Drag the Musical doesn't particularly break any new ground as far as its basic plot is concerned. It is fairly cliched and revolves around a former couple who are now mortal enemies forced to join forces to accomplish their goals which in this case is to hold on to their businesses by keeping their neighborhood from being gentrified thereby keeping their found families intact. It is a story that has been told a million times before. However, what sets this particular show apart is that the pair at its center are drag queens.
Of course, drag queens are just people like everyone else although unfortunately, not everyone sees it that way. However, they are not often given a chance to be at the center of such a basic simple story. Thus, in that sense it is groundbreaking.
Even though the basic gist of the plot may be familiar these types of stories are popular for a reason. They cover important relatable topics. In this show, important topics covered include family and acceptance. They also touch our hearts and make us feel something.
This show also includes some raucously rocking musical numbers which you can sample on the show's website. The music is fun, but not particularly memorable, It does get quite loud at times. Thus, if you are sensitive to loud noises, this might not be the show for you. It is also not a good show for young children due to language, situations, and vulgarity. If you are a fan of RuPaul's Drag Race, you won't want to miss this show because the cast includes several past contestants including at least one former winner.
