REVITALIZED NORTHWEST COAST HALL
OPENS TO THE PUBLIC
AFTER MULTI-YEAR RENOVATION
The Northwest Coast Hall will returned to public view at the American Museum of Natural History on May 13, 2022 with new exhibits developed with Indigenous communities from the Pacific Northwest Coast.
The gallery presents the vitality and persistence of Native Nations and Pacific Northwest Coast cultural treasures enlivened with interpretation, storytelling, and dynamic media. Showcasing the creativity, scholarship, and history of the living cultures of the Pacific Northwest, the Northwest Coast Hall reopens in the Museum’s oldest gallery, which in 1899 became home to its first permanent exhibit dedicated to the interpretations of cultures. More than 120 years later, the Hall has been fully revitalized, with curation by Peter Whiteley, curator of North American Ethnology at the Museum, and Co-Curator Ḥaa’yuups, Nuu-chah-nulth scholar and cultural historian, working in collaboration with Consulting Curators from the Coast Salish, Gitxsan, Haida, Haíłzaqv, Kwakwakaw’akw, Nuxulk, Tlingit, and Tsimshian communities.
The 10,200 square-foot Hall presents more than 1,000 cultural treasures including:
- the iconic 63-foot-long Great Canoe, the largest Northwest Coast dugout canoe in existence
- more than 60 monumental carvings, ranging from 3 to 17 feet tall, including an immense Raven Nuxalk house entrance pole
- magnificent examples of Pacific Northwest Coast material culture, including a Nuu-chah-nulth ceremonial Wolf curtain stretching more than 37 feet long
- new pieces created specifically for the Hall, including a 6-foot red cedar pole showing the different stages of carving a monumental pole
- an exhibit featuring works by present-day Native artists, illustrating the influence of styles from past generations today, including in fashion and youth culture like skateboards and sneakers
- a rotating gallery of contemporary art that showcases the continuity and transformation of Indigenous creative traditions
- multimedia displays highlighting the peoples of the Pacific Northwest and their persisting traditions in the face of challenges that continue to confront their communities today.

7) BEETLEJUICE the Musical
Celebrates World Goth Day
Sunday, May 22 at The Marquis Theatre
The Ghost-with-the-Most has been triumphantly resurrected on Broadway and blowing the roof off the Marquis Theatre (210 West 46th Street), and on Sunday, May 22nd, in celebration of World Goth Day BEETLEJUICE the Musical partners with New Goth City in association with InJoy Entertainment for a goth-tastic, exclusive, darkly decadent day. In addition to attending the 3pm matinee performance of BEETLEJUICE, there will be pre-show pageantry and a post-show ghoulish procession through the Broadway Theatre district to an “afterlife” gathering. Visit newgothcity.com for ticket information and more details.
Full-time Goths and Daycrawlers alike are encouraged to dress in their best gothic finery and gather at the Marriot Marquis Breezeway of the Marquis Theatre (210 West 46th Street) at 2:30pm to take photos with the Beetlejuice Fan Art Mural before the show, followed by the 3pm performance of BEETLEJUICE at Broadway’s Marquis Theatre.
World Goth Day is a dark celebration of Gothic Pride founded in 2009 by John Holley and held annually on May 22nd. What began as a day to promote Goth happenings in the UK and spread awareness and unity in the gothic community has transformed into an international extravaganza of all things macabre.
New Goth City was founded in 2007 by William Welles as an online Goth scene event guide to unify the community within the New York City tri-state area. Since then, NGC has grown into only nationwide Goth/Alternative lifestyle community online travel guide, featuring social & cultural events, sightseeing locations, shopping establishments, and food & drink destinations across America.
InJoy Entertainment, founded by Cindy Sibilsky in 2011, is an NYC-based full-service multimedia entertainment company for Broadway, Off-Broadway, and international events focusing on global cultural exchange.

The Town Hall presents Broadway By The Year: From The Ziegfeld Follies To Moulin Rouge on Monday, May 23 at 8pm. Created, written, directed and hosted by Scott Siegel for The Town Hall, the evening will continue Broadway By The Year’s 21st landmark season at The Town Hall (123 W. 43rd Street).
In this second concert of the Broadway by the Year season, audience members will get a one-night-only history of jukebox musicals and musical revues. And the truth is, an extraordinary number of hit Broadway shows fit the description of these two kinds of shows. These oftentimes maligned genres have played an important role in the resurrection of songs, and styles from rock ’n’ roll (Jersey Boys,Beautiful, All Shook Up) to classical music (Kismet), and from country (Ring of Fire) to Rhythm & Blues (Black & Blue, After Midnight). And they have highlighted oftentimes forgotten composers, bringing their names back into the limelight, such as Eubie Blake with Eubie!and Fats Waller with Ain’t Misbehavin’.
Tickets for Broadway By The Year are $57-$67. For tickets and information, please visit www.thetownhall.org or call 800-982-2787. The Broadway By The Year concert series is part of The Town Hall’s presenting season.

White Rose is the true story of a group of German university students who secretly met to write, print, and distribute leaflets exposing Hitler's lies and deception to their fellow Germans during WWII. In the musical, Sophie Scholl arrives in Munich to join her brother, Hans, at the university. Inspired by a rebellious professor, Sophie joins with a group of fellow students to meet, discuss, and carry out their plans for resisting Nazi rule.
