Britney Coleman (Understudy for the role of Betty Schaeffer  in the Broadway revival of Sunset Boulevard), Ashley Perez Flanagan (Understudy for the roles of Sonya, Mary, Opera Singer and Servant in the Broadway production of Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812), Linedy Genao (Understudy for the role of Gloria Estefan in the Broadway production of On Your Feet!); Destinee Rea (Standby for the roles of Suzanne, Georgette, Gina, Philomene, Amandine, Sylvia and Collignon’s Mother in the Broadway production of Amelie, A New Musical); Lianah Sta. Ana(Alternate for the role of Kim in the Broadway revival of Miss Saigon), Antoine L. Smith (Understudy for the role of John in the Broadway revival of Miss Saigon), Sean Thompson (Understudy for the role of Joe Gillis in the Broadway revival of Sunset Boulevard) and Mckayla Twiggs(Standby for the roles of Little Anastasia and Alexei Romanov in the Broadway production of Anastasia). Musical Director/Accompanist for the evening will be Eugene Gwozdz.

At This Performance… debuted in October 2003 and to date has showcased the talents of 855 Standbys, Understudies and Alternates who have covered 3963 roles in 465 Broadway and Off-Broadway productions.

Funtivity Friday - Lollipop Taste Testing

Theater Thursday - Waitress, Pippin, and Ring Twice for Miranda

What: Waitress

Where: Brooks Atkinson Theatre

Who: Teens and Up

Me - Waitress was amazing! Everything about it is great. The story is interesting. The acting is awesome. Even though most of the cast has already changed from the original cast, it's still a great show. We saw it when Jesse Mueller still played the lead role of Jenna. However, she recently left the show. Sarah Barielle's, who wrote the songs, will soon be taking over temporarily. That should be interesting. One original cast member still in the show is Christopher Fitzgerald. He plays Ogie. There is this one number that he does called Never Ever Getting Rid of Me. It is the funniest number ever. It is hilarious! Over all, I love the songs. They are wonderful! I go around all the time singing them. It's practically all I ever want to listen to. I like all the songs, and I can't pick a favorite although there are some I like better than others. The show has a lot of funny parts. It is hilarious. They actually sell real pies at the theater. They are very small and cost a lot. However, they smell and taste delicious. The whole theater smells like apple pie. There is actually an oven in the lobby where they bake a pie, but they don't sell that one. They sell ones that are ready made. I love all the interesting pies that the character of Jenna makes up in the show. You can actually get a recipe book of those pies, but I don't know if they sell it at the theater or not. It is the best show ever, and I would really highly recommend you go see it!

Who: Teens and Up

Me - I enjoyed Pippin. The story was very different than anything I have seen before. It was about a guy who was trying to find his purpose in life, and in the process he tried all these different things. It was good and entertaining.  It was a very funny show. The characters were unique in interesting ways. There was even a duck, but it wasn't a real duck. The acting was good. I liked the songs too. My favorite is Corner of the Sky. However, a lot of the songs are good. I had heard a lot of the songs before because my mom, and my dad, and my sister saw the show before even though I didn't. There were a lot of really cool circus parts in the show. They made the show more interesting. Even though they had all the circus elements they still had some dance in it too. The dance was nice. If you ever have the chance you should go see it, it's a good show.

Mom - Pippin is a great show. It is one of those rare shows where it is a toss up as to who enjoys it more the cast or the audience. It is full of interesting characters and delightful memorable songs. Probably the most famous song from the show is Corner of the Sky. However, the rest of the score is really great too. The current touring version of the show which recently played the State Theatre New Jersey in New Brunswick, New Jersey is based on the Broadway revival of the show. This version of the show played on Broadway from 2013 to 2015 and was nominated for ten Tonys and won four including Best Revival of a Musical. This version of the show had some small changes to the plot, but the biggest difference was the addition of circus elements to the show. The circus elements work well for the story and are very entertaining. They include acrobatics, balancing and even the character of a grandmother swinging on a trapeze. Having seen both the tour and the Broadway version of the show, I can definitely say, the tour is of equal caliber to the Broadway version. The cast is equally talented and equally suited to their roles. Over all, the show is equally as entertaining. It is just a blast of fun from beginning to end.

What: Ring Twice for Miranda

When: Now through April 16, 2017

Who: Recommended for Ages 16 and Up

Mom - If you are looking for a light happy show, this is not it. However, if you are fascinated by doomsday scenarios and what will happen if the world descends into chaos, you may enjoy it. The world of the show is ruled by a character named Sir whose house is haven from the hell that the outside world has become, and he gets to decide who stays and who goes. Miranda is the maid who keeps him entertained but not in the way you would think. Elliot is the butler, and when he is thrown out she goes with him. They'll have to try to survive on the mean streets or find a way to get back into Sir's house and his good graces. The show is well written and well acted and definitely not predictable. The interesting set makes good use of the small stage. If you are interested in a completely unique theatrical experience, you may want to give this show a try.

Where-To-Go Wednesday - Whitney Museum of American Art

We were given free tickets to The Whitney Museum for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Whitney Museum of American Art

Me -The Whitney Museum of American Art was enjoyable. We went on a Kid's Tour. It was fascinating.   We saw a stained glass window with a lot of symbols in it. There were these weird moving mannequins in bathing suits with virtual reality glasses on. There were these sculptures that looked like chairs. They also had a chair that looked like a piece of art but you could actually sit on it.  A lot of people could sit on it at once. The part of it that  looked soft was hard, and the part of  it that looked hard was really comfortable. There was a section with paintings that had legs attached to them holding them up. There were a bunch of banners hanging from the ceiling. In the stairwell there were these different kinds of mannequins. One was a giant baby. It was creepy. There was even art work outside and you could go outside on different floors of the museum. One of the outside exhibits was these giant plastic cubes. There was a lot of snow on the ground when we visited the museum, and it looked like the snow was in the cubes. You could also see your reflection in them. There were trees in one section but that was inside. I don't know what trees have to do with art  anyway. They were pretty and colorful though. There was an area called Open Studio where kids and the adults with them got to make art. There was a picture of bathtub by a window. There was this purple couch. There was another section were there were these tiles and sinks, and it looked like a bathroom. Over all, it was a really fun place.


Mom's view: There are lot of art museums in New York and some of them are not very family friendly. Some even have minimum age requirements. That is not the case for the Whitney Museum of American Art. The Whitney Museum of American Art  is extremely welcoming to families. In fact, they have events and activities for all ages including Strollers Tours, Kid's Tours and Open Studio time. Stroller tours are pretty self explanatory. Kid's Tours are for children ages 5 and up, and they are free with admission to the museum.  They are given about 3 times a day on Saturdays. However, you must sign up  in advance and only a limited amount of people are allowed on each tour so if you go to the museum and you are interested in that, you should sign up right away. If you think a kid's tour is going to be an exhausting trek through the museum with a bunch of bored little kids, don't worry the tours are nothing like that. The tours are short and very interactive. They involve visits to only two different works of art. I am not sure if they are always the same two works of art or this varies, however. The two  art works are discussed in a fun way for kids where the kids are asked a lot of questions and able to give their opinions a lot. Also, kids get to search for things in the artwork and even get to do a little drawing of their own. Open studio is also on Saturdays but does not require a ticket or registration. It gives kids the opportunity to create their own works of art related to a particular work of art that is currently in the museum. Each week a different work of art is chosen for inspiration. Open Studio runs from 10:30 AM to 3:00 PM. If you are not a kid and you do not have a kid and you are afraid that with all this family friendliness, the Whitney must be a noisy, crazy place with kids running all over. Don't be. It is actually pretty quiet and peaceful. Since the museum is so welcoming to kids, they are kept busy, happy and entertained  there. Therefore, they have no reason to run wild and annoy other museum guests and that makes the Whitney Museum of American Art a great place to visit for everyone.

Tips for Tuesday - Books: Surprises According to Humphrey and Beastia

Me - Today I am recommending Surprises According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney. This is a book about Humphrey the classroom hamsters. There are a whole series of books about Humphrey. These books are good for kids who are not just starting to read chapter books but a little bit beyond that. The books are really funny. They are told from the hamsters point of view, and the hamster has human emotions. Kids who like funny books and books about animals would enjoy these books.

Mom - Today I am recommending Beastia by Zoe Cruz. With a new version of Beauty and the Beast currently in movie theaters, this book is very timely. It puts a unique spin on the old familiar Beauty and the Beast story. Here the beast character is a female. Rebekah Austin was not the nicest girl particularly to Jo-Ann who used to be her friend and suddenly wasn't good enough for her anymore. Then, Rebekah's Dad dies, and she gets kidnapped and deformed by a mad man, and her life turns upside down. This book with its fast moving short chapters is a really quick read. It should be required reading for all teenage girls (or any girls) who think that all they'll ever need to get by is their looks, and therefore how they treat other people doesn't matter.

Me - My topic for this month is  At This Performance Broadway Understudy Concerts. These concerts are really cool. The performers are really good. I would be excited to see any of the performers I've seen in a Broadway understudy concert in a show. They are really talented. The most recent At This Performance concert was Monday March 20, 2017. Mom- My topic this month is Church & State. Church & State is currently playing at New World Stages, 340 W. 50th St. New York, NY. Like the current Keen Company production of When It's You, Church & State also deals with the topic of gun violence. However, unlike When It's You which overall is more of a serious drama, Church & State is billed as a comedy. A lot of it is actually very funny. The characters mainly a senator, his wife,  and his campaign manager (can be very funny and there are a lot of funny lines. The story involves a senator running for re-election who has a crisis of faith and isn't sure whether to believe in God anymore when a school shooting occurs in his town. It is well written and well acted by the talented  four person cast. In addition to the characters mentioned previously there are also a bunch of smaller roles played by the same actor. It is not a show for children due to the subject matter. However, if you are an adult and you appreciate a show that not only entertains but makes you think, this show is a good choice.

STORY: Louis (Peyton Crim), has won a sweepstakes, and quits his job as washroom attendant at the Club Petite. He is in love with the club’s singer May (Jennifer Evans), but she is in love with Alex (Patrick Oliver Jones) who is unhappily married. Alex is the brother of her friend Alice (Katherine McLaughlin), who is in love with Harry (Tim McGarrigal). And Vi (Lilly Tobin) the club’s cigarette girl is in love with Louis. The Club’s owner, Kelly (Richard Rowan) hires Charlie (Ernie Pruneda), to replace Louis. Charlie helps Louis slip Alex a Mickey Finn so that he can make some headway with May. But Louis drinks it instead. With us so far? Louis dreams he is King Louis XV, that May is Madame du Barry, and that everyone else is a part of his Court except Alex who is a disloyal peasant. Several scenes and nine songs later, Louis wakes up and realizes that Alex is the man for May and goes back to being a washroom attendant. Take Home a Tree Philly

This spring, there are four chances for Philadelphians to pick up a yard tree that they can enjoy for years to come. The trees are free to Philadelphia residents courtesy of Fairmount Park Conservancy, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, and program sponsor TD Bank.  The TreePhilly program is offering 12 different trees to choose from, ranging from large shade trees like Red Oak to smaller fruit trees like Sweet Cherry. Former Vice President Joe Biden, Pulitzer Prize-winning author David McCullough, and best-selling author, journalist, and political commentator Cokie Roberts have joined the roster of speakers for the Museum of the American Revolution’s grand opening ceremony on Wednesday, April 19. The date marks the 242nd anniversary of the “shot heard ‘round the world” that ignited the Revolutionary War in 1775.

The opening events will begin at 8 a.m. with a program that stretches from Washington Square to Independence Hall, and culminates on the plaza in front of the Museum, highlighting the rich Revolutionary history of Philadelphia and engaging as many people as possible.

The official dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Museum’s outdoor plaza. In addition to Biden, McCullough and Roberts, the ceremony also will include addresses by Dr. Vincent Brown, Charles Warren Professor of American History and Professor of African and African American Studies at Harvard University; Ray Halbritter, Oneida Nation Representative and CEO of Indian Nation Enterprises, and a Museum Board Member; and Colonel John E. Bircher III,representing the Military Order of the Purple Heart.

Musical guests will include the Philadelphia Boys Choir and a brass quintet from the Curtis Institute of Music. Sydney James Harcourt from the original cast of the Broadway phenomenon “Hamilton” will perform songs from the show.

A lesbian woman must come to terms with her partner’s transition in ROTTERDAM. Playwright Matthew Wilkinson returns to 59E59 Theaters with MY EYES WENT DARK, the searing story of a man who exacts his own revenge after losing his family in a plane crash. A broken down train forces a couple on a first date to communicate without their WiFi enabled devices in UNDERGROUND.

Brooklyn, NY-- Doug Varone and Dancers return to BAM to celebrate 30 years of visionary work with three dances representing the past, present, and future of the company. The program comprises a revival of the Philip Glass-scored Possession (1994) and the New York premieres of ReComposed (2015) and Varone's latest work, Folded (2016). 

Possession, inspired by A.S. Byatt's century-spanning novel of the same name, is set to Glass' beautiful Concerto for Violin and Orchestra. Eight dancers, in duets, explore the facets of relationships, as the emotional and physical balance of the work shifts between each pair. ReComposed is a whirlwind of color and careening movement, inspired by the pastel paintings of abstract expressionist Joan Mitchell and set to Michael Gordon's propulsive Dystopia. Million Dollar Quartet with book by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux, original concept by Mr. Mutrux, inspired by Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins, performances are set to begin Wednesday, March 29, 2017, for a limited run through Sunday, April 23, 2017 at Paper Mill Playhouse (22 Brookside Drive) in Millburn, NJ.  Million Dollar Quartet  will be performed at Paper Mill Playhouse eight times a week, Wednesday through Sunday. Performance schedule: Wednesday at 7:30pm, Thursday at 1:30pm and 7:30pm, Friday at 8:00pm, Saturday at 1:30pm and 8:00pm and Sunday at 1:30pm and 7:00pm. Tickets are on sale now starting at $32.
