The South Street Seaport Museum announces Archtober 2016 at the Seaport Museum, a series of special walking and sailing tours celebrating the architecture of the Seaport District and Schermerhorn Row. Presented in association with Archtober, Architecture and Design Month New York City, and in honor of Schermerhorn Row's selection as Archtober Building of the Day on Monday, October 10, 2016, the Seaport Museum announces the opening of its new special exhibition The Architecture of Trade: Schermerhorn Row and the Seaport. The exhibition is presented in two parts, in the museum's mezzanine level and fourth floor galleries at 12 Fulton Street.
The Architecture of Trade: Schermerhorn Row and the Seaportexamines the life of Schermerhorn Row, Manhattan's only surviving row of Federal style merchant counting houses, and its place in the Seaport at South Street through the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as its connection to New York's enduring urban evolution. What happened on South Street ignited New York's transformation from a provincial trading town into a global metropolis. The architecture of Schermerhorn Row traces this dramatic change.
The exhibition in the mezzanine area, accessible from the main entrance of the Seaport Museum on 12 Fulton Street, is dedicated to Schermerhorn Row's more recent history in the 20th century. Using photographs and documents, the exhibition follows the story of Schermerhorn Row and the Seaport as they were rescued by preservationists from certain demolition, and covers the Row's early restorations starting in the 1970s.
By limited tour only, the fourth floor galleries of Schermerhorn Row will be opened to explore the 19th century portion of the exhibition. Here, Schermerhorn Row's early life is covered, from its very beginning as a real estate investment in an era of booming maritime trade on the East River, to its changing circumstances in the late 19th century as the Seaport declined in commercial significance. This story is told through artifacts from the collection, architectural elements, and the building itself. Within Schermerhorn Row are the preserved remains of rooms abandoned in the early 20th century.
Due to the fragile nature of the preserved rooms and the need to climb several flights of stairs, entry to the fourth floor exhibition will be limited. Access will be through an exclusive guided tour only. Tours will be available twice a month. Tour tickets are $15 ($10 for Museum members), and must be purchased in addition to general admission. In The Pen, an everyday morning becomes everything but when a seemingly innocuous obstacle shatters Laura's (Nancy Anderson) routine and threatens her prompt arrival to work. Ghosts of the past collide with present day demons as she struggles to rise above her compulsion and leave her apartment. In The Booty Call, a young man (Michael Thurber) receives a booty call while creating a demo of his recent compositions.
