Funtivity Friday - Science Experiment - Can You Make Ice in A Bag?

Aurella was wondering if you could make ice in a plastic bag so we decided to do an experiment. We got a plastic bag, and we filled it with water. Then, we stuck it in the freezer over night.

This was our result:

So, the answer is yes - you can make ice in a bag!

Funtivity Friday - Science Experiment: Can We Build a Boat Out of Paper and/or Similar Materials That Will Float?

We wanted to see if we could make a boat out of household items like  paper and/or other similar materials that would actually float.

What we did:

1) First we made a list of potential materials to try

2) Then we made our boats out of:

1) Paper

2) Cardboard

3) Saran

4) Pipe cleaners and string

5) Tin Foil

Our results:

All of our boats sank. Maybe next time we'll try making a boat out of more than one material.

Here is a fun experiment we did to see if you can color snow. Try it on your own or try some methods we didn't try.

What We Used:

Blendy Pen
Crayola Color Wonder Marker
Crayola Marker
Crayola Window Marker
Dry Erase Marker
Sharpie
Acrylic Paint
Watercolor Paint
Glitter

What we did:

1) We gathered nine cups of snow, one for each item we wanted to try.

2) We used each item to try to color the snow in one cup.

Funtivity Friday - Science Experiment: What Effect Does Water Have on Melting Snow?

Here is a fun experiment to see how water effects melting snow.

What you will need:

Three Cups
Snow
Hot water
Cold Water

Steps:

1) Fill three cups with snow

2) Pour hot water into one of the cups.

3) Pour cold water into one of the cups.

4) Observe

Funtivity Friday - Science Experiment: The Effects of Salt Water on Food Products

Here is a fun experiment to see how food products react differently in regular water and salt water.

What you will need:

Water 

Salt

Various food products (we used: milk, mayonnaise, mustard, soy sauce, hot sauce)

Cups (two for each food product) 

 

                                               

1) Fill half the cups with plain water

2) Fill half the cups with salt water

3) Pour a little of each food product into each cup.

Funtivity Friday - .Science Experiment: Does It Float?

Here is a fun and easy science experiment that is great for little kids since it is so simple to perform.

What you will need:

A large bowl or container

Common household objects that will be not be ruined when submerged in water

Paper

A writing utensil

1) Fill the bowl with water.

2) On the piece of paper, make a column for objects that float and one for objects that don't float.

2) Select an object.

3) Guess if you think the object will float.

4) Submerge the object in the water.

5) Write it down under the correct column depending on whether it floated or didn't.

6) Repeat for all objects.

If your children are younger, you may not necessarily want to write down what floats and what doesn't but just notice and point it out to your child if they are very young and let them point it out to you if they are slightly older. If your children are older you may want to discuss your results and talk about why some objects may float and some may not.
