1) A Groundbreaking Achievement of Outrageous Importance That People Scroll By Barely Impacted

Artificial intelligence has arrived and Brooklyn University students are using it to cheat in confounding and futuristically troubling ways. The Assistant Dean is begging the Executive Dean to provide guidance, but how can direction be given for a technology that evolves every 0.5 seconds? Is higher education any match for AI? Or is Brooklyn University on a one-way trip into madness?

3) Bring Them Back

In the meta dark comedy Bring Them Back, screenwriter Paul (Paul Korzinski) is still sheltering in place long after the Covid threat, only sometimes visited by his schleppy older family friend, Trudy (Carole Forman*). Now of a certain age, Paul realizes that more people he has known are dead than alive. With amusing desperation, and against Trudy’s better judgement, Paul resolves to bring them back using a medieval Cabalistic ritual that never works due to his countless mistakes. Nevertheless, random affinity groups of dead former friends, family, enemies, and lovers of both sexes begin to appear. Is it all in his mind? Is it on the page? How do these unorthodox methods satisfy Paul's desire to resolve unfinished business?

4) The Hours Are Feminine

In the summer of 1960, Hurricane Donna ravages the Northeast and a Puerto Rican family of three, who has never left home before, moves to rural Long Island. Evalisse, Fernán and their son Jaivín rent a dilapidated little house on the property of an old middle-class Italian named Charlie. Tensions rise between the families of old immigrants and new. Written and directed by José Rivera, this autobiographical play explores female friendship and the price of assimilation and the American way of life with humor, tears, and a final, healing reckoning.

New Jersey Premieres: CENTURY by Amy Hall Garner and
Me, Myself and You by Elizabeth Roxas-Dobrish

Beloved as one of the world’s most popular dance companies, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater completes its 65th anniversary coast-to-coast United States tour to 21 cities at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) MOTHER’S DAY WEEKEND with performances Friday, May 10 at 8pm, Saturday, May 11th at 8pm and Sunday, May 12 at 3pm.

Ailey returns to the NJPAC stage for the 25th time with exciting New Jersey premieres, a powerful new production in celebration of this year’s Max Roach Centennial, and repertory favorites including Ailey’s must-see American masterpiece Revelations.

Ailey’s 32 extraordinary dancers include two New Jersey natives: Montclair’s Chalvar Monteiro(Montclair) and Newark’s Christopher Taylor (Newark); and three AileyCamp alumni: TaylorSolomon Dumas, and De’Anthony Vaughan.

Audiences will have the opportunity to experience the New Jersey premieres of two works specially commissioned for AileyAmy Hall Garner’s first work for the Company, CENTURY, and former Ailey dancer Elizabeth Roxas-Dobrish’s duet, Me, Myself and You. CENTURY is a deeply personal piece inspired by Hall Garner’s grandfather on the eve of his 100th birthday. Taking a cue from his spirited essence and set to the music of Ray Charles, Count Basie, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and more, CENTURY is a celebration of life, resilience, and joy. Me, Myself and You is a dreamlike dance about reminiscence. Set to Damien Sneed and Brandie Sutton’s rendition of “In A Sentimental Mood,” it conjures the memories of love and passion of a woman who is asking herself if she should let go or forge ahead.

New productions include: the seven-minute tour-de-force Solo by Hans van Manen, the internationally celebrated choreographer long associated with the Dutch National Ballet; and Alonzo King’s Following the Subtle Current Upstream (2000), an audacious, non-stop piece that investigates deeply rooted affinities between Western and Eastern classical forms, elemental materials, the natural world, and the human spirit. Described by choreographer Alonzo King as “a piece about how to return to joy,” Following the Subtle Current Upstream mirrors life’s boisterous waves and reminds us that everything in nature seeks to return to its source.

Also on the program are returning favorites: Survivors (1986) by Alvin Ailey and Mary Barnett, and Ailey’s signature masterpiece Revelations (1960). The former is Ailey’s impassioned tribute to the profound courage and terrible anguish of Nelson and Winnie Mandela. Max Roach’s richly varied drumming and Abbey Lincoln’s vocals set the emotional tone for this powerful work that lifts up those who resist oppression in any form. Revelations has been seen by more people around the world than any other modern dance work, moving audiences with its powerful storytelling and soul-stirring music and evoking timeless themes of determination, hope, and transcendence. Ending each performance is the finale Revelations. Springing from Ailey’s childhood memories of growing up in the south and attending services at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Texas, Revelations pays homage to the rich cultural heritage of the African American community and explores the emotional spectrum of the human condition.

Don't miss Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Tickets can be purchased by visiting NJPAC.org or calling 888.GO.NJPAC (888.466.5722) or by visiting the NJPAC Box Office.

14) AMERICAN CLASSICAL ORCHESTRA PERFORMS ASTRONOMICAL,

THE FINAL CONCERT OF ITS 2023-24 SEASON AT ALICE TULLY HALL

MAY 8, 2024

Program Features Concertos and Symphonies by Johan Daniel Berlin, C.P.E. Bach,

William Herschel, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Acclaimed Oboist Gonzalo Ruiz is Guest Soloist

Founder and Artistic Director Thomas Crawford leads the American Classical Orchestra (ACO) in its final program of the season on Wednesday, May 8, at 7 PM at Alice Tully Hall. The “Astronomical” title of the concert was inspired by Mozart’s “Jupiter” Symphony, which anchors the evening’s theme. The work is said to have gotten its nickname after Mozart’s death from a London-based impresario, who said its opening chords brought to mind the chief Roman deity tossing thunderbolts from above. “Astronomical” also reflects a time in the 18th century when measuring methodologies and optical advances were inspiring, even among non-scientists, a surge of interest in natural phenomena. The evening brings these developments to light with works by Johan Daniel Berlin, known for meteorological and astronomical observations; and William Herschel, who discovered the planet Uranus. Herschel’s Oboe Concerto will be performed by virtuoso oboist Gonzalo Ruiz

NYC Premiere of BODYSONNET’S "please come alone”

(Tickets $20) Ticket link: https://secure.givelively.org/event/satellite-collective-inc/satellite-tribeca/satellite-tribeca-bodysonnet-presents-please-come-alone

From creator-performers Moscelyne ParkeHarrison and Mio Ishikawa of BODYSONNET, “please come

alone" is a series of solo dance performances exploring what it means to be alone, and to come together. In the piece, performers participate in exercises to explore their artistic and narrative values as they devise movement solos. Each performer’s process will culminate in a twenty-minute movement score that shares the same music score and includes movement references to the other solo. The soloists rehearse apart from each other, thus experiencing each other's work for the first time in performance.

The work was originally performed in The Berkshires, MA in June 2021, and workshopped further with

MFA drama students at Yale University in winter 2021 with Dramaturg Hannah Gellman.

GIANT PRINTS ON CANVAS, PHOTOGRAPHS ON METAL, and BLIMP MASCOTS

Reception for visual artists Kevin Draper and Lora Robertson and New York premiere of “Sad Blimp Twins”

Open to the public; Register for a free show poster: https://secure.givelively.org/event/satellite-collective-inc/satellite-tribeca/satellite-tribeca-reception-for-kevin-draper-and-lora-robertson

Kevin Draper’s show “The Cartoon Before The Movie” features large scale prints on paper and canvas created with aerospace 3D software and innovative hand printing techniques. Beginning with nostalgic imagery of an older New York, the imagery looks out toward space, along the avenues of Central Park and the sidewalks of Park Avenue, and sees a future of artificial intelligence and buildings seeking autonomy. Images feature bold industrial colors and a unique, expressionistic use of the architectural drafting language.

Lora Robertson’s show “Agony In The Scrub Pines” features large, complex photographic compositions reproduced on smooth sheet metal. Robertson works with digital cameras produced as part of the Hubble telescope program, and the intense focus on color and light is almost pre-Raphaelite in complexity. With her digital tools Robertson translates the naturalistic settings and historical lighting techniques into photographs that are easily mistaken for paintings until a closer view shows how these have been brought into the present with a wily eye for metaphor and visual easter eggs.

Sad Blimp Twins” are a pair of forty foot long blimps coming to New York for the first time as Satellite’s official mascots. They first flew on the lawn of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum and will premiere in New York inside the gallery at 101 Reade Street. At full inflation, the blimps are fourteen feet in diameter and nearly forty feet long. Designed by Kevin Draper, they act as reminders of distant technologies of observation. Satellite intends to continue development of Sad Blimp Twins and their use as mobile cinema screens.

ARTS PANEL w/FILM AND LIVE BALLET

The New York of Gordon Matta-Clark: Alive in the City Today”

Feature Performance: “Central Park, Earlier In Time”, inspired by Satellite Collective’s “Echo & Narcissus”

Panel moderator Paulina Ascencio Fuentes lives and works between Guadalajara and New York City. She has worked with the Gordon Matta-Clark archives and the Estate on several research projects and exhibitions. Her research outlines transdisciplinary modes of knowledge production and transmission.

Registration Required; includes performances and refreshments. Registration link: https://secure.givelively.org/event/satellite-collective-inc/satellite-tribeca/satellite-tribeca-arts-panel-with-film-and-live-ballet

This intimate panel discussion will focus on creative collaborations between the Estate of Gordon Matta-Clark and Satellite Collective, Site:Lab, and other arts organizations in the US and UK. Panelists will explore how Gordon Matta-Clark’s vision and work in the 1970s can inform 21st Century multimedia performance, dance, and contemporary art. Following the panel, Satellite presents the New York premiere of Central Park, Earlier In Time, a dance work with projection incorporating the drawings of Gordon Matta-Clark. This work is in development for stage presentation.

In his short but prolific career, Gordon Matta-Clark centered collaboration at the core of his artistic practice. Ensconced in the downtown art scene of the 1970s, he not only incorporated film, dance, performance and food into his own work but also regularly participated in other artists’ projects such as performing in Joan Jonas’s film Song Delay, designing set ideas for Mabou Mines, or dancing with the Trisha Brown Dance Company.

Collaboration being central to Gordon Matta-Clark’s legacy, the Estate of Gordon Matta-Clark works with contemporary artists in the generation of new pieces in dialogue with his ideas. Satellite Collective is inspired by similar collaborative methods brought forward into a digital age. Although the art economy has radically changed since the 70s and 80s, the city remains a powerful source of raw material for commentary and transformation. How can engaging in a dialogue with an artist of the past inspire new work that addresses our present moment?

The evening will include a screening of a Gordon Matta-Clark short film with introduction by Co-Director of his Estate, Jessamyn Fiore and a feature performance of live ballet and projection. Using Gordon Matta-Clark’s drawings as source material, Satellite artist Kevin Draper has translated them into three-dimensional space bringing Matta-Clark’s images into a futuristic New York.

Panelists include: Jessamyn Fiore, Co-Director, Estate of Gordon Matta-Clark; Artists of SITE:LAB, and Kevin Draper and Lora Robertson, Satellite Collective.

Feature Performance : “Central Park, Earlier In Time”

Narcissus hunts in the city by night in a powerful solo. He meets Echo, and a complex, transformational duet unfolds as the city and park visually enfolds them. This piece is inspired by “Echo and Narcissus,” premiered at BAM Fisher in 2018. The New York Times said “In terms of inspiration, Satellite Collective bubbles over with creativity.” With choreography by Norbert De La Cruz III and score by Aaron Severini, an exclusive recording by ShoutHouse, and a collective of musicians creating “a lavishly orchestrated, absolutely unique blend of post rock, art-rock and indie classical.” (New York Music Daily)

33) New from TCG Books:

Ironbound & Sanctuary City

By Martyna Majok

Theatre Communications Group (TCG) is pleased to announce the publication of Ironbound & Sanctuary City by Martyna MajokThis book collects two compelling, uncompromising plays about the immigrant experience by the Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright of Cost of Living. With humor, grace, and an unsentimental eye, Martyna Majok explores the challenges immigrants face as they strive to carve out a place in a harsh and often indifferent America.

In Ironbound, Darja, a Polish immigrant, negotiates the terms for her future at a rundown bus stop in New Jersey. Over the course of twenty years and three relationships, Darja’s initial search for love becomes eclipsed by her desire for security and survival.

In Sanctuary City, two undocumented teenagers seek refuge in each other and make a pact to stake their claim in America together. But as their experiences and opportunities diverge, their bond begins to fray, and each must make a difficult choice about what they are willing to sacrifice for their dreams.
