When an artist sets out to investigate the line between art and madness, he finds himself in a dangerous dance with existential questions:
Why create art?
Does it heal or harm us?
Must artists suffer?
What’s the price of so-called “genius?”
Methods in Madness is a theatrical experiment + autopsy + installation that aims to examine the creative process and correlations between mental health and artistry. Helmed by multidisciplinary artist Corey Allen—whose visual art and performances, inspired by the works of James Baldwin, Beauford Delaney, Nina Simone, and Julius Eastman, anchor the installation—Methods in Madness will evolve daily.

After fleeing New York City for the countryside during a global calamity, Rebecca finds herself alone in her family’s neglected farmhouse. She must do her best to manage the anxieties and expectations of her aging relatives as they clash over whether to sell the old house, all while surrounded by doorknobs and relationships that are both in desperate need of repair.
Thistles keenly explores family secrets, queerness, and the desperate desire to be accepted. Tragedy lurks as emotions are buried under ancestral floorboards.

New York Premiere
Caress them in a way that hurts a little
Choreography by Omar Román de Jesús
Music by OKRAA “Ola De Luz”
To say Caress them in a way that hurts a little is to embrace the paradox of intimacy: the simultaneous desire for gentleness and the need for a touch that stirs the soul. It speaks to the complexity of human connection, where vulnerability and passion intersect. This work evokes a longing for a depth of sensation that transcends mere physicality, delving into the realms of emotional intimacy and the bittersweet ecstasy of love.
Like those playground kids at midnight
Choreography by Omar Román de Jesús
Music by Jesse Scheinin
In a world that often seeks to stifle individuality, Like Those Playground Kids at Midnight stands as a beacon of defiance, encouraging all to embrace their uniqueness and challenge the boundaries that confine them. It invites us to traverse the enigmatic landscapes of desire, identity, and aspiration, all while advocating for the liberation of the soul.
Los Perros del Barrio Colosal
Choreography by Omar Román de Jesús
Music: Homenaje al Gran Lucho by Lucho Bermudez and Liebestraume, S541/R211: No. 3: Nocturne in A-Flat Mayor by Franz Liszt
Through the exaggerated mannerisms of daytime television, the 8 characters of Los Perros del Barrio Colosal take us on a wild romp through the challenges of creative decision making. Diving dramatically into the adventure of an imagination yet to be physicalized, they ask us to consider the far side of the moments when our ideas threaten, with disjointed urgency, to swallow us whole.

November 2024: Build a Baggywrinkle
Join the Seaport Museum for an all-ages activity where you get to learn about the common ships’ tool known as a baggywrinkle––a soft covering used to protect sails from damage. You’ll get to see a real example from one of the Seaport Museum’s historic ships, and then learn how to make one!
Traditionally, baggywrinkle is made from unraveled ropes, but on weekends throughout November, you can come aboard the 1885 tall ship Wavertree and learn to make these important tools from scratch using colorful yarn. This fun craft makes for unique maritime-inspired Autumn decoration!
This family activity will be offered on Saturdays and Sundays from November 2 through November 24. Access to Wavertree involves climbing a few stairs, walking up an angled gangway, and descending a few stairs onto the deck. The lower decks are accessible via stairs, while the upper deck requires navigating steep ladder-like stairs.

Timely hands-on activities and engagement stations for visitors of all ages provide creative opportunities that illuminate history and life at sea while enhancing your visit to the Seaport Museum’s galleries, the tall ship Wavertree, and the lightship Ambrose.
