5) The Prep Faculty & Students Join Bobby Cronin and Broadway Stars for

‘A Little Bit of Bobby’ Concert

Bobby Cronin and Friends on November 8, 7:00pm at Green Room 42

Award-winning composer and writer Bobby Cronin’s music will be celebrated by The Prep students and Broadway stars at a concert containing songs from CONCRETE JUNGLE, MARY AND MAX THE MUSICAL and music from RAIN AND ZOE SAVE THE WORLD. The event is at GreenRoom42 on Monday, November 8 at 7:00pm.

Joining Bobby will be Tony winner Shuler Hensley - The Music Man, Oklahoma; Telly Leung - Aladdin, Allegiance; Kate Rockwell - Mean Girls, Rock of Ages; Jelani Remy - Ain't Too Proud, The Lion King; Angela Birchett - The Color Purple; Devin Ilaw - Les Miserables, Miss Saigon; Lauren Elder - Mary and Max, Side Show; Deon Oliverio - Pose; Leana Rae Concepcion - Radio City Christmas; and Brooklyn Norstedt - Psykidz.

Concrete Jungle: Music, book, and lyrics by Bobby Cronin with additional material by Crystal Skillman. This musical romantic comedy is a modern take on Cyrano and exemplifies the complexities people find themselves in when dealing with career, diversity, technology, dreams and ambition, all while trying to be true to yourself while looking for love in the big city. The show is a heartfelt, relevant, and contemporary new American musical that celebrates love, explores gender identity, and challenges the idea of what it takes to be successful in this dizzying digital world.

Mary and Max the Musical: Music and lyrics by Bobby Cronin, book by Crystal Skillman. Adapted from the beloved 2011 Australian claymation film by Academy Award-winner Adam Elliot, Mary and Max melds a modern struggle between father and daughter with the story of two "weird and different" souls on two widely separated continents who, through the power of letter writing, become best friends. As the two worlds intertwine, the underlying story of Mary and Max is emotionally resonant and highly theatrical while exploring the ways we cope with life and with death.

Rain and Zoe Save the World: Authored by Crystal Skillman featuring music by Bobby Cronin.  Two teenagers tackle twin disasters, climate change and coming of age, when they embark on an impulsive motorcycle journey to join a group of oil protesters on the East Coast. As they follow a major pipeline across the country, what began as two young environmentalists' longing to belong to something greater than themselves gives way to Rain and Zoe discovering that the true danger in this world might just be growing up. https://www.rainandzoe.com/

Tickets for A Little Bit of Bobby start at $29 and can be purchased at https://thegreenroom42.venuetix.com/show/details/WyW9lXd4OWyjTPfkVH3G/1636416000000

Music composed by Brooks Williams & Beo Morales. Having brought the legacy of pioneering dancer, Loie Fuller into the 21st century, she currently focuses on using visual-kinetic narratives to connect choreography and climate science.

12) SECOND STAGE THEATER

Announces Series of Social Justice Initiatives

In Conjunction with Broadway Production of

Lynn Nottage’s

CLYDE’S

Program Seeks to Raise Awareness About Individuals Who Are

Formerly Incarcerated and Those Impacted by the Justice System

Second Stage Theater (Carole Rothman, President and Artistic Director; Khady Kamara, Executive Director) has announced a series of social justice initiatives centered around the upcoming Broadway production of Lynn Nottage’s play, Clyde’s, directed by Kate Whoriskey.  A funny, moving, and inspiring new play, Clyde’s centers around the lives of four formerly incarcerated kitchen staff working at a sandwich shop and looking to reclaim their lives.

With a mission to spotlight the issues faced by returning citizens and those impacted by the justice system, the initiatives include:

  • Paid apprenticeship program with Second Stage Theater for justice system-impacted youth
  • Weekly talkbacks and discussions hosted by advocates and service providers in the social justice field
  • Art exhibit at the Hayes Theater featuring works by people impacted by the justice system
  • Final dress rehearsal fundraiser for partnering organizations
  • Virtual access to Clyde’s for four national organizations run by and for returning citizens and people who are incarcerated
  • Job Fair aimed at connecting justice system-impacted individuals with job opportunities and training
  • Subsidized tickets for formerly incarcerated individuals and their families

“At its best, theater has the power to inspire change and that is what we are aiming to do with these special programs surrounding Lynn Nottage’s wonderful new play, Clyde’s,” said Khady Kamara, Executive Director of Second Stage Theater. “With deep thanks to our partners at Art for Justice Fund, Second Stage is proud to launch this robust slate of initiatives to raise awareness, provide paths to employment opportunities for those impacted by the justice system, and hopefully to generate change within ourselves, our staff, and the theater community as a whole.”

“All of us at Art for Justice are excited to support Second Stage Theater and Lynn Nottage around the upcoming production of Clyde’s. People returning home from prison face many challenges and Lynn’s play shines a needed light on the importance of ‘fair chance’ employment opportunities to empower people to rebuild their lives.  Art creates empathy and I’m grateful Lynn’s work will help to transform the criminal legal system,” said Agnes Gund, Founder of Art for Justice Fund.

More detailed information on the programs can be found below:

CLYDE’S In Prisons

Second Stage is working to find ways to share this production and story with currently incarcerated individuals. As a first step, the Prison Creative Arts Project in Michigan is using CLYDE’S as part of their fall 2021 curriculum. Second Stage is working with the Art for Justice Fund to explore possibilities for a streaming presentation that could be seen by some of their other grantee partners who work with formerly incarcerated communities.

Job Fair

Second Stage will host a Job Fair that will focus on returning citizens, with the aim to connect them with job opportunities, training, and other career resources. Second Stage is working with Youth Justice Network and Hour Children to coordinate with fellow theaters, hotels, restaurants, and other businesses in Times Square that have “fair chance” hiring programs. Second Stage is also seeking partners to provide supportive services to job fair attendees including resume writing and interview prep. This Job Fair is currently scheduled to begin in January 2022.

15) ZviDance Presents
the Stage Premiere of
The Art of Fugue
at New York Live Arts
November 11-13, 2021

ZviDance (Zvi Gotheiner, Choreographer and Artistic Director) presents The Art of Fugue, an evening-length, multimedia dance performance collaboration between Zvi Gotheiner, composer Scott Killian, lighting designer Mark London, media designer Joshua Higgason, and eight dancers. Johann Sebastian Bach’s “The Art of Fugue” is a point of departure for Gotheiner's choreographic exploration, which highlights the individual contribution of each of his creative team members. In music, a fugue is a contrapuntal composition in which a short melody is introduced by one voice and successively taken up by others; Gotheiner introduces this compositional structure as a metaphor to portray a non-hierarchical society. Killian integrates electronic original music with Bach, anchoring the work in contemporary culture. Higgason’s live and pre-recorded video projection adds an additional “voice” to the complexity of the canonic composition. The Art of the Fugue will have a live staged premiere on November 11-13, 2021 (Thu and Fri at 7:30pm, Sat at 2pm and 7:30pm) at at New York Live Arts, 219 W 19th St., New York, NY. Tickets are $25 general admission and $18 for students and senior and are available for purchase at newyorklivearts.org/event/zvidance-the-art-of-fugue/
