Mom's view: A new musical version of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is currently available for streaming from Streaming Musicals. This version of the story has a pop tinged score with some lovely and engaging songs including A Man of My Acquaintance and others songs that are less memorable. The latter may be partially due to the fact that Justin Mortellitit in the role of Mr. Darcy has a bit of a weak singing voice and seems to be straining a lot. His acting is fine though and he has good chemistry with Mary Mattison in the role of Elizabeth Bennett. Ms. Mattison has a sweet pretty voice and she imbues Elizabeth with a warmth behind her stubborn exterior that is rarely seen in most theatrical and/or cinematic productions of the novel. Over all, the show is a fairly pleasant diversion which is something we all need especially now.
The show made its World Premiere December 4, 2019 through January 4, 2020 at Theatreworks Silcon Valley. It was adapted by Paul Gordon who wrote the book, music and lyrics. Mr. Gordon is known for writing the score of the musical Jane Eyre which ran on Broadway in 2001 and was nominated for several Tony awards including Best Score. He also wrote the score of the stage musical adaption of Daddy Long Legs which ran Off Broadway in 2015. His other musicals include another Jane Austen adaption, Emma as well as No Called Ahead both of which are also available from Streaming Musicals.
