From the 1960s on, Black fashion designs began shifting away from the more Eurocentric styles and more toward reflections of their heritage. The current exhibit at the Museum at FIT covers this fashion diaspora. It examines fashion's role in shaping culture.
The exhibit includes fashions from Africa. Europe, North America, South America, and the Caribbean. It is divided into several different themes including Reaching for Africa, Mothers and Motherland, and A Black Atlantic. Designers represented include Patrick Kelly, Junior Orina, Thebe Magugu, and more.
There is no charge for visiting The Museum at FIT and no ticket is necessary. For more information about the exhibit, visit www.fitnyc.edu/museum/exhibitions/africas-fashion-diaspora/index.php
Tune in tomorrow for Theater Thursday.
