Math: Plus a Chance to Win a Fun Math Book!

Happy Pi Day! In honor of Pi Day we present this post on math.

Me- I hate math. I despise math. Even though, I hate math I am good at it. Because of that. I have to be in math enrichment and do extra math.  I just started math enrichment. It has been fun because we haven't done any math yet. So far we learned about economics because we are going to make our own products. We are going to have to do the math for things like gains and losses and profits. We got a card with a picture on it. The picture is a buyer. It told us a little about them and their background. We had choices of products we could make for our character. My character was a fairy. I picked to make clothes for her. I am going to make her shoes. Everything is fun about it except I am not looking forward to the math. The only time I like math is when I'm counting my money.  Over all, math is annoying.*

Mom - Math is a necessary evil. Both of my kids hate it. It was never my favorite subject either although my Mom was a mathematician when she was in school. However, I understand something that my kids have yet to grasp. Although there are things that you will do in math class that you will never do again in your life, this is especially true as you get older, there are a lot of things that you learn in math that you will use again. Even if you are not in the business world, there are so many math concepts that you do use in daily life. Sometimes, in life just like in school, math is not fun, but sometimes math can be fun. Below are some ways to make math fun for you and your child:

1) Cook something together and use math to measure ingredients.

2) Play a sport. Sports are full of math. Keeping stats,  sizing equipment, and time divisions of a sporting event are just a few of the ways sports involve math.

3) If you live in or visit the New York area, go to the National Museum of Mathematics. This museum full of fun ways to use math is the only one of its kind. 4) Visit a fun math web-site, such as, Cy Tymony's web-site www.PiDayFun.com. The site presents free tips on how to make math fun using discarded items without needing any special tools. You can also download a free Pi card.

3) Get a fun math book.  One we would recommend is Sneaky Math: a graphic primer with projects by Cy Tymony.  This is a book that explains math concepts but it also gives you fun projects you can do to help you learn math concepts. For example: you can build a sneaky fraction quizzer or learn how to  determine objects height using shadows.  This book also provides lists of recommended math books and web-sites, a glossary of math symbols, and a list of modern math notables among other things.
