Honeyland is purported to be a coming-of-age story set against the background of the turbulent 1960s. There is not much of a story, however, It is mostly more of a song cycle with just about every possible 60s-related cliche you can throw in. Topics covered include the Vietnam War, the fear of nuclear annihilation, Nixon's election, pot smoking, and more.
The songs are fine, some are nicer than others but they are mostly not too memorable Some of them are a little too perky and sound like they are straight out of a children's morning TV show especially a song that is literally called "When I Grow Up." Other songs are much darker and/or otherwise inappropriate for children. Even "When I Grow Up" takes a dark turn toward the end of the song making it not actually suitable for children as well.
Yet, if you take the show for what it is more of a song cycle, you can still enjoy it. The singing voices are lovely. There are some gorgeous harmonies as well. So just go and listen to the beautiful singing and don't think about the rest of it.
