Me & Mom - New York At Its Core is a relatively new permanent exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York. It has been open just under a year and a half. The exhibit represents 400 years of New York history. The exhibit is divided into several different galleries. The main gallery is divided into sections each section represents about a ten or twenty year period and revolves around a particular theme, for instance immigration, mass transit, or the new gilded age. Each section contains numerous pictures, articles and artifacts related to the theme. Here we will talk about some of them, but these are only a small fraction of the many many items that are on display. There is a shoe that was part of Mrs. Potts' costume in the Disney musical Beauty and the Beast. There are the bronzed tap shoes of Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. There is poster of former New York Mayor, Fiorello La Guardia. There is a Donna Karan clad Barbie. There is a model of the Empire State Building. Another gallery focuses on New York as a port city and includes such artifacts as a tea set, a ship model and the New Colussus in Emma Lazarus' own handwriting. There is also a gallery which includes a Future City Lab where you can build your own city of the future. All in all, if you want to learn about New York history in a fun way, you should really visit The New York At Its Core exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York.
And that's our view. Tune in tomorrow for Theater Thursday.
