The circus is once again coming to town: ABCirque returns to Brooklyn Children’s Museum on Saturday, October 5 for a day of interactive circus performances and hands-on stations.
ABCirque (formerly The Muse) is a contemporary circus company that specializes in immersing the audience into the narrative of each performance. These non-traditional circus shows keep the audience on their toes while breaking the fourth wall with a diverse, dynamic cast that provides top-notch entertainment for both independently produced shows and external booking.
ABCirque will present main performances on the Museum’s rooftop. Following each performance, attendees can experience interactive circus stations in the second floor of the Museum.
The Museum is open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday, October 5, and main performances take place from 11:30 am to 12:10 pm, and from 2:30 pm to 3:10 pm, followed by 20 minutes of interactive circus stations around the second floor of the Museum. Feast of St. Francis Day Service and Blessing of the Animals in NYC
On Sunday, October 6, from 10:30 am to 2 pm, the largest Gothic Cathedral in the world welcomes all animals and people to celebrate the decades-old tradition featuring the Procession of the Animals and followed by the Blessing of the Animals and St. Francis Day Fair.
WHAT: The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine will celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of the environment and ecology, with its annual event on Sunday, October 6, 2024. The event will begin with a worship service at 10:30 am, featuring the Procession of the Animals, music by Artist in Residence Paul Winter, and dance by Forces of Nature.
Immediately following the service, the afternoon fair will be held, rain or shine, where clergy will bless a variety of animals, from cats, dogs, birds, and other animals. The fair will also feature pet portrait photography, information tables on environmental initiatives and more fun activities. In addition, the ASPCA will be on the Cathedral grounds with an adoption van from 12 pm to 2 pm, offering attendees the opportunity to meet and adopt pets in need of loving homes.
The service will also be livestreamed for those wishing to join from home. The video will be available on the Cathedral's YouTube channel.

Autobiography is dance in the ballet lineage merged with choreographer Wayne McGregor's genetic code and AI. The work consists of 23 sections of movement material that reflect the 23 pairs of chromosomes of the human genome. The sections are then fed into an algorithm based on McGregor's DNA data, which randomly selects sections to create a new version of the work each time it's presented. Through the layering of choreographic imprints over personal data, McGregor has upended the traditional nature of dance-making to create a convergence of creative authorship. Autobiography is performed by a cast of 9 dancers and set to an original score by Jlin.

In honor of its 140th Anniversary, Playbill, the leading theatre resource and memento since 1884, will be printing and distributing special Playbill Legacy Covers – only available to theatre patrons. Throughout the month of October, every Broadway will be distributing four special versions of its Playbill, each boasting a different Legacy Cover. These Legacy Covers commemorate different eras of Playbill and Broadway—from black and white to modern day. In total, 148 different covers have been designed and will be distributed to patrons throughout October, with each audience member receiving one complimentary Playbill, as always.

South Street Seaport Museum’s monthly Sea Chanteys and Maritime Music program continues aboard the 1885 tall ship Wavertree, Pier 16 (Fulton and South Streets). October is the last month of 2024 that the lively chantey experience will take place outdoors on the main deck of the historic cargo vessel before moving indoors. Starting in November, as the weather cools, this monthly event will transition to a hybrid format, allowing you to enjoy it both in-person at the Museum and online.

Join the monthly sea-song sing along, hosted by a local artist who will lead the group through a variety of traditional maritime work songs and ballads. Throughout the event, attendees of all skill levels are welcome to take the stage for this round-robin where you can sing and share the chantey of your choice. Attendees are encouraged to sing along with the chorus or just sit back and enjoy each performance.
Singers of all levels, as well as listeners, are welcome to participate in this free event. You can lead or request a song during the round-robin or simply listen.
Advanced in-person registration is encouraged, but walkups will be accommodated as possible. Any in-person attendee is welcome to lead a song during the round-robin; if you have a specific song in mind, please inform us of the song title when you register. This event takes place rain or shine. In the event of rain, the event will be moved from the main deck to an indoor place on the ship.
Please note that access to Wavertree for this event involves climbing a few stairs, walking up an angled gangway, and descending a few stairs onto the deck. The lower decks are accessible via stairs, while the upper deck requires navigating steep ladder-like stairs.

October 2024: Sailors Scrimshaw
Join the Seaport Museum every weekend in October for an all-ages scrimshaw-inspired activity! Carving and engraving on ivory and bone has been an art form among many cultures throughout the world and throughout history. Scrimshaw in its maritime context was a type of carving on marine mammal ivory, made by sailors on board whaling ships.
Come to the Museum’s 207 Water Street program space––or aboard the tall ship Wavertree if the weather is nice––for an update on this mid-late 19th century shipboard pastime. Using recycled plastic in place of ivory and push pins instead of carving knives, learn this artistic etching technique and take home your very own hand-made scrimshaw items.
This activity is open to all ages, though children under 5 may find etching challenging. For those who prefer not to etch, we’ll provide crayons and a whale tooth printout so everyone can still join in the fun without using sharp objects. Bring the whole family and create something special together!

The Roxborough Development Corporation is proudly bringing the community together for a celebration of fall fun at the 12th Annual Roxtoberfest on Saturday, October 5 from 12:00pm to 6:00pm. The street festival will take place on Ridge Avenue between Lyceum Avenue and Leverington Avenue, with sidewalk activations extending from Leverington Avenue to Hermitage Street, connecting Roxtoberfest to the family fun at Gorgas Park. Don your best pair of lederhosen, sip on New Ridge Brewing Co. beer, and join us for one of the neighborhood’s most cherished fall traditions. Look for traditional feel of a German beer fest including performances by an Oktoberfest band, the dazzling spectacle of circus performers, spirited competitions, an enticing array of food trucks, plenty of beverages fit for a fall fest, and fun activities to delight our youngest attendees. While festively walking along Ridge Avenue from Lyceum to Leverington Avenue you’ll enjoy shopping over 60 unique crafters and get to know local community organizations.
Also new this year is the Scarecrow Walk and Scarecrow Build with Gorgas Park. This year the Friends of Gorgas Park are bringing back their scarecrow making event! The RDC and Friends of Gorgas Park are partnering to connect the two events with sidewalk activations including a scarecrow walk with voting for best scarecrow!

Celebrate National Coming Out Day at Manayunk’s Annual Out & About Festival on Saturday, October 5 from 11a.m.- 4p.m. Local vendors, artists, and organizations will take the street as the day hosts performances, drag story time, shows, and entertainment with groups like Philly Drag Mafia and TNP Productions. Out & About collaborations include performance groups such as Philly Drag Mafia and TNP Productions. Philly Drag Mafia has been a part of the event since its beginning in 2019. They have won Philly Magazine’s Best of Philly for two years in a row: 2022 for Best Drag Shows and 2023 for Best Drag Brunch. This year, Philly Drag Mafia teamed up with Visit Philadelphia and Philadelphia Gay News to break the Guinness World Record for most attended drag story time reading set, and Manayunk is more than happy to have them host a drag story time during Out & About. Other local artists and organizations who will participate in Saturday’s happenings include J.Proud, Therapy Center of Philadelphia, New + Wesley Images, and more. Overall, the event wouldn't happen without Manayunk’s supportive businesses and merchants, many of which are hosting shows, brunches, and game nights throughout the weekend.

The event will take place at Yards in parts of the actual brewing facility and outdoors near their loading dock. The taproom will be open for regular business.

Italian festivals have been held at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church for over 100 years. The parish was established in 1912 by Italian immigrants who wished to maintain a connection to their homeland, and their great spirit of faith, family and tradition has been maintained throughout the decades. The current-day festival began in 1987 on the occasion of the parish’s 75th Anniversary and has been thriving ever since. The event takes place annually on the first Sunday of October and is held on the 1700 Block of South 9th Street. It is no charge and open to the public.
Rev. Nick Martorano, pastor of the church, has strived to make it a very special celebration for South Philadelphia. He said “we wanted to create an opportunity for our entire community, not just our parishioners, to come together and celebrate one of the many diverse cultures that make our neighborhood so great.” Because of the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the day, this festival has indeed come to hold a special place in the hearts of all the local people and out of town visitors as well.
Keeping with the authentic nature of this occasion, the day begins with a procession at 12:00 Noon honoring some of the iconic saints of the Catholic church who are admired by the faithful and viewed as shining role models. The statues are carried through the street accompanied by the renowned Verdi Band playing traditional Italian marches.
Following the procession, the festival gets underway with its now famous variety of ethnic food delicacies, fine musical entertainment, rides and games for kids, and more.
Food choices will include authentic Italian delicacies such as Arancini, Broccoli Rabe, Eggplant Rollatta, Escarole and Beans, Meatball Sandwiches, Porchetta Sandwiches, Pizza, Sausage and Peppers, Italian Seafood and Rice, Tripe, a Pasta Station, Italian Cakes and Desserts. Plus Chicken Fingers, Roast Beef Sandwiches, Wine, Beer and Cordials.
