I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

More Theater Monday - Lucky Man: A Warrior's Journey

We were given complimentary tickets to Lucky Man for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Lucky Man:  A Warrior's Journey

Where: Gene Frankel Theatre
             24 Bond St.
             New York, NY

When: This event took place from June 5 - 22, 2025

As an up-and-coming young actor, Thomas G. Waites quickly rose through the ranks and was a rising star when he was chosen to play the role of Fox in Walter Hill's cult classic 1979 film Warriors. In fact, he was meant to be the star of the picture, but after one too many arguments with the director, not only was his role diminished, but he was fired from the picture. Thus, he developed a reputation for being difficult to work with, and his career never quite reached the heights it might have. Personal problems and a taste for drink didn't help matters. It was actually the latter that led to some of the former. Although he was able to make some other great films with talented directors and stars, including The Thing, directed by John Carpenter and starring Kurt Russell, he never had the career he might have had without all that.

Lucky Man is Waites' own story told in his own words as well as through his music. He plays the guitar and sings accompanied by a three-piece band. The four share a good rapport, and the songs are nice and quite meaningful to Waites' story. However, it is far more interesting to hear him tell his story. Thus, it would have been nice to have more of that. Otherwise, it was an interesting and at times relatable story and a cautionary tale not only for young aspiring and/or up-and-coming performers, but also for anyone leaning toward an overdependency on any kind of chemical substances or alcohol.

And that's our view. Tune in tomorrow for Tips for Tuesday.

Still More Theater Saturday - Dorothy's Dictionary

We were given complimentary tickets to Dorothy's Dictionary for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Dorothy's Dictionary

Where: A.R.T./New York Theatres
             502 W. 53rd St.
             New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 12 and Up

When: Through June 29, 2025

Zan is a troubled young man who has been assigned community service rather than jail time after injuring a classmate. He is required to assist ailing librarian Dorothy. Despite the many differences between them, including age and background, the pair form an affecting bond in this short but bittersweet play. If you are a crier, be prepared for a lot of tears as this show will both touch your heart and break it. Those dealing with grief themselves may want to skip it as the show delves heavily into issues of loss, among other themes. Otherwise, it is definitely worth seeing and a reminder of how deeply we can affect and be affected by others, no matter how different we may seem.

Theater Thursday - Lights Out: Nat King Cole

We received complimentary tickets to Lights Out: Nat King Cole for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Lights Out: Nat King Cole

Where: NYTW
             83 E. 4th St.
             New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 16+

When: Through June 29, 2025

In 1956, Nat King Cole was the first African American to host a television variety series. Because of rampant racial prejudices, particularly in the South, the show had trouble attracting advertisers and was cancelled after only one season. Lights Out: Nat King Cole is a reimaging of the finale broadcast of the show.

The show was written by the multitalented Colman Domingo. Mr. Domingo, also known for his acting and directing, has been nominated for numerous awards in various categories, including two Oscars and two Tonys, and has won several, including a Primetime Emmy Award.

The role of Cole is played by Dule Hill, best known for the TV shows The West Wing and Psych. If you've only seen him in these roles, it is a real treat to see him show off more of his triple threat skills, as the role also requires singing and dancing. Hill's singing is fine, but he really shines as an actor and dancer. His performance as a man grappling with what he wants his legacy to be his heartbreaking, and his tap dance duet with Daniel J. Watts in the role of Sammy Davis Jr. is a highlight of the show.

Watts is a standout in general as well. He is a blast of energy in the role of Davis, who functions as a kind of conscience for Cole.

Despite the aforementioned singing and dancing, the show is not billed as a musical but rather as a play with music, although it has plenty of songs. It may even have more songs than some actual musicals. If you are a fan of old standards, particularly those of Nat King Cole, you will enjoy the music. All of his best-known songs are covered and more.

Unfortunately, the show is much more than just a blast from the past. It is all too scarily relevant to today's world in the worst of ways.

And that's our view. For more about Lights Out: Nat King Cole or to purchase tickets to one of the few remaining performances, visit www.nytw.org/show/lights-out-nat-king-cole,

Where-To-Go Wednesday - Drumthwacket

What: Drumthwacket

Where: 354 Stockton St.
             Princeton, NJ

Who: Recommended for Ages 8 +

When: September to June. Online Registration Opens August 1.

Drumthwacket, named after the estate of a character in a Sir Walter Scott historical novel, has been the official residence of the New Jersey governor since 1982. Surprisingly, however, very few governors have actually lived on site. Generally, they prefer to remain in their own homes and just use the mansion for official business and receptions.

Public tours of the mansion are available from September through June. Tours are free and take place on Wednesdays.  School tours are also available by arrangement, and virtual tours are available at any time. Advance reservations are required for all public tours, and proper ID must be shown to get access to the property on the day of your tour. Tours are not given when the governor is in residence. Thus, there are occasions when a scheduled tour is cancelled. However, this is a rare occurrence because, as previously mentioned, most governors do not live there, and the governor's schedule is usually known in advance.

Drumthwacket is located in the middle of a residential area in Princeton, NJ. Although the house is a decent size, it's not as big as you might think. There are six public rooms downstairs and 12 private rooms upstairs. Only the downstairs rooms are part of the tour.

Unlike most tours of this type, the tour doesn't really delve into the usage of various rooms and famous events that may have occurred there. It focuses more on the background of the rooms' furnishings and decor as well as the history of the house itself. Photography is not permitted inside but only on the mansion's grounds, except during special holiday time tours when photography is allowed in front of a particular ornate fireplace.

The entire tour takes about an hour. You can extend your visit slightly by exploring the mansion's gardens on your own. However, the gardens are not very big. Therefore, a visit shouldn't take much more than an hour anyway.

And that's our view. For more about Drumthwacket and Drumthwacket tours, go to drumthwacket.org. Online registration for the next round of tours, which will be starting in September, begins August 1.

Tips for Tuesday - Books: An Irish Summer & Come Knocking; & Movie: A Season for Love

We may have been given complimentary copies and/or access for review purposes to any books, products, and/or any other visual or audio media mentioned below. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

Books: An Irish Summer & Come Knocking

Today, we recommend An Irish Summer by Alexandra Paige. When the bed and breakfast where Chelsea has been working since college unexpectedly closes, she takes a temporary job at a hostel in Galway, Ireland, until she can get her life back on track. At first, she hates everything. However, tour guide Collin is determined to show her all that Ireland has to offer, and she quickly finds herself drawn to the place, the people, and especially the man, although she is still determined to go home at the end of the summer.

This is a sweet and charming romance, albeit largely predictable. Chelsea and Collin make an adorable couple, even though you can see the end coming right from the beginning.  It is nice, however, that the third act conflict is actually believable in terms of the story and not some annoying and unnecessary contrivance that comes out of nowhere.

There are plenty of touching relationships and great family vibes as Chelsea and her coworkers quickly become like family. She also has an extremely supportive best friend from back home, who is like a sister to her.  It is nice how close they remain despite the distance and the fact that their lives are quickly diverging.

The book also functions as a kind of travelogue. You can get a taste of Ireland just from reading it.

On the whole, if you are a romance fan and not necessarily looking for something new and different but happy to enjoy a tried-and-true formula romance, you should enjoy this book.

Today, we recommend Come Knocking by Mike Bockhoven. Come Knocking is a unique and interactive theatrical experience as well as the hottest ticket around. Then, it all comes crashing down in one horrific night of violence. Intrepid reporter Adam Jakes is determined to uncover the truth of what happened.

This is an intriguing thrill ride of a story, but definitely not for the faint of heart. Much of it deals with the absolute worst of humanity, and therefore, it can be hard to read. It is, however, quite unique and exciting.

The story is told through a series of interviews. While this allows the reader to get into the minds of a variety of characters, it also distances the reader from the story since you don't get a clear overall picture until the end of the book. This can be a good thing; however, as it slightly blunts the impact of the extreme gruesomeness of the story, otherwise, unless you are a psychopath, the horror of it all is too much to take in all at once.

The book may be triggering if you or a loved one has been a victim of guns, fire, a severe beating, or other types of violence. However, if this does not apply to you and you are looking for something completely unique and you are not afraid of a book that is loaded with descriptions of extremely appalling violence, you may enjoy it.

Movie: A Season for Love

Today, we are talking about A Season for Love. This film starts out as a sweet romance between a highly motivated doctor and a slightly awkward filmmaker, who is refreshingly free of macho posturing. However, it quickly devolves into soap operaish territory. The ending is both unsatisfying and unclear, as the actor playing the filmmaker mumbles his lines although he has done this throughout the movie, it becomes a particular problem now as it makes it hard to determine the final line of the film without the ability to go back and listen to it again, maybe even more than once.

And that's our view. An Irish Summer and Come Knocking will both publish next Tuesday, July 1. A Season for Love is available on DVD and digitally for rental or purchase now.

Tune in tomorrow for Where-To-Go Wednesday.

More Theater Monday - Kafka

We were given complimentary tickets to Kafka for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Kafka

Where: 59E59 Theaters
             59 E. 59 St.
             New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 13 and Up

When: Through June 29, 2025

Kafka is the story of the esteemed author Franz Kafka, as seen through the eyes of those who loved him best (or didn't), including friends, lovers, critics, and more. The show is Jack Klaff's brilliant tour de force. He not only wrote the show and takes on the role of Kafka himself, but he also plays every other character in the show. Watching it is like witnessing a masterclass in acting as Klaff quickly and convincingly slips in and out of the various characters. With each character, he takes on a different voice and mannerisms, making it easy to differentiate between them. Even if you are not a fan of Franz Kafka and/or his writing, this show is still worth seeing for the amazing artistry of the performance.

And that's our view. For more about Kafka or to purchase tickets, visit www.59e59.org/shows/show-detail/kafka.
