Theater Thursday - Season of the Witch & Golem Owned a Tropical Smoothie

We received complimentary tickets to Season of the Witch for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Season of the Witch

Where: 54 Below
             254 54th St.
             New York, NY

When: This event occurred on October 30, 3024

Last night, as part of their Halloween holiday-themed programming, 54 Below presented Season of the Witch. The show was not really so much about witches but offered the songs of iconic female singers like Steve Nicks, Dusty Springfield, Kate Bush, and more. Songs included "Shadows of the Night", Running Up That Hill", "Spooky" and more.

The evening was hosted by Mikyalya Petrilla of Saturday Night Live and Victoria Bost of the South Pacific National Tour.  Participants included Hannah Beatt, Amy Jo Jackson, Sarah Steel, and more plus one token male, Robert Peterpaul. Highlights included Taylor Iman Jones's tearing down the house with her version of "Black Magic Woman" sung while accompanying the band on her guitar and Amy Jasmine Rogers, Broadway's soon-to-be Betty Boop, with a rousing version of Heart's "Barracuda". All in all, it was an evening about powerful women both the ones singing and the ones whose songs were being sung

And that's our view. For their final night of Halloween programming tonight, 54 Below will present Spirits and Sounds: A Halloween Concert Featuring Maria Wirries and Ehime Ora at 7:00 PM and The Spooky Spectacular at 9:30 PM. Who: Recommended for Ages 12 and Up

When: Through November 10, 2024

A character who allegedly is not related to the popular movie character of the same name owns a smoothie franchise that a bigger conglomerate is trying to take over in this crazy lark of a musical. Either way, you don't have to know anything about those films or even like them to enjoy this delightful show.  Packed with amusing songs some of which may even stick in your head including the terrific title number, the show is just a joyous adventure from beginning to end. It's chock full of crazy situations and fittingly populated with over-the-top performances and even a few puppets.

Even though the puppetry aspect may appeal to children, the show is extremely inappropriate for them. It is loaded with adult situations, inappropriate characters, and depictions of drug usage among other things. However, for anyone who is not a child and does not find any of these things triggering, the approximately two-hour running time will pass by in a hilarious breeze.
