Vangeline Theater/New York Butoh Institute has partnered with ELF and the legendary New York artist Machine Dazzle to create a new duet titled MAN WOMAN, a collaboration between Butoh dancers Akihito Ichihara (Sankai Juku, ELF) and Vangeline. Ichihara and Vangeline will finish creating MAN WOMAN during a Mercury Store Residency between October 14 and 18, 2024 in NYC.
MAN WOMAN is expected to premiere in the US in New York in 2025. Emmy-Award winner Machine Dazzle created original costumes for the piece and Ray Barragan Sweeten composed the soundscape.
MAN WOMAN is a duet about love articulated through the language of Butoh.
The piece is a reimagining of Japanese photographer Eikoh Hosoe’s eponymous photo book from 1960. Choreographed and performed by Butoh dancers Akihito Ichihara and Vangeline, the duet explores the tension between male and female forms by way of an intimate encounter. The iconic poses from Hosoe’s work serve as inspiration and leitmotifs for this sculptural piece; like photographs coming to life, the dancers weave in and out of the poses without making physical contact. The tension found in negative space rises, a commentary on distance and connection in intimate relationships that culminates in a single touch.

15) Brooklyn Children’s Museum Launches Competition Inviting New Yorkers
to Name Its Tarantulas!
The competition runs throughout October.
Brooklyn Children’s Museum (BCM) may be best known for its exhibitions, cultural celebrations, and play spaces, but it is also home to a number of live animals who belong to its living collection. This October, BCM is inviting New York’s children to participate in a creepy, crawly competition to name the Museum’s newest animal friends: three tarantulas!
Two of the tarantulas are female and one is male, but that need not limit anyone’s creativity. When proposing name ideas, contest participants are encouraged to draw inspiration from the borough of Brooklyn—its past and present, as well as from New York City wildlife, heroes in STEM and the natural sciences, famous Brooklynites, beloved story book characters—or your own beloved neighbor from the block!
To enter name ideas into the contest: Teachers, families, and caregivers with children are encouraged to visit the Museum’s new STEM maker space, Nature’s Engineers to try this month’s hands-on project, “Arachnid Architecture,” where kids will construct their own spider webs and test their designs to see how many ‘insects’ they can capture. While in Nature’s Engineers, kids will be able to view the Museum’s new spiders, three green-bottle blue tarantulas, and come up with a fun name for each one, which they will write on a postcard and submit in a collection box. Naming ideas will be collected throughout the month in Nature’s Engineers.
The last day to submit name ideas will be on Sunday, October 27 at the Museum’s Halloween celebration, to which visitors are encouraged to come dressed in spider costumes.
On October 31, Halloween Day: Brooklyn Children’s Museum will announce the top finalists on its Instagram channel (@bcmkids), where the Museum’s followers and members of the public will be able to vote for their favorites in a poll.
The Museum will announce the winning names on November 1, reintroducing the newly christened tarantulas to their legions of fans.

MCC Theater auditions for the 2024-2025 MCC Youth Company programs will be held on Tuesday October 8 from 4:30pm – 6:30pm. Auditions for both labs will take place on site at MCC Theater (511 W 52nd St). An additional audition for available Performance Lab spots will be held on Tuesday January 14 from 4:30pm to 6:30pm.
MCC also announced that new for this year, in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Youth Company, members will be paid a $250 stipend for completing their lab. MCC has made it possible for youth company members to participate in both Playwriting and Performance Labs this year which means a student can earn $500 for completing the full year.

Through the unique experience of childbirth, which also considers abortion as childbirth, the call of life and death is revealed, creating a poignant reflection on the essence of existence. Until the beginning of the 20th century and even today, in some countries, childbirth has been a critical moment in the lives of many women, as it is a thin line between life and death. This crossroads at the moment of giving birth is presented on stage as a journey where a woman immerses herself in different spaces and times. With the memory and presence of other women who accompany her on the journey of childbirth, she transforms herself into different organic matter, to remember and honor the origin of life, of her life,, of the one she is about to give birth to and the journey to death.

The fall season at Playland will kick off with doggie tricks and treats with the reopening of Playland Beach to our four-legged visitors on Monday, October 7. With stunning views of the Long Island Sound and a sprawling coastline, Playland Beach offers the perfect playground for canine companions to relax and play through the end of April 2025. Guests are welcome to bring their pups from dawn until dusk, with each owner permitted to bring up to three dogs.
As the seasonal celebrations continue to unfold, Playland is hosting its “Howl-O-Ween” Pet Parade on Sunday, October 20, from 12 noon to 2 p.m. on Playland’s boardwalk and beach to get into the Halloween spirit. Pet owners are encouraged to dress up their fur babies in their spookiest or silliest costumes, as well as show off their own creative outfits for a paws-itively adorable Halloween parade. Walter’s hot dog food truck will also be parked on the boardwalk.
In addition to pet-friendly activities, Playland will welcome guests to enjoy the Kiddyland Fall Fun October Weekends, providing extra access to Kiddyland rides and select food vendors during the final three weekends of October from 12 PM to 6 PM on Saturdays and Sundays – which is the first time these Kiddyland rides have been open and available during fall weekends. Admission is $15 per person, while holders of 2024 season passes can enjoy the festivities at no additional cost.

For the first time in New York City history, non-English speaking New Yorkers and tourists will be able to walk into a theater and enjoy a play in their native language – thanks to a new partnership between The Theater Center, home to New York City’s longest running play, Perfect Crime, and the AI powered translation tech startup, Wordly. Over the past two years, the teams behind the Off-Broadway theater complex, the long running murder mystery, and the innovative new translation platform have worked together in painstaking fashion to achieve a theatrical first: utilizing AI powered real time translation technology to present a play in 60 different languages - so that anyone from anywhere can understand every word of what happening in the show, as it unfolds. https://www.wordly.
Simultaneous translation has been widely used in business meetings, church services, and universities, but not in live plays — until now. Audience members attending Perfect Crime simply scan a QR code, use their own earbuds or disposable ones provided by the theater, and select to hear the show in the language of their choice. This approach ensures that foreign language speaking theatergoers can fully understand and enjoy the show, breaking down language barriers and enhancing the cultural experience.
For those individuals with hearing impairments or hearing loss, this innovative new app will also provide real-time captioned text, a significant improvement over the pre-programmed audio devices currently available in theaters.

OURfest: National Coming Out Parade and Festival/Resource Fair, is home to the first National Coming Out Parade in the United States. This year will be our second annual parade! OURfest stands for Our Uniting Resilience and these new events are being created to amplify the resilience of our people, our individual journeys in coming out, and how we hold and take up space everyday.
OURfest: National Coming Out Parade
Will take place on Saturday, October 12th, 2024, from 4:00pm to 6:00pm, from 5th and Market to Broad and Locust. The parade will feature a mix of curated and designed floats, community organizations and live performances that spotlight the vibrancy of the LGBTQIA+ community in Philadelphia, the suburbs and across America. Look for themed sections to showcase youth and families, sports and recreation, professional leaders, pioneers and grand marshals, arts and culture, drag artists, and other groups. The community cheer section features the record breaking 400 foot rainbow flag that debuted in June during Pride Month. The final route for the parade is being finalized and will be shared in a future update. Also, look for a parade line-up to be shared closer to the event!

OURfest: National Coming Out Festival/Resource Fair
Philly Pride 365, a program of Galaei brings together the city’s top LGBTQ+ organizers to produce a dynamic festival – and one of the single largest outdoor festivals of the year in Philadelphia.
The Gayborhood will come to life again in honor of National Coming Out Day/Weekend. OURfest: National Coming Out Festival will take place on Sunday, October 13th, 2023, from 12:00pm to 7:00pm, with resource fair and family zone from 12:00pm to 4:00pm, and last call for mobile bars outdoor service and food trucks at 6:00pm. The festival will spread out across the Gayborhood from 13th and Walnut down to 13th and Pine, form Locust to 12th, then from there to 12th and Pine, with other select roads closed around the festival footprint.
This year's resource fair and street festival will feature art and music from the community, in a celebration that combines the uniqueness of Philadelphia and showcases the diverse talents of Philadelphia’s LGBTQIA family, friends, and neighbors.
The vibrant location of the Gayborhood, the stronghold of Philadelphia’s LGBTQ community, provides a historic backdrop for 200+ grassroots organizations, CBO’s, charities, artists and makers, entertainers, restaurants and bars, food trucks, vendors and small businesses to provide innovative programming, dynamic structure, community resources, education, food and drink and family fun. The full lineup will include performances, speeches, with the potential of some surprise guests.
