The Price, like most of playwright Arthur Miller's works, is a play about family. On the surface, it's about a family moving on and getting rid of all the literal stuff they've been holding onto from their past. However, at its heart, it's about making choices, and the resulting misunderstandings and resentments that can result from the choices we make and ultimately tear a family apart in irreparable ways.
Miller does a very balanced job of presenting each of his characters in this show. His writing makes it easy to feel empathy for each of them. There are no heroes or villains here, but each character has both admirable and not-so-admirable qualities.
However, words on a page are nothing without bringing these characters to life. The excellent cast in this production brilliantly does just that. Their nuanced portrayal of these characters really makes them relatable. You may not agree with all of their choices, but you can understand why they felt they had to do what they did. This show may even make you think of your own family and some of the choices you or your loved ones have made.
