I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Beginning This Week

Dreaming Zenzile
Based on the Life of Miriam Makeba
79 E. 4th St., New York, NY

Previews Begin 5/17
Opening Night 6/1
Through 6/26

At her final concert, South African musical legend and activist Miriam Makeba delivers the performance of her life, raising the conscience and the consciousness of a people. But the ancestors are calling—transporting her through the music and fractured memories of her past on a spiritual journey of reconciliation. Written and performed by Grammy-nominated international music sensation Somi Kakoma, this world premiere musical is an electrifying portrait of a revolutionary artist’s singular voice and vision.

War Stories
The Tank Proscenium Theater
312 W. 36th St., New York, NY

5/20 - 6/12

War Storiesset in World War II New York City, is the story of Ruth, a young musician from a working-class immigrant family who has come to the city in pursuit of her music, her freedom, and her politics. Exploring the world through music, labor action, and relationships, she is committed in her support of the war. Her pro-war views are challenged by Nat, who comes from a wealthy industrial Jewish family and sees all wars as capitalist and corrupt. War Stories embeds their personal struggles within the context of those of workers and conscientious objectors, against a backdrop of antisemitism, racism, and labor action. It is awash in the music of the time period.

6) Battery Dance
Presents
Three World Premieres
2022 New York Season
Hofmann Dances
May 19 & 20, 2022
Schimmel Center

Battery Dance presents the World Premieres of three works of choreography, each inspired by the painting and legacy of Hans Hofmann. The premieres will take place at the Schimmel Center on Thursday, May 19 at 7pm and Friday, May 20 at 2pm* and 7pm. Tickets start at $25 and can be purchased online at hofmann.batterydance.org

For this cross-disciplinary program, Battery Dance invited three choreographers — Saeed Hani, Tsai Hsi Hung, and Christopher Núñez — to respond to the artwork of Hans Hofmann (1880-1966), one of the 20th century's most influential painters and teachers. Each of the choreographers found distinctly different inspiration in Hofmann's oeuvre, including his poetic imagery, groundbreaking painting techniques, and use of brilliant color. Together their three works embody Hofmann's legacy of imagination and abstract expression. To read what the choreographers have to say about their processes, visit hofmann.batterydance.org

Celebrates World Goth Day

Sunday, May 22 at The Marquis Theatre

THE TOWN HALL
(123 W. 43rd Street)

The Town Hall presents Broadway By The Year: From The Ziegfeld Follies To Moulin Rouge on Monday, May 23 at 8pm. Created, written, directed and hosted by Scott Siegel for The Town Hall, the evening will continue Broadway By The Year’s 21st landmark season at The Town Hall (123 W. 43rd Street).

And they have highlighted oftentimes forgotten composers, bringing their names back into the limelight, such as Eubie Blake with Eubie!and Fats Waller with Ain’t Misbehavin’.

Tickets for Broadway By The Year are $57-$67. For tickets and information, please visit www.thetownhall.org or call 800-982-2787. The Broadway By The Year concert series is part of The Town Hall’s presenting season.

The critically acclaimed Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company presents Year of the Water Tiger at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in a family-friendly matinee celebration on Saturday, May 21, 2022. Paying tribute to the incredible dancer, choreographer, and educator Nai-Ni Chen, this marks the Company’s return to NJPAC after Chen’s untimely passing in December 2021. Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company has been a beloved presence at NJPAC since it first opened its doors in 1997.

n addition to vibrant dance commemorating the Year of the Water Tiger, NJPAC will also welcome the innovative classical music group, the Ahn Trio. (Program details are below.)

The afternoon begins with demonstrations and fun activities staged in the lobby before the performance. Year of the Water Tiger celebration combines the elegance of traditional Asian art and the beauty of American modern dance with thrilling choreography, exotic music and dazzling acrobats. Audiences get close to the exciting sights of dancing lions and dragons, the lilting sound of Chinese pipa and erhu, and vibrant gold and red costumes and props.

On stage, the first part of the program starts with one of the most popular dances performed in the Chinese New Year Double Lions Welcome Spring and the most colorful Chinese traditional dances in the repertory, Festival and Dragon Dance. Sandwiched between is one of Na-Ni Chen’s most iconic dances, Raindrops, which takes the audience to the choreographer’s childhood. To express the Company’s hope for the next generation, Company Director Ying Shi brings Green Lotus by eight junior dancers from her academy.

In the second half of the program, the dancers of Nai-Ni Chen pay tribute to the grace and power of Nai-Ni Chen’s work by performing her signature work, Incense. Making its NJPAC debut is the chamber music ensemble, Ahn Trio. Hailed by The Los Angeles Times as “exacting and exciting musicians,” the three sisters (pianist Lucia, violinist Angella, and cellist Maria) have earned a distinguished reputation for embracing 21st century classical music with their unique style and innovative collaborations. The Ahn Trio is a longtime collaborator of Nai-Ni Chen and they will play Ave Maria by Bach; Concrete Stream with music composed by Kenji Bunch, their first collaboration with Nai-Ni Chen, and Skylife, one of their signature works.

The program ends with UNITY, one of Nai-Ni Chen’s final work, completed by PeiJu Chien-Pott, the Company’s current Director of New and Creative Dance who worked with composer Jason Kao Hwang to finalize the powerful work that is Nai-Ni Chen’s urgent call to the world.

Program subject to change

Double Lions Welcome Spring
Choreography: Nai-Ni Chen
Music and Costume: Chinese Folk
Dancers: Sonny Shiu, Candice Jarvis, Evan Stewart, Jainil Mehta, Namhui Kim, Yaozhong Zhang

One of the most popular dances performed in the Chinese New Year Celebration. The Lion Dance is a prayer for peace on earth as a child is able to play with a ferocious beast in harmony.

There are many styles of the Lion Dance in China, this program showcases the Northern style that combines the dancers’ acrobatic skills, coordination and concentration to create a fun and dramatic story. The Lion Dance is said to have originated in the Tang Dynasty over 1,000 years ago when the Emperor held a festival where people dressed in animal costumes.

Raindrops
Choreography: Nai-Ni Chen
Dancers: Rio Kikuchi, Namhui Kim, Candice Jarvis, Hannah Jew
Music: Henry Wolff and Nancy Henning, Robert Rich, Sainkho Namtchylak
Costume: Olu-Orondava

This dance draws inspiration from the choreographer’s childhood memory of the city where she was born, Keelong. The city is also known as the “Rain Harbor” in Taiwan.

Green Lotus
Choreography: Nai-Ni Chen
Dancers: FA Dance Junior Division Dancers (7-9): Lily Wang, Charlotte Gao, Alice Hou, Audrey Ning, Alexandra Hsun, Isabella Bao, Chloe Hao, Sophie Yao
Music: Chinese Traditional Music

Festival/Dragon Parade
Choreography: Nai-Ni Chen
Dancers: Company
Music: Chinese Traditional
Lighting Design: A.C. Hickox
Costume: Hilarie Blumenthal

There are many celebrations in the Chinese tradition. One of the most colorful is the Dragon Boat Festival. In this dance, the blue flag symbolizes the waves in the water, which lead the dancers and racers to their victory. The colorful ribbons symbolize the prosperity of the village. The possession outside of the village temple further enhances the festive atmosphere. In the end, the Dragon Parade brings good luck and prosperity to everyone.

Incense (2003)
Choreography: Nai-Ni Chen

Dancers: Evan Matthew Stewart, Jainil Mehta, Candace Jarvis, Rio Kikuchi
Music: Joan La Barbara
Costume: Karen Young

This dance was originally inspired by the sculpture titled Nine Muses by Carlos Dorian installed at Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, New Jersey. The choreographer draws ideas from the offering of incense in the long corridors of an ancient temple in her childhood. The rising white clouds of the incense is said to bring the believer’s prayer from their hearts to God's ears. The music reminds her of the mystical elements of nature and the more abstract, formal elements that give structure to our faith and thus our lives. Dancers have chosen this dance to remember the power and grace of Nai-Ni Chen’s choreography.

Ave Maria
Music: Bach / Gounod
Performed by the Ahn Trio

Concrete Stream
Choreography: Nai-Ni Chen
Music: Kenji Bunch, performed by the Ahn Trio
Dancers: Greta Campo, Candace Jarvis, Rio Kikuchi, , Evan Matthew Stewart, Namhui Kim, Jainil Mehta
The choreographer was inspired to create this dance after reading this poem written by a woman poet from Persia. And Kenji Bunch was invited to compose this beautiful music for the Trio.

Skylife
Music: David Balakrishnan, arranged by Kenji Bunch
Performed by the Ahn Trio

UNITY (2022)
Choreography: Nai-Ni Chen, PeiJu Chien-Pott
Composer: Jason Kao Hwang
Music: Jason Kao Hwang featuring the voice of Deanna Relyea and Percussion by Andrew Drury
Dancers: Evan Matthew Stewart, Candace Jarvis, Greta Campo, Sonny Shiu, Rio Kikuchi, Jainil Mentha
Costume: Angel Tsai and SoHarlem’s team led by Javier Valencia

One of the last and final works of Nai-Ni Chen, completed by PeiJu Chien-Pott with commissioned music by Jason Kao Hwang. Unity was inspired by the story that a single stick is easy to break but a bunch is not easily breakable. In this dance, the choreographer integrated numerous elements of Chinese Martial Art into the dance, and all the company dancers received regular training from Martial Arts champion Sifu Yuan Zhang. The story speaks to the power of gathering and Nai-Ni Chen’s hope for community unity during our struggle for equity and anti-hate. The chopstick bundle in the dance also represents the dynamite that the Chinese workers used to blast the mountains of the American West when building the Continental Railroad.

25) ROE V. WADE 2.0, A SATIRICAL PLAY URGING THE PUBLIC

TO DEFEND ABORTION RIGHTS

Carrie Preston, Joel de la Fuente, Florencia Lozano and more Kick Off a Week of Action with May 16 virtual Performance and continues through May 23

Roe v. Wade 2.0, a collective action troupe of artists and activists, invites the public to participate in a week of theatrical action May 16-23 in defense of abortion rights.

The action begins on May 16 at 7 pm ET with an online performance and panel discussion of Roe v. Wade 2.0a satire written by Drama League Award nominee Margaret Vandenburg and performed by a star-studded cast including Carrie Preston (True Blood)Joel de la Fuente (The Man in the High Castle), Florencia Lozano (One Life to Live) and more. The week continues with local readings hosted by artists and organizers across the country through May 23. To gain the greatest impact, and Nationwide spread, there is no barrier to entry, anyone can host and support the initiative. Interested parties are encouraged to sign up to host their own readings. Register for the livestream here and learn more at http://roevwade20.com/kickoff.

The play dramatizes the Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization oral arguments from December 2021. The Supreme Court’s decision in this case, expected as early as June 2022, could overturn Roe v. Wade and effectively end federal protection of abortion rights. A draft of the majority opinion leaked to the press on May 2 implies that such a vote is likely. However, most American adults – nearly six in ten – agree that abortion should be legal in all or most cases (Pew Research Center, 2021). The play is designed to activate this majority by providing a framework for people to come together to understand what’s at stake.

The cast for the May 16 reading of Roe v. Wade 2.0, directed by Lisa Rothe, includes Jo ChimTiffany Clifton, Kathryn Erbe, Joel de la FuenteFlorencia LozanoPeter McCabeCarrie PrestonPortiaCJ Wilsonand Johnny M. Wu. This event is pay-what-you-can and open to the public with all suggested donations benefiting The Pink House Fund, a local fund for people seeking abortions at the only remaining clinic in the state of Mississippi, Jackson Women’s Health Organization. Learn more at http://roevwade20.com/kickoff.

According to Vandenburg, “The Supreme Court is more susceptible to public pressure than meets the eye. The more noise we make, the less likely the Court will run roughshod over reproductive rights.”She added, "The Roe v. Wade 2.0 Coalition believes in the power of art to mobilize and amplify our voices.  We hope this kickoff event will work to encourage participation in this national outcry.”

While the May 16 debut performance is professionally produced by a team based in New York, anyone is welcome to host their own reading to bring people together in their community around this issue.  Further readings for the week of May 16-23 are taking shape in Chicago, Minneapolis, and other cities across the country. Members of the public interested in hosting their own reading are invited to download the script from roevwade20.com, and fill out a brief form to be listed on the website.

THE GREEN ROOM 42
(570 10TH AVENUE, NYC)

We Will Not Be Silent, a benefit concert to honor and support those courageously resisting oppression today, featuring songs from White Rose: The Musical, with book & lyrics by Brian Belding and music by Natalie Brice, will be presented at The Green Room 42 (570 10th Avenue) on Thursday, May 19 at 7pm. Tickets may be obtained here.

White Rose is the true story of a group of German university students who secretly met to write, print, and distribute leaflets exposing Hitler's lies and deception to their fellow Germans during WWII. In the musical, Sophie Scholl arrives in Munich to join her brother, Hans, at the university. Inspired by a rebellious professor, Sophie joins with a group of fellow students to meet, discuss, and carry out their plans for resisting Nazi rule. Sophie is passionate, impulsive, and bold...traits that are dangerous in Hitler's Germany. White Rose is a passionate new musical which captures that spirit of bravery and rebellion.

The proceeds from this concert will be donated to Human Rights Watch, which investigates abuses happening in all corners of the world, protecting vulnerable civilians, as well as refugees and children.
