1) A Gaga Guide to the Lower East Side

Courtesy of Spincycle NYC

A GAGA GUIDE TO THE LOWER EAST SIDE, a walking tour of the Lower East Side with an emphasis on the exploits of his favorite pop star and downtown denizen Lady Gaga.  For months, the former reality TV “star” has been faithfully guiding inquisitive minds past the boyhood home of George and Ira Gershwin, to the sites of former Yiddish theaters and delis, and through Instagrammable graffiti strewn parks, right to the birthplace of Mother Monster. But a Yelp review has set off a chain reaction that threatens to take today’s tour in a totally unexpected direction.

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s timeless, seminal novel comes to the Broadway musical stage for the first time ever. The Great Gatsby transports audiences to the lavish Roaring Twenties. The story follows eccentric and mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby, who will stop at nothing in the pursuit of the lost love of his youth, Daisy Buchanan. Through its fascinatingly nuanced characters – driven by complex inner lives, erupting with extravagance and longing – this epic tale has always been destined to sing. Now, it finally comes to life on the greatest American stage, through an electrifying jazz and pop-infused score, and a grand production befitting the 21st century.

Here, wealthy landowners want your land, local magistrates want your confession, unpopular reverends want your respect but more importantly your firewood, and everyone wants someone to be punished for something. Meanwhile, several local children try to make sense of a hysteria they find themselves at the center of. Oh! And the newest villagers, the Bloodkravens are here too. They are confused about it all.

13) THE NEW BOOK FROM THEATER HISTORIAN BEN WEST

THE AMERICAN MUSICAL:

EVOLUTION OF AN ART FORM

TO BE RELEASED ON APRIL 1, 2024

THIS COMPREHENSIVE HISTORY DETAILS THE

EVOLUTION OF THE AMERICAN MUSICAL OVER THE COURSE

OF SEVEN NEWLY DEFINED ERAS

Routledge, an imprint of the Taylor & Francis Group, announced today that the new book from musical theater artist and historian Ben West, The American Musical: Evolution of an Art Form, will be released on April 1, 2024. This comprehensive history of an American art form offers a detailed and definitive portrait of the American musical’s artistic evolution over the course of seven distinct, newly defined eras, with a unique perspective gleaned from research at more than twenty different archives across the United States.

Individual in both its approach and coverage, The American Musical traces the form’s creative journey from its 19th century beginnings, through its 20th century maturation, and to the turn of the 21st century, shedding new light on a myriad of authors, directors, and craftspeople who worked on Broadway and beyond. This book actively addresses the form’s often overlooked female and African-American artists, provides an in-depth accounting of such outside influences as minstrelsy, vaudeville, nightclubs, and burlesque, and explores the dynamic relationship between the form and the consciousness of its country.

The American Musical is essential reading for students, practitioners, and afficionados of the American musical, and anyone with an interest in this singular form of entertainment.

Ben West is a musical theater artist and historian. In addition to his new book, he created twenty “Timeline Wall” exhibits for the Museum of Broadway that trace the history of the Broadway stage from 1732 to 2021 and highlight more than 500 productions and 100 artists. He has worked in various capacities on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and regionally, and created and directed Unsung Carolyn Leigh for Lincoln Center’s American Songbook series. West has lectured and spoken at several institutions including Yale University, University of Michigan, the Dramatists Guild, and the Shubert Organization. He is a recipient of Lincoln Center’s Martin E. Segal Award.

The American Musical (428 pages; $46.95) is available for pre-order in paperback and eBook wherever books are sold. Hardback copies are available for pre-order for libraries and institutions.

25) Works & Process Presents

The Metropolitan Opera: El Niño by John Adams

Monday, April 1, 2024

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum

Works & Process presents The Metropolitan Opera: El Niño by John Adams on Monday, April 1, 2024 at 7pm at the Guggenheim’s Peter B. Lewis Theater, 1071 Fifth Avenue, NY. Tickets $35 to Choose-What-You-Pay. To purchase tickets, visit www.worksandprocess.org.

Prior to the April 23 company premiere of John Adams’s El Niño, Met General Manager Peter Gelb moderates a discussion with members of the creative team, and cast members perform highlights from the powerful score. Eminent American composer John Adams returns to the Metropolitan Opera after a decade-long hiatus with his acclaimed opera-oratorio, an extraordinarily dramatic retelling of the Nativity, which incorporates sacred and secular texts in English, Spanish, and Latin, from biblical times to the present day.

El Niño brings together some of contemporary opera’s fiercest champions, all of whom make highly anticipated company debuts: Marin Alsop, one of the great conductors of our time, who has led more than 200 new-music premieres; soprano Julia Bullock, a leading voice on and off stage; and pathbreaking bass-baritone Davóne Tines. Radiant mezzo-sopranos J’Nai Bridges and Daniela Mack take turns completing the principal trio. The moving, fully staged new production also marks the Met debut of Lileana Blain-Cruz, Resident Director at Lincoln Center Theater, who received universal acclaim for her Tony-nominated 2022 production of The Skin of Our Teeth.
