforms from the 19th and early 20th centuries. These letterforms come from wood printing type that is part of the working collection at the museum.

Theater Resources Unlimited (TRU) presents a Writer-Producer Virtual Speed Date: The Art of the Pitch, on Sunday, April 25, 2021. The popular event is now reformatted for Zoom, with more tech and less noise: each writer will be in an individual breakout room with each of the eleven producers. You meet a producer at a party and have two minutes to interest them in your work. Do you have the skill to sell yourself? Here’s a chance to practice your pitching with real producers who are open to and interested in meeting you. Okay, they probably won’t option you on the spot, but they’ll give you valuable feedback about your work and your ability to talk about it. And you’ll have the opportunity to start developing a relationship. And that’s what this business is all about. Relationships.
There will be eleven producers lined up, from both the commercial and not-for-profit worlds, all with an interest in new projects; we also may have eleven aspiring producers from our Producer Development program. So you’ll be pitching to as many as 22 producers in total! Come with a willingness to learn, because the real value is the chance to practice your pitching. And you’ll be getting invaluable coaching from experts, as well.

Forged during and in response to a fraught moment in history, the unprecedented collaboration between Williamstown Theatre Festival and Audible Theater preserves the Festival season in a different format, provides continued work for the artists involved in the Festival season, and produces a body of work that will be made available for global Audible listeners to enjoy and experience. The $50,000 gift is from a longtime supporter of The York who wants to encourage patrons to continue the generous support of The York following a water main break that devastated its longtime home at Saint Peter’s Church on January 4. The All-Star, All-Singing, All-Talking, All-Virtual special benefit presentation of the Off-Broadway hit THE MUSICAL OF MUSICALS (THE MUSICAL!)…AND MORE! is presented in association with Tom D’Angora, Michael D’Angora, and Tim Guinee, who have generously volunteered their services and have stepped in to help raise funds to rebuild The York. The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!), which The York helped develop and create, received its Off-Broadway premiere there in 2003, where it enjoyed an extended run. Melanie Herman and The York transferred it to New World Stages in 2005 for a 500-performance commercial run. The original cast album is on JAY Records.
