A show with a name like Birthday, Birthday, Birthday sounds like a lighthearted comedy. Knowing that the show is about a pair of friends who share a birthday and enjoy celebrating their shared birthday together only adds to this feeling. However, the show Birthday, Birthday Birthday is not what you would expect from the name and description. There are moments of humor. However, the show is mostly kind of dark and dystopian, although the latter is not revealed until late in the show. It is also a very confusing show because it's unclear if all of the action is supposed to take place in the distant future, and they are merely reliving or remembering what occurred in the past or if only the latter part of the show is supposed to take place during that time.
While the show does revolve around a group of friends celebrating a joint birthday at various intervals in their lives, this is not a group of friends one should aspire to be a part of. There is more hostility in this group than any sense of genuine warmth or caring. Thus, not only does it make one wonder how they stayed friends so long, but it also makes it hard for the audience to care about any of them at all.
