1) The Lightning Thief

The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical was written by Joe Tracz, and Composed by Rob Rokicki and adapted from the best-selling book The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan and features an original rock score. The musical follows the story of Percy Jackson, the half-blood son of a Greek god, who has newly-discovered powers he can't control, a destiny he doesn't want, and a mythology textbook's worth of monsters on his trail. When Zeus's master lightning bolt is stolen and Percy becomes the prime suspect, he has to find and return the bolt to prove his innocence and prevent a war between the gods. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the thief. He must travel to the Underworld and back; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and come to terms with the father who abandoned him.

2) Nunsense

After a bad batch of vichyssoise killed off fifty-two of the Little Sisters of Hoboken, the survivors emptied the coffers to bury the deceased, but ran out of cash before the last few bodies could be laid to rest! (Don’t worry – they’re in the kitchen freezer!) To raise funds they decide to put on a variety show. Will their prayers be answered before the health department discovers their secret? With hilarious talent acts, tongue-in-cheek musical numbers, and help from the audience, the show – the 3rd longest running Off-Broadway musical.

15) The Broadway Workroom Series Presents

Loch Lomond

These Scottish lyrics have been sung the world over for hundreds of years, but few know the legend behind them. Through a Celtic-inspired modern musical theater score, the new musical Loch Lomond from writing team Maggie Herskowitz and Neil Douglas Reilly (Between Gods & Kings) breathes stunning life into a fable previously lost to time.

1745. The height of the Scottish Jacobite rebellion. When two Scottish rebel brothers are captured by the English, they are faced with an impossible choice, a ticking clock, and the end of their heroic ambitions. With only six hours left until their fate is decided, brothers Lyle and James must reconcile their desire for freedom and glory with their loyalty to each other… and their love for the women they leave behind. At once a sweeping tale of rebellion and an intimate family portrait, Loch Lomond will take you beyond the lyrics and into the heart of a universal struggle for freedom and love that stands the test of time.

Featuring Direction by Jeff Whiting and Music Direction by James Dobinson, the AEA approved showcase performances of Loch Lomond will be presented at Open Jar Studios from Thursday April 18 to Sunday April 21. The band includes Nicole Shroeder, Mike Petty, and Tristan Marzeski.Full casting to be announced soon. Tickets are free and may be reserved at www.StageDoor.org/broadway-workroom

In an era of austerity, recession, and rising nationalism, two friends are torn apart when the Nazi regime infiltrates their friendship and families to devastating effect. Based on the bestselling book, written as an anti-fascist call to arms and banned in 1930s Germany for dramatically exposing the threat of Nazism, ADDRESS UNKNOWN is a timely warning of how humanity can fail in the face of extreme ideology.

18) NEXT WEEK MARKS THE 81st ANNIVERSARY
OF THE WARSAW GHETTO UPRISING

 Prominent Luminaries to Gather on
April 19 to Mark the Solemn Event

Each April 19th, the Congress for Jewish Culture, along with Friends of the Bund, Jewish Labor Committee and Workers Circle, has organized a gathering of musicians, academics, and survivors and their families at Der Shteyn (the stone) in the Warsaw Ghetto Memorial Plaza in Riverside Park, (83rd/84th Streets). This notably significant annual event is set for next Friday, April 19 at 2 pm, marking the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, the single greatest instance of Jewish armed resistance to the Holocaust, with an academy remembering the victims and fighters of history's greatest crime.

This year’s annual event will feature an impressive array of artists to remember the victims of the Nazi war on European Jewry and commemorate their resistance. 2024 marks the 81st anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, when Jewish resistance fighters in the Warsaw Ghetto—many in their teens and twenties—launched a sustained guerrilla battle in response to a planned Nazi mass deportation to the death camps. They fought without any attainable hope of victory, but with the goal that they would not die in silence. Heroically, they managed to hold off the German army from April 19th to May 16th. It was the largest single revolt by Jews during the Holocaust. 13,000 were killed (some 6,000 among them were burnt alive or died from smoke inhalation). Of the remaining 50,000 Jewish residents, almost all were captured and shipped to concentration camps or killing centers. The Uprising did succeed in delaying the Germans timeline of deportations, and it inspired other resistance movements across the German-occupied areas.

This annual gathering commemorates all who resisted, all who fought, all who died, and all who survived. It follows a tradition established in 1947 by Jewish partisans, ghetto fighters and Holocaust survivors of meeting at the site earmarked by the City of New York for a memorial to the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. It has become an annual gathering of Bundists and members of the secular, progressive Yiddish cultural community, as well as children and grandchildren of the original attendees.

The upcoming program in Riverside Park, including music and readings, will feature Lili Kshensky Baxter (renowned teacher of the history & application of nonviolence; Director Emerita of the Weinberg Center for Holocaust Education), Joanne Borts (appeared in Broadway’s Tony-winning Best Musical Once as well as Fiddler on the Roof starring Topol), Sarah Gordon (lead singer for Yiddish Princess, a NY-based Yiddish-language rock band), Feygele Jacobs (Yiddish singer), Marcel Kshensky (educator & son of Holocaust survivors), Shifee Losacco (Yiddish singer & fundraiser), Julia Mintz (Writer & Director of the recent acclaimed documentary Four Winters; A Story of Jewish Partisan Resistance and Bravery in WW2), Zalmen Mlotek (Artistic Director of the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene), Daniella Rabbani (actress; Off-Broadway: The Golden Land; film & TV: “Scenes from a Marriage,” God Friended Me,” Ocean’s Eight), and Esti Zanoni (student at the Workers Circle Shule).

The event takes place under the open skies, rain or shine, and is free and open to the public.

From Manhattan Plaza's courtyard to the Ellington Room where Alicia first learned to play the piano, the visual soars with the magic of the city, a world full of hopes and dreams and the long-held belief of every New Yorker that “anything is possible here.”

20) Japan Society
Presents
Director's Company x2
April 19 - 20, 2024

On April 19 & 20, Japan Society presents Director’s Company x2. A pioneering 1980s independent production outfit led by Kazuhiko Hasegawa (The Man Who Stole The Sun) and made up of a collective of eight filmmakers from studio, pinku and jishu eiga roots, Director’s Company (1982-1992), known colloquially as “Direkan,” eschewed traditional modes of production to free itself from the constraints of major studios and promote artistic growth and creative expression. Essential to the rise of independent cinema at a time when the studio system was in shambles, Japan Society presents two key works from Direkan: Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Bumpkin Soup and Sogo Ishii’s The Crazy Family. Originally produced for Nikkatsu’s Roman Porno line, Kurosawa’s referential and cinephilic Bumpkin Soup which starred then-popular Gekisha model Yoriko Doguchi in her film debut was considered too strange for release. Kurosawa bought the film back, re-editing and reshooting scenes to craft the feature. Sogo Ishii’s cult classic The Crazy Family celebrates its 40th Anniversary this year. A grotesque and surreal takedown of the family unit, Ishii claimed, “I wanted to show the Japanese family as I saw it.

Screenings take place in Japan Society’s landmarked headquarters at 333 East 47th Street, one block from the United Nations. Lineup and other details subject to change. For complete information, visit japansociety.org.

THE GRAPES OF WRATH

APRIL 17 AT CARNEGIE HALL

Two distinguished actors, Emmy-nominee (SuccessionJ. Smith-Cameron and Emmy Award-winner (ScandalJoe Morton will co-narrate MasterVoices’ revised concert version of The Grapes of Wrath, the 2007 “great American opera” (Musical America) by composer Ricky Ian Gordon and librettist Michael Korie based on John Steinbeck’s landmark novel, on April 17 at Carnegie Hall.

Set in the Great Depression of the 1930s, it tells the story of the Joad family, Oklahoma sharecroppers who, along with thousands of others, become refugees in their own country. As they migrate to find work in the would-be Promised Land of California, they face hardship, resentment, and violence.

In addition to revisions in the orchestration, Gordon and Korie have added a new scene. Says MasterVoices Artistic Director Ted Sperling, “People Again shows the Joad family settling into a government camp where they can actually sleep in a bed, take a shower, use a toilet for the first time in their lives, and start feeling like people again. It’s quite a powerful scene. Additionally, I’ll Be There has been revised as a duet for Tom and Ma.”

28) SOHO PLAYHOUSE PRESENTS 3RD ANNUAL LIGHTHOUSE THEATRE SERIES

When will the competition take place? Over three weeks, April 18 - May 7, 2024.

Who decides the winner? You! And also them. Each selected piece will have three nights to perform over one of the three weeks. Each night, three or four selected pieces will perform. At the end? The audience will vote. After the three weeks are up: They will have the winners. One from each performance group. If they feel like there was one show they just simply can’t let go of…they will pick more. Those winners go on and have the ability to expand their pieces for the next round of performances in June/July. Those productions will also make a portion of box office sales in the second round. There’s more? Yes, from that group an overall winner is picked and that production will have the opportunity to perform as a part of the SoHo Playhouse’s annual International Fringe Encore Series, which includes some of the best productions from around the world.

What will you get? Other than an Off-Broadway credit, a three night performance of your piece and the chance of extending? The Lighthouse Theatre Series will be an incredible, power-packed few nights of theater. They want to bring talented, young artists together: not only for their benefit to scout talent and be immersed in new work, but to bring you all together…who knows, maybe the next Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Donald Glover duo will meet and write a show together.

Why are they doing this? You. They want to know who the next culture-shifting, cutting-edge, brave young artists are in New York City right now. They know how hard it is to get started in this industry, and they believe in throwing your fears to the wind and workshopping your creations. They want to be a home for you to explore your voices, not just now—but always. The Lighthouse Series is just the beginning.
