All Nighter is a show about a group of girls hunkered down in their college library for one last cramming session before graduation. Anyone who has attended college will likely feel nostalgic as they enter the theater space and view the set. It isn't so much that it invokes a library because it doesn't really do that, but more of a sense of academia. Something about that large round table surrounded by wall-to-wall glass and those big glass doors really establishes a feeling of a particular place and pulls the audience into the location and the story.
The cast includes Kathryn Gallagher and Julia Lester, known for their roles in Jagged Little Pill and Into the Woods on Broadway, respectively. They are joined by Kristine Froseth, Havana Rose Liu, and Alyah Chanelle Scott. Although all the performances are good, Lester, as the offbeat larger-than-life, Wilma, and Froseth, as the uptight people pleaser hiding a big secret, Darcie, particularly stand out. All five play off each other nicely, however.
The story is a fast-moving whirlwind. As alliances shift and revelations pile up, it's all head-spinning in a fun way. Just when you think things couldn't get more shocking, they do. Those who prefer a show with a definite sense of closure may not enjoy the ending of this one. It will leave you with unanswered questions and a hunger to know more. It will also make you long for those college days (or wish you could go to college) while also making you relieved that those days are over (or that you never went to college).
