More Theater Monday - Monty Python's Spamalot

We were given complimentary tickets to Monty Python's Spamalot for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

Who: Recommended for Ages 9 and Up

Monty Python's Spamalot is a musical loosely based on the movie, Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The show originally played on Broadway in 2005. The original production received numerous Tony nominations and won three Tony awards including Best Musical.

The current production of the show originally played at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC this past Spring. The stellar cast included James Monroe Iglehart as King Arthur, Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer as The Lady of the Lake,  and Michael Urie as Sir Robin all of whom are repeating their roles in the Broadway Cast. Alex Brightman who played Lancelot in Washington will join the cast on Broadway in January. Crackerjack performers joining the cast on Broadway include Christopher Fitzgerald as Patsy and Ethan Slater as the historian/Prince Herbert as well as Taran Killam who will be playing Lancelot until Alex Brightman takes over the role. 

With this high caliber of talent, you would expect excellent performances all around, and this cast certainly delivers on that promise. The performances are definitely as wonderful as you would think they would be. Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer in particular really gets to show off her vocal chops here even more so than she has in some of her previous roles. 

The show is one of those delightfully fun shows where the cast and the audience seem to be having an equally good time. It has been updated just enough from the initial production to make it particularly relevant and amusing to today's audiences. Even those who are not Monty Python fans can still find a lot to enjoy about this show.  However,  if you are not really into Monty Python's kind of humor, you may find the show more of a mixed bag than just a straight laugh-fest.
