A) Beginning Performances
In New Jersey
1) Rock of Ages
Rock Of Ages tells the story of a small-town girl, a city boy, and a rock ‘n’ roll romance on the Sunset Strip. But when the bar where rock reigns supreme is set to be demolished, it’s up to these wannabe rockers and their band of friends to save the day — and the music. Can Drew, Sherri and the gang save the strip – and themselves – before it's too late? Rock Of Ages’ score features hit ’80s rock anthems and power ballads, from bands like Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, and more.
Lackland Performing Arts Center on the Centenary University campus
(715 Grand Ave., Hackettstown)
7/6 - 7/16
In New York
2) Galatea 2.0
GALATEA 2.0 is a modern speculation on the "Pygmalion" myth, a deconstruction of the muse/artist relationship, and an exploration of intimacy that merges Mrs. Patrick Campbell/George Bernard Shaw, found text, incel culture, lots of blue Gatorade, puppetry, plinths, and a very old Pekinese. The show chronicles Eliza, a sex worker hired by a disaffected young man to role play as a top of the line "love doll" when his own doll mysteriously breaks.
Brooklyn Art Haus (24 Marcy Avenue, Brooklyn)
7/6 - 7/23
Here is Rydell High’s senior class of 1959: duck-tailed, hot-rodding “Burger Palace Boys” and their gum-snapping, hip-shaking “Pink Ladies” in bobby sox and pedal pushers, evoking the look and sound of the 1950s in this rollicking musical. Head “greaser” Danny Zuko and new (good) girl Sandy Dumbrowski try to relive the high romance of their “Summer Nights” as the rest of the gang sings and dances its way through such songs as “Greased Lightnin’," “It's Raining on Prom Night," and “Born to Hand Jive.” An eight-year run on Broadway, two subsequent revivals, and innumerable school and community and regional productions place Grease among the world's most popular musicals.
Argyle Theatre (34 W. Main St., Babylon, NY)
7/6 - 8/27
4) I'm Gonna Marry You Tobey Maguire
To cope with the absence of her father, neglect of her mother, and ridicule by her classmates, eighth-grader Shelby Hinkley has put all of her time and energy into the only thing that matters in 2004: Spiderman. When leading a devout online fan club proves insufficient to her needs, Shelby decides to risk it all for love, kidnap famous actor Tobey Maguire and marry him in her basement. Her fantasies of happily ever after start to crumble as she realizes Tobey may not be the charismatic, heartthrob actor she thinks she knows. A Y2K farce, I’M GONNA MARRY YOU TOBEY MAGUIRE is a full-throttle explosion of our para-social relationships and the obsessions that detonate them.
Nancy Manocherian’s the cell theatre (338 West 23rd St.)
7/8 - 7/29
Opening Night 7/12
5) Malvolio
An irreverent sequel inspired by Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night
Richard Rodgers Amphitheater (Marcus Garvey Park, Harlem)
7/8 - 7/29
6) Scott Silven's At the Illusionist's Table
World-renowned Scottish illusionist, Scott Silven, created and hosts an evening of fine dining, whisky-tasting, and storytelling interwoven with mind-bending illusion and mystical mentalism.
The McKittrick Hotel (530 West 27th St.)
7/5 - 7/29
For more information or to purchase tickets, visit mckittrickhotel.com/events/at-the-illusionists-table
7) Try the Kingdom
In TRY FOR THE KINGDOM, three junkies living in an abandoned apartment in Brooklyn try to form a family to combat madness and violence. What ensues is a stylized romp through imagination and dreams.
The Vino Theater (274 Morgan Ave. Brooklyn)
7/6 -8/5
Opening Night 7/15
B) Run Extensions
8) Hadestown
Jewelle Blackman extends her run as Peresphone to 9/3
Tom Hewitt extends his run as Hades to 9/3
Following two intertwining love stories — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone — Hadestown invites audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers, and singers, Hadestown delivers a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience.
Walter Kerr Theatre (219 West 48th St.)
9) Helicline Fine Art Exhibition:
Antonio Petruccelli: Redisovering a Modernist
Extended to 9/6
