The Qingming Festival (???), also known as Ancestors’ Day, is a traditional Chinese festival when families gather together to remember loved ones and celebrate the arrival of spring. In honor of the special exhibition Chinese American: Exclusion/Inclusion, the New-York Historical Society invites families to create and decorate their very own Qingming Festival kite and hear the story of a master kite maker in Chinatown.

Qingming Macy’s Sunday Story Time
Sunday, April 5, 11:30am and 2pm
In Henry and the Kite Dragon, written by Bruce Edward Hall and illustrated by William Low, pesky pigeons are getting in the way of ornate Chinese kites in the skies over Chinatown. Will a master kite maker save the day by fashioning a giant Dragon kite to chase the pigeons away?

Qingming Kite Making
Sunday, April 5, 1–3 pm
One of the most popular traditions of the Qingming Festival is for families to fly kites together. Come decorate and build a personalized kite to take home and fly!

Ancient Chinese Arts Today: Paper Making
Sunday, April 12
Session 1, from 11am–1pm, for children ages 5–10
Session 2, from 2–4pm, for children ages 10 – 14
$20 per person ($15 per Member)
Families will explore, experiment, and discover the possibilities of creating their own unique paper with award-winning papermaker Mary Sullivan. Paper, in its many forms, is the material most commonly used to document who we are, as shown in the exhibition Chinese American: Exclusion/Inclusion. Making paper is an age-old process and materials that hold special meaning can be embedded in the paper and added to its surface, creating wonderful stories of personal interest. Kids and their parents can bring in stamps, dried flowers, string, paper clippings, letters, or other small items to add to paper as it is made to personalize their work.

The Pinkertonian Mystery
Sundays, April 12 and April 26, 3-5 pm
For children and adults ages 8 and up; $35 per person.
Live In Theater debuts their very latest immersive and interactive mystery theater experience especially for families at the New-York Historical Society! In this premiere production, families will travel throughout the Museum galleries and interact with actors in The Pinkertonian Mystery to solve a crime inspired by the fictionalized criminal mastermind known only as El Diablo and the real-life Pinkerton National Detective Agency established in 1850.

Ancient Chinese Arts Today: Calligraphy
Sunday, April 19, 2-3pm
Ages 5 and up; $15 (members $10).
From ancient pictographs to modern ideographs, Chinese characters have been around for over 6,000 years and the writing of them has long been considered a discipline as well as an art. In this workshop, families will have the opportunity to see the intricacies of Chinese calligraphy demonstrated up-close by an instructor from the New York Chinese Cultural Center. Then they’ll pick up a traditional brush and learn to write and paint their own Chinese characters and landscapes with real ink on authentic rice paper. Tickets to this program include Museum admission and families are welcome to visit the special exhibition Chinese American: Exclusion/Inclusion.

Reading Into History Book Club: Left for Dead: A Young Man’s Search for Justice for the USS Indianapolis by Pete Nelson
Sunday, April 19, 3-5pm
Ages 9-12; Free with Museum Admission.
When 11 year old Hunter Scott started asking questions about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis during WWII, he never imagined he would rewrite history. Join the meeting to discuss this book and the true story of the disaster as discovered by Scott. We’ll be joined by Mike Thornton, New-York Historical Society Curator and naval history expert, who will answer kids’ lingering questions about the harrowing history of the USS Indianapolis sinking. Families will also explore naval artifacts from WWII.

At the Kids’ Table with Sarah Lohman: How the Kitchen Has Changed
Saturday, April 25, 2-4pm
Ages 8 and up; $16 (members $10).
What does eighteenth-century Tupperware look like? How about a nineteenth-century toaster? In this program, you'll go on a family scavenger hunt in the New-York Historical Society to uncover the kitchens of the past. Then we'll cook together, making cinnamon toast like folks would have 200 years ago—we'll do everything from SCRATCH, grinding sugar and churning butter by hand. You'll find out how much the kitchen has changed from 1815 to 2015!
