Suffs boldly explores the victories and failures of a struggle for equality that’s far from over. Suffs stars book writer, composer, and lyricist Shaina Taub in the role of Alice Paul, making history as only the second woman ever to write the book, music, lyrics and star in her own Broadway musical. Taub is an Obie Award-winning, Emmy Award-nominated songwriter and winner of the Kleban Prize, the Fred Ebb Award, the Jonathan Larson Grant, and the NYCLU's Michael Friedman Freedom Award for activism. She created and starred in acclaimed musical adaptations of Twelfth Night and As You Like It at Shakespeare in the Park. She has released three solo albums and is currently signed to Atlantic Records.

The Flea announced today their fourth annual line-up of Juneteenth public performances. These Black artists, through their virtuosic practices, will stage public performances in celebration of Juneteenth. The Flea’s Artistic Director, Niegel Smith, will also participate as a performance artist.
This year, The Flea fully embraces the West African concept of Sankofa, with artistic expressions that touch upon the past and reach into the future. With an amazing group of visual artists, dancers, poets, actors, and multimedia artists, this year’s celebration of Black freedom is designed for the whole family to enjoy.
Each work is featured on a different day throughout the city starting June 15th and ending on Juneteenth, June 19th. The Flea’s Juneteenth program centers the full creative expression of the artists. Giving artists the independence to interpret Black liberation is what gives The Flea’s Juneteenth programming its variety and excitement.

Liberation Play is an activation day to celebrate Juneteenth at DuYe Moves' lawn space on Colonels Row on Governors Island. She will guide participants through a QiGong set that frees the mind and relaxes the body. These moves will serve DuYe Movers long after the day’s lesson in their everyday lives. Poet Derick Cross will perform and hold space for guided open mic expressions of Personal Liberation. Angel Kaba’s Afro’Dance New York will bring joy and happiness through a class suitable for all body types and levels, along with a performance. Sam Hamashima’s NYSCA Artist Commission Grant new play たまGO or TAMAGO is set in 2050, in a world of fluid identities where plastic surgery is now so advanced that changing “skins” is an easy month-long series of appointments with a surgeon. This new play explores the nuances of race, culture and identity in a futuristic exploration of the phenomenon of “Dolezalification” (referring to Rachel Dolezal), cultural appropriation, and the dangers of whiteness as a cultural “norm.”

From Friday, June 28 – Sunday, June 30, the Zoo invites guests to come and experience the Zoo with a 150th flair. The first 150 guests on Friday, Saturday and Sunday will receive a commemorative “150 Years of Philly Zoo” pin. The Prince Fellowship, in association with Columbia University School of the Arts, announces that applications are now open for the 2024 Fellowship program. The Prince Fellowship, formerly known as The T. Fellowship, was renamed in 2021 to honor the extraordinary work of producer, director and T. Fellowship founder Harold Prince. Prince created the program to usher in the next generation of creative producers. Selected fellows receive a stipend of $10,000, a $20,000 budget for the development of a new theatrical production, access to courses in Columbia’s MFA Theatre Management & Producing Program, and mentorship from prominent producers and industry specialists.

The Rehearsal for Truth International Theater Festival honoring Václav Havel, announces programming for this year’s fest. Entitled Dark Dreams, the festival runs June 12 – 23, 2024 at the Bohemian National Hall, located at 321 East 73rd Street in New York City.
Rehearsal for Truth International Theater Festival is an annual showcase of contemporary Central and Eastern European Theater, founded in 2017. It is a shared endeavor of the Václav Havel Center and the Bohemian Benevolent and Literary Association in partnership with numerous other cultural and performing arts organizations. The festival honors the artistic and political legacy of the Czech playwright/dissident/president Václav Havel. They support exchanges between American and European theater professionals and celebrate the power of the theater to transform our lives.
This year’s festival (including the May reading series) features work from Austria, Belarus, Estonia, Czechia, Germany, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, and Ukraine. Much of the work featured this year is surreal or dreamlike, finding ways to comment on past and present tragedies, from the legacy of the Nazi and Soviet years to the current war in Ukraine. It explores fascism but also beauty, darkness but also laughter.
The festival begins with one of the oldest authors in the vein of the dark and comically surreal, Franz Kafka, on the 100th anniversary of his death. It continues on with not only theater but dance and music. This year, for the first time, film is included in the lineup, specifically film of theater and dance. Most programs include discussions with either the authors, experts on some of the subjects addressed, or both.
Artistic Director Edward Einhorn states, “Rehearsal for Truth is a rare opportunity to hear artistic voices from Central and Eastern Europe. We are at a time marked by war, and once again the region finds itself in the center of conflict. These plays comment on past and present tragedies, from the legacy of the Nazi and Soviet years to the current war in Ukraine. It explores fascism but also beauty, darkness but also laughter.”

Stefanie Nelson Dancegroup (SND), led by NYC-based dance veteran Stefanie Nelson, is proud to present Moving Memory: NEXT GENERATION, an evening of original movement-based works centered around the evocative themes of memory, erasure, and forgetting. The event will take place on Friday, June 14 at 8pm at Broadway Presbyterian Church, 601 West 114th St., NYC. Tickets are pay-what-you-can, with a suggested donation of $20. Moving Memory: NEXT GENERATION will showcase innovative new pieces from emerging choreographic voices curated by Maya Orchin, Prentice Whitlow, and Chris Matthews. All of the choreographers featured are alumni of Dance Italia, SND's renowned educational dance festival. Each summer, Dance Italia gathers educators, artists, students, and performers from around the world, in an inspiring environment designed to challenge, share, and expand their skills and ideas. Moving Memory: NEXT GENERATION supports the development of new artistic voices, strengthens artistic connections, and provides opportunities for the next generation of artists to gain exposure and recognition in our community.

TADA! Youth Theater, a unique Drama Desk award-winning nonprofit youth theater, presents a virtual event to watch its most recent production via online streaming. TADA!'s first two act musical and world premiere of Common Ground is available now through June 30, 2024 for your viewing pleasure at home (or anywhere you like)!
This 90 minute musical, performed by a diverse cast of talented young actors, ages 11-18, is recommended for ages 11 and up. This production contains mature language and flashing lights.

Synopsis: America is a story that we keep telling. Until it comes true. It’s 2018. Immigration crackdowns. Family separation. Life is scary for immigrants in the U.S. But 15-year-old Ysabella Martinez hits town with stars in her eyes, ready to conquer New York and win fame and fortune as an influencer. She joins an after school program for fellow immigrants from all over the world, finds a prickly new best friend in NYC-born Emma, and begins to build her new life. But when ICE detains her and her family, she and her new friends discover that America is nothing like they thought it was.

TADA! Youth Theater presents week-long musical theater summer camps where children create and perform a brand new musical every week, all summer long! Summer camps take place from June 17th through August 23rd at TADA! Youth Theater, 15 West 28th Street in Manhattan. Campers will be divided into groups by their ages. Children, ages 4-5, attend 9AM to 1:30PM, and children ages 5-7 and 8-12 attend 9AM – 5PM.

Throughout history, Black women have navigated a complex tapestry of societal expectations, cultural heritage, and personal identity. We aim to shine a light on their stories, voices, and psychological landscapes. What makes a community leader? What does it take for a woman to step into that role, and to bring other women on the journey with her? Join us for a panel discussion on the psychology and mental health of Black women, as represented by Aunt Ester in August Wilson's Gem in the Ocean. A community celebration in partnership with the T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center and others, featuring a dynamic presentation from Grammy-nominated poet, activist, and author Kevin Powell. This interactive talk and conversation will cover the history of Juneteenth, why it has re-emerged in the 21st century, and why the holiday is tied to larger conversations around opportunities for all Americans.
