Cannabis! A Viper Vaudeville is a theatrical concert exploring the history of cannabis using music, dance, and spoken word grounded in the Hip Hop tradition of the remix and mashup. Inspired by Martin A. Lee’s book Smoke Signals: A Social History of Marijuana, CANNABIS! A VIPER VAUDEVILLE weaves the music of icons such as Bob Marley with the stories of grassroots activists Dennis Perron and Brownie Mary with personal narratives. From Congo Square to the speakeasies of the jazz age, from the revolutionary happenings of the ’60s to the AIDS activism of the San Francisco buyers club, our time traveling tale invokes a tradition of rebel spaces -- sites of music, healing, and resistance.

The Elephant in the Room

The Final Veil

THE FINAL VEIL is a unique blend of theater, opera and dance. It tells the true story of Franceska Mann, a Polish-Jewish dancer who demonstrated resistance and strength amid the horrors of the Holocaust. When Mann was brought to Auschwitz, she and the other arrivals were sent to the gas chambers and told to remove their clothing. According to eyewitnesses, Franceska performed a distracting striptease, after which she managed to grab a gun, shoot, and fatally wound one SS Guard and injure a second, before her own subsequent death. Her actions in Auschwitz tell the story of a woman desperate to spare her life and others, using the tools she gathered as a ballerina in occupied Poland.

1) AMERICAN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA RETURNS  TO CARNEGIE HALL WITH THE U.S. PREMIERE OF SERGEI TANEYEV’S  AT THE READING OF A PSALM ON FRIDAY, JULY 15, 2022

Soprano Mané Galoyan, Mezzo-soprano Eve Gigliotti,  Tenor Terrence Chin-Loy and Bass Christian Zaremba are Soloists

The American Symphony Orchestra completes its 60^th anniversary season on Friday, July 15, 2022 at 8 PM. The program, part of the Orchestra’s Vanguard Series and presented in a special collaboration with the Bard Music Festival, is conducted by Music Director Leon Botstein and features the U.S. premiere of Sergei Taneyev’s final work, At the Reading of a Psalm. Conceived as a massive statement of Russian Orthodox faith at the onset of WWI, this large-scale cantata for full orchestra, double chorus, and vocal soloists showcases the dramatic effect of Taneyev’s contrapuntal mastery. The concert, initially scheduled for January 28, was postponed due to the Omicron variant.

All of the singers are Metropolitan Opera artists: soprano Mané Galoyan debuted at the Met as Prilepa/Chlöe in Pique Dame; mezzo-soprano Eve Gigliotti, whose voice has been described as “powerful and agile” (The New York Times), sings this season in The Rake’s Progress and Elektra; tenor Terrence Chin-Loy debuted in the fall as Adult William in Terence Blanchard’s Fire Shut up in My Bones; and bass Christian Zaremba has sung the roles of Lesbo in Agrippina and Angelotti in Tosca at the Met.

A whirlwind is a phenomenon in the desert caused by the air coming from the mountains to the desert plain in different directions. “Whirlwind” explores trance, rhythmic breathing, sound, and spiral motion that the choreographer experienced on her journey through the Silk Road. Some of the movement ideas came from her visit to XingJiang and her encounter with Uyghur dance.

South Street Seaport Museum announces “Vinyasa on a Vessel,” a free Vinyasa-based Yoga course on the 1885 tall ship Wavertree on Sunday, July 17, 2022 at 9:00am at Pier 16 (Fulton and South Streets). The 60-minute session will take place on the deck of Wavertree, followed by a tour of the historic vessel for interested participants. Space is limited to 15 participants. Ages 12 and up. Vinyasa links movement and breath to attain balance in the mind and body. Commonly referred to as “flow yoga,” this technique is meant to break away from “fixed form” yoga styles, offering a variety of movements and postures. Vinyasa emphasizes transitions rather than holding traditional poses, offering cardiovascular benefits to yoga students.

Led by Zak Risinger, Seaport Museum’s Manager of Engagement and Public Programs, the session is a challenge for all participants, offering a peaceful and mindful start on Sunday morning. The session is also peppered with information about Wavertree itself.
