Books: The Telegram & Psychology According to Shakespeare

Today we are recommending The Telegram by Debbie Rix. A chance encounter in the street introduces Elizabeth to the father she never knew. Even now that she knows him, her father is still a mystery. Why has he used more than one name and what does he really do in his government job? His current wife, Violet is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery and find out what he and his family have been hiding.

This is an intriguing slow-burning mystery. It is full of lovely characters like Elizabeth and Violet and a few not-so-lovely characters as well. The bond that forms between Elizabeth and Violet is touching. It's too bad not all blended family relationships go this well.

The book is extremely well-written in that the resolution actually makes sense and makes everything that happened before make perfect sense as well which is not always true with many mysteries and thrillers that often turn out to be disappointing. The conclusion to the mysterious is unpredictable and shocking. All in all, it's a satisfying read.

Today we are talking about Psychology According to Shakespeare by Philip G. Zimbardo and Robert L. Johnson. This book by two psychology professors is about how deeply Shakespeare understands human nature and how brilliantly he portrayed various psychological disorders in his plays even though in his day they did not understand psychology like we do now. For example, Lady Macbeth demonstrates obsessive-compulsive disorder; Hamlet demonstrates reason, intuition, and more; and Richard III demonstrates mental illness among other things. Throughout the book, the authors detail how various plays and characters illustrate particular psychological concepts. If you are interested in psychology, you will love this book.

Movies: The Lady of the Lake

Today we are talking about The Lady of the Lake. This is a thriller about a lake that is allegedly haunted by the spirit of a Native American woman who chooses one male victim to kill every year. On the whole, this film is disappointing, It moves slowly, it doesn't make a lot of sense for the most part, and you don't get to know that much about most of the characters which there are a lot of making them hard to keep track of.

The Lady of the Lake is available for purchase on DVD or for purchase or rental digitally.
