Cyberbabies:
A Musical.Dot Comedy
Comunity Space/Theater for a New City
155 First Ave.
(between 9th and 10th Sts.)
New York, NY

May 31-June 17, 2018 - 12 Performances

Cyberbabies: A Musical Dot.Comedy, a world premiere musical be staged at the Community Space at Theater for the New City155 First Avenue (bet. 9th and 10th Streets), New York, NY 10003 from May 31-June 17, 2018.

Manhattan at the turn of the Millennium—it’s the red-hot center of the exploding new phenomenon of the Internet. Brash young Web pioneers vie to stake their claim. With the sudden new wealth and lavish launch parties, it’s the Great Gatsby on steroids. You might think of it as a La La Land for New York. It’s got great characters, vivacious original songs and blazing choreography. Most of the cast is made up of, appropriately, Millennials, so the whole project has a youthful, Spring Awakening zing.  Its highly hummable numbers include “Manhattanite In The Manhattan Night,” “Virtual Virgins” and “Eaten By the Internet.”

Twelve performances will be staged from May 31-June 17 on the following schedule: Thursday-Saturday at 8pm & Sunday at 3pm.

Runtime is two hours with one 10-minute intermission.

The Maid's Tragedy
Access Theater
380 Broadway
New York, NY

A new production of Beaumont & Fletcher’s The Maid’s Tragedy will be presented at Off-Broadway’s Access Theater (380 Broadway). Set in present day Hollywood, this production is presented by Pocket Universe, the company behind last summer’s Julius Caesar set in an all girls’ high-school. Conceived by Alyssa May Gold (Arcadia on Broadway, Julius Caesar) and directed by Lucy Gram, the Jacobean revenge drama centers on the hero Melantius, who must challenge the monarchy and reclaim the family’s honor due to despicable conduct by the King.

Traditionally portrayed as a male soldier returning home from war, Melantius discovers the King has arranged a marriage between his social-climbing sister Evadne and his best friend Amintor – a power move to protect the King’s personal interests, which in hand also destroys Amintor’s engagement to his long-time love, Aspatia. Pocket Universe’s production reimagines the tragedy as a story of two sisters in present-day Hollywood – a now-female Melantius, film producer, and Evadne, actress – whose different attitudes about sex, fame, and honor collide in the wake of their studio-king’s misconduct. Careers are jeopardized and lives are threatened, as everyone contends with one question: when the person in power robs you of yours, how far will you go to get it back?

The Off-Broadway production will run from June 13 to June 30, 2018 with opening night set for Friday, June 15.

It signals a return to the company’s origins as it confidently combines two circus traditions – acrobatic performance and the art of clowning.

Mauritania's defining artist on the international stage, Noura Mint Seymali draws deep on her West African and Maghreb roots to carry her family’s Moorish griot tradition into the 21st century. France Rocks Festival: Piers Faccini
The English-born, France-based singer-songwriter Piers Faccini, who creates “captivating, quietly insistent” music (Wall Street Journal) in the vein of Nick Drake infused with a global outlook, brings his newest project to the Atrium as part of the France Rocks Festival. Inspired by the rich medieval history of his Mediterranean surroundings, I Dreamed an Island is a fascinating collection of songs drawing on Western, Arabic, and Byzantine influences. Imagining how a Provençal madrigal might sound closer to the mode of an Arabic makan, or how words in English could be put to melodies sung with microtones of a Turkish taqsim, Faccini crosses folk and world music genres, transforming John Martyn into Ali Farka Touré, Pentangle into a Tunisian wedding band, and a Sicilian ciaccona into a Tuareg desert riff.

OPERA SARATOGA ANNOUNCES

FREE REFUGEE VOICES PROGRAMS TO COMPLEMENT NEW PRODUCTION OF MENOTTI'S

PULTIZER PRIZE WINNING OPERA
THE CONSUL

Opera Saratoga's Artistic and General Director Lawrence Edelson recently announced Refugee Voices, two special events to complement the company's new production of The Consul by Gian Carlo Menotti.

When The Consul originally premiered on Broadway in 1950, the New York Times hailed it as "an opera of eloquence, momentousness, and intensity of expression...written from the heart, with a blazing sincerity and a passion of human understanding... It is torn out of the life of the present-day world, and poses an issue which mercilessly confronts humanity today." Almost 70 years later, Menotti's riveting opera still delivers a punch as powerful and timely as its subject matter - the struggle for freedom against oppression, and the maddening nature of unrelenting bureaucracy. Set in an unnamed European city, political dissident John Sorel is on the run from the secret police. After he escapes the country, his devoted wife Magda clashes with the bureaucracy at the Consulate while trying to obtain an exit visa for her family.

Opera Saratoga has a strong commitment to not only producing operas that are deeply relevant to local communities, but also to creating opportunities for the public to engage in meaningful dialogue around the themes explored in these productions. Leading up to and during the production, Opera Saratoga will offer free community engagement programs related to The Consul in both Albany and Saratoga Springs. Two free events are scheduled in Albany explore themes in The Consul through distinctly different lenses.

The first event, on Sunday, June 17th at 7:00pm at Picotte Recital Hall, Massry Center for the Arts, College of St. Rose (432 Western Avenue, Albany, NY), will be a free concert featuring music by refugee composers - artists who had to flee from their home countries due to religious or political persecution. This concert will also include short presentations by the singers on the context of each composer's journey from their homeland. Refugee composers highlighted on this free concert include Gaetano Donizetti, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Darius Milhaud, Paul Hindemith, Erich Korngold, Irving Berlin, Béla Bartók, and Kurt Weill. Advance online registration for this free event is highly recommended, at www.eventbrite.com/e/refugee-voices-tickets-46051572493

The second event, on Monday, July 2nd at 7:00pm in the Community Hall at Albany Unitarian Universalist (405 Washington Avenue, Albany, NY) will be a free symposium on the contemporary immigrant and refugee experience. This event will bring together a group of people from different countries who have made their homes in the Capital Region to share their journeys, including Rifat Filkins (Pakistan), Francis Sengabo(Rwanda), Muthana Alkhazraji (Iraq), Ali Amjadi (Sudan), and Lily Htoo (Mammary, via Thailand). The discussion will shed light on the difference between the experience of immigrants versus those who are specifically refugees, and Albany's role as a Sanctuary City. Presented in partnership with RISSE (Refugee and Immigrant Support Services of Emmaus), the forum will be moderated by Seth Leech, a partner with Whiteman Osterman & Hanna, whose primary practice area is immigration law including family-based immigration and asylum. Advance online registration for this free event is also highly recommended, at www.eventbrite.com/e/refugee-voices-a-symposium-tickets-46740449944

In Saratoga Springs, prior to each performance of The Consul (July 7th, 9th, and 15that The Spa Little Theatre in Spa State Park), Artistic and General Director Lawrence Edelson will also moderate a series of "Behind the Spotlight" events, which are free to all ticket holders for each performance. These discussions will feature artists involved in the creation of the new production, providing insight into the creative decisions that were informed by both the historical context of the opera, and current events. The new production is directed by Edelson, and conducted by Andrew Bisantz. The production features two distinguished alumni of Opera Saratoga's Young Artist Program who have become fast-rising stars: soprano Meghan Kasanders, and mezzo soprano Jennifer Panara. Critically acclaimed artists making their debuts with Opera Saratoga in this production include mezzo soprano Deborah Nansteel, tenorTyler Nelson, and baritone Wes Mason.

LITTLE ROCK
BEGINS OFF-BROADWAY

LIMITED ENGAGEMENT CONTINUES THROUGH SEPTEMBER 8, 2018
AT THE SHEEN CENTER FOR THOUGHT & CULTURE

OPENING NIGHT IS JUNE 14, 2018.

The New York premiere of the new play Little Rock  began June 8, 2018, for a limited engagement through September 8, 2018 at The Sheen Center for Thought & Culture (18 Bleecker Street).  Opening Night is Thursday, June 14, 2018 at 7:00PM

History called it heroism. They called it high school.  Little Rock tells the riveting true story of The Little Rock Nine, the first black students to attend their city’s formerly segregated Little Rock Central High School three years after the Brown vs. Board of Education Supreme Court decision ruled separating students based on race was unconstitutional. What began as their quest for a better education soon became a national crisis, igniting the passions of a divided country and sparking a historic fight for justice in the Jim Crow south. On the cusp of the Civil Rights movement, a changing world watched as these nine children from Arkansas battled for their rights, armed with only a notebook and pencil. At once harrowing and hopeful, Little Rock brings urgently to life The Nine’s untold personal stories of challenge and resilience, conjuring memories of America not so long ago. From writer and director Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj, this deeply moving play honors the bravery of these young heroes and asks audiences: Would you have had the courage?   “The task that remains is to embrace our interdependence - to see ourselves reflected in every other human being and to respect and honor our differences.” -Dr. Melba Pattillo Beals.  “If we have honestly acknowledged our painful but shared past, then we can have reconciliation.”-Elizabeth Eckford

Little Rock  plays the following performance schedule:  Tuesdays - Thursdays at 7:30PM, Fridays at 8:00PM, Saturdays at 3:00PM & 8:00PM, and Sundays at 3:00PM & 7:30PM. Please note:  There are special added performances on Monday, July 2 at 7:30PM.  There will be no performances on Wednesday, Jully4.

Tickets for Little Rock, NOW ON SALE are priced from $39 - $99, with Premium Seats priced at $119 – $125, and Student Tickets at $25, plus $2 facility fee & $6 convenience fee per ticket.  Tickets may be purchased online at www.littlerockplay.com or at The Sheen Center Box Office (18 Bleecker Street, Monday – Friday 11:00AM – 5:00PM, and one hour prior to every performance), or by calling the Box Office at (212) 925-2812.  All Group sales orders must be submitted directly through The Sheen Center Box Office. No paper orders will be accepted for Little Rock; only orders placed via email through boxoffice@sheencenter.org will be considered. WORLD PREMIERE!

THE YORK THEATRE COMPANY
IN ASSOCIATION WITH DOCUMENTARY ARTS
PRESENTS
AKIŃ BABATUNDÉ IN
LONESOME BLUES

A NEW MUSICAL BY ALAN GOVENAR AND AKIŃ BABATUNDÉ
DIRECTED BY KATHERINE OWENS

PERFORMANCES BEGIN TUESDAY, JUNE 12, 2018
FOR A LIMITED ENGAGEMENT THROUGH JULY 1, 2018
AT THE YORK THEATRE COMPANY AT SAINT PETER’S

OPENING NIGHT IS SET FOR TUESDAY, JUNE 19, 2018 AT 6:45M

The York Theatre Company (James Morgan, Producing Artistic Director; Evans Haile, Executive Director), dedicated to the development of new musicals and the preservation of musical gems from the past, in association with Documentary Arts, presents the world premiere of the new musical Lonesome Blues, based on the true story of legendary bluesman Blind Lemon Jefferson, created by Alan Govenar (Texas in Paris) and Akiń Babatundé (Blind Lemon Blues), directed by Katherine Owens(How Is It That We Live or Shakey Jake + Alice), performed by Akiń Babatundé with David Weiss on guitar.  Performances are set to begin Tuesday, June 12, 2018 for a three-week limited engagement through Sunday afternoon, July 1, 2018 at The York Theatre Company at Saint Peter’s (entrance on East 54th Street, just east of Lexington Avenue). Opening Night is set for Tuesday evening, June 19, 2018 at 6:45 p.m.

The world premiere musical Lonesome Blues is the true story of the legendary bluesman Blind Lemon Jefferson: born blind, but ultimately able to express his deepest emotions through music.  Discovered on a street corner in the Deep Ellum section of Dallas, Texas in 1925, Jefferson made more than 80 records over the next four years, becoming one the most prolific and influential performers of his generation and propelling the growth of rhythm and blues, soul, doo-wop, rap, and hip-hop.  Building on the success of their earlier musical Blind Lemon Blues, presented by the York in 2007 and 2009, Alan Govenar and Akiń Babatundé have used new research to probe deeper into the life and psyche of Blind Lemon Jefferson. In Lonesome Blues, Babatundé plays more than ten different roles, channeling the spirits of men and women alike, in a journey that is at once evocative, troubling, and transformative.  Songs and monologues bring to life the voice of Blind Lemon Jefferson, his community, and his musical contemporaries, including Blind Willie Johnson, Lillian Glinn, Hattie Hudson, Bobbie Cadillac, and Lead Belly—all coming together in Jefferson's mind on the day of his death, December 19, 1929, in Chicago.

Lonesome Blues will play the following performance schedule:  Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m., Thursdays at 2:30 p.m.* & 7:00 p.m., Fridays at 8:00 p.m., Saturdays at 2:30 p.m.* & 8:00 p.m., and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. (*Audience discussion follow the matinee performance.)
