As an up-and-coming young actor, Thomas G. Waites quickly rose through the ranks and was a rising star when he was chosen to play the role of Fox in Walter Hill's cult classic 1979 film Warriors. In fact, he was meant to be the star of the picture, but after one too many arguments with the director, not only was his role diminished, but he was fired from the picture. Thus, he developed a reputation for being difficult to work with, and his career never quite reached the heights it might have. Personal problems and a taste for drink didn't help matters. It was actually the latter that led to some of the former. Although he was able to make some other great films with talented directors and stars, including The Thing, directed by John Carpenter and starring Kurt Russell, he never had the career he might have had without all that.

Lucky Man is Waites' own story told in his own words as well as through his music. He plays the guitar and sings accompanied by a three-piece band. The four share a good rapport, and the songs are nice and quite meaningful to Waites' story. However, it is far more interesting to hear him tell his story. Thus, it would have been nice to have more of that. Otherwise, it was an interesting and at times relatable story and a cautionary tale not only for young aspiring and/or up-and-coming performers, but also for anyone leaning toward an overdependency on any kind of chemical substances or alcohol.

And that's our view. Tune in tomorrow for Tips for Tuesday.
