Mom's view: The Art and Whimsy of Mo Willems exhibit currently on display at the New York Historical Society covers the author's entire career from his early days as a writer and animator on Sesame Street through the writing and illustrating of his own books. All of Willems most popular series are represented here including the Pigeon books, the Knuffle Bunny books, and the Elephant and Piggy books as well as other Willems books some of which might not be as well known. This exhibit truly has something for everyone. Young children will enjoy listening to Mo Willems books in a replica of the bus from The Pigeon Wants to Drive the Bus book. Slightly older children may enjoy looking at the books themselves and looking at all the fun art work that is part of the exhibit especially the artwork they remember from the familiar books. Tweens, teens and adults will enjoy the interactive aspect of the exhibit where they can walk around and listen to different audio tracks that correspond to the different areas of the exhibit to learn more about Mo Willems and his books. The audio devices are free to borrow. If you and/or your children love Mo Willems or even if you just love fun books featuring whimsical characters you will love this exhibit. For more about the exhibit or to find out about special events that will be held as part of the exhibit including appearances by Mo Willems himself go to http://nyhistory.org/exhibitions/art-and-whimsy-mo-willems.

What: Tuck Everlasting

Where: Broadhurst Theatre
             235 W. 44th St.
             New York, NY

Who: Tweens and up
Mom's view: Tuck Everlasting is a fun fanciful musical about a family that has discovered the secret to immortality and the girl who discovers their secret. The show is based on the classic book by Natalie Babbitt. Whether you have read the book or not if you like a mostly upbeat show with some good songs, you will enjoy this show. The show is loaded with talented performers from newcomer, Sarah Charles Lewis as the spunky Winnie Foster to seasoned veterans like Carolee Carmello as Mae Tuck and Terence Mann as The Man in the Yellow Suit. There are some parts of the story that may not be suitable for young children including a girl being carried off against her will and a man being knocked out and possibly killed. However, older children would probably enjoy this show. If you have read the book do not expect the show to be an exact replica of it. However, the changes that have been made are not so drastic as to take away from the enjoyment of the story. For more about the show or to find how to order tickets, go to www.tuckeverlastingmusical.com, and and do it quickly because unfortunately, the show will be closing this Sunday May 29, 2016.
