What: Georgie: My Adventures With George Rose
Where: The Davenport Theatre
354 W. 45th St.
New York, NY
Who: Strongly recommended for 16 and up only
Mom- George Rose was a character actor who appeared in numerous shows from the 1960's through his death in 1988. Some of his roles included the Major General in Pirates of Penzance, Alfred Dolittle in My Fair Lady and Captain Hook in Peter Pan. Ed Dixon was a young actor when he met George Rose, They struck up a friendship. This one man show starring Dixon is his homage to that friendship or at least it starts out that way. However, somewhere along the way the story takes a very dark turn. Dixon is a good storyteller. He holds the audience's attention well for the course of the approximately 90 minute no intermission play. A lot of his stories are funny as are his impressions of George Rose. However, there was a very dark side to George Rose and that is examined in this play as well. If you only like plays that are happy and cheerful and leave you feeling good, I would not recommend this one, If you want to see a one man tour de force than by all means go. However, and I cannot stress this strongly enough leave your children at home. This is definitely not a show for children. Mom - God of Carnage is a dark comedy. It is about two sets of parents that get together to discuss a violent playground incident which occurred between their two sons. This is another show that is not good for anyone looking for just a little light uplifting entertainment. It is certainly not that. Although, the show does have its funny moments, it is more dark than funny. There is nobody to root for in the show because not one of the four characters in the show is likable. The acting is good in this version of the show, and all four actors do a good job with their characters. However, that doesn't make the characters any more likable or easier to root for. I definitely wouldn't recommend this show for children because of strong language and subject matter. It is not a show they would enjoy anyway. If you are an adult, and you like your comedy with an edge, you probably might enjoy this show. If not, you probably would not like it.
