Tony and Olivier Award-winning actor and songwriter Gavin Creel had never been to The Metropolitan Museum of Art…until now. War Words is a docu-play in the words of the men and women who served in the U.S. Military during the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. 7) When Jesus Divorced Me

Every divorce starts off a love story.... and here is this one. These two actors became friends during a summer in Ohio. A simple summer stock contract, after meeting online through mutual friends created a quick friendship. That friendship turned into love. They helped each other with monologues, audition packages, write shows, and travel to different cities for auditions and contracts. They eventually got married. The bride was religious and the groom was not. The groom went to an audition for a Christian Theme Park and was cast in all of their shows, including the crucifixion of Jesus. The bride was excited to see her husband slowly become religious, until...he left his bride for an actor playing Mary Magdalene. You may have heard of her.

Written in 2017, the play premiered on Broadway in 2019 at the Hayes Theater, starring Schreck as a pantsuit-wearing, ambitious 15-year-old and also as a late 40s version of herself in this hopeful, heartfelt, and endearingly funny play. Throughout the show, Schreck reimagines how the living document has affected her past and how it is shaping the next generations of Americans. She debates her way through topics found within the Constitution, including women's rights, slavery, immigration, and history, while tracing the profound relationship between four generations of women and the founding document that shaped their lives. The acclaimed show explores a document created in the Arden Theatre Company's Old City neighborhood and imagines its impact on the next generation of Americans.

The Secret World of Elephants

New exhibition explores the 60-million-year evolution of the elephant family,

their astounding minds and bodies, interactions with humans and the environment, and what we can do to ensure their survival in the world

How do elephants “hear” with their feet, use the 40,000 muscles in their trunks, or reshape the forests and savannas they live in, creating an environment upon which many other species rely? The Secret World of Elephants, a special exhibition opening at the American Museum of Natural History this fall, reveals new science about both modern and ancient elephants—including the titans of the Ice Age, mammoths and mastodons—and highlights elephants’ extraordinary minds and senses, why they're essential to the health of their ecosystems, and inspiring efforts to overcome threats to their survival.

Several life-size models, as well as fossils and casts, will illustrate elephants’ size, and videos and interactive exhibits will introduce visitors to these massive mammals’ incredible abilities. Elephants’ trunks, for example, are strong enough to pull down a tree, yet nimble enough to pluck a single blade of grass. They form close social bonds, recognizing each others’ voices, and are known to care for ill individuals and to visit the spot where a family member died. They are ingenious problem-solvers and, by eating, bulldozing, and trampling plants, digging water holes, and transporting seeds, they act as ecosystem engineers and affect hundreds of other species. Over the centuries that humans and elephants have lived together, often uneasily, elephants have been trained for war and work—and have come to represent powerful religious and political symbols across cultures.

Highlights of the exhibition include:

a full-scale model of a woolly mammoth, depicted in the process of shedding its winter coat

an interactive exhibit that demonstrates how elephants use extremely low sound waves—called infrasound—to send messages through the ground and to other elephants’ feet, which conduct vibrations up their legs and to their brains

a life-size African elephant model with a projection on one side of its body showing the skeleton of this massive mammal and providing an inside look at how it processes the huge amount of food it eats—between 300-500 pounds per day—and at elephant gestation, which can last for nearly two years, longer than any other living mammal

a life-size model of the extinct dwarf elephant with a dwarf elephant calf

touchable teeth of an elephant, a mammoth, and a gomphothere (a distant elephant relative that became extinct around the end of the Ice Age and was the only proboscidean to reach South America)

an interactive exhibit about elephant vocalization, which lets visitors listen to different elephant calls, each with its own meaning

conservation-themed interactive exhibits that examine the impact of killing elephants for ivory, how climate change is affecting elephants, and ways that humans and elephants can share the planet and reduce human and elephant conflict

The Secret World of Elephants will open to the public on Monday, November 13, 2023. Museum Members will be able to preview the exhibition starting on Friday, November 10, through Sunday, November 12.

Battery Dance is accepting applications for the 43rd Annual Battery Dance Festival, with free performances on August 11-17, 2024 at Rockefeller Park, NYC. Applications must be submitted online at https://batterydance.org/apply/. The festival application will be live from Wednesday, November 1 - Sunday, December 31, 2023.

Battery Dance Festival, New York City’s longest-running free public dance festival, was established by Battery Dance as the Downtown Dance Festival in 1982. It draws in-person audiences of approximately 2,000 people each night from the large downtown population of workers, residents, families, tourists, senior citizens and dance fans from the greater NYC metropolitan area and beyond. The Festival will be livestreamed to our worldwide audiences, reaching thousands of international viewers each night.

Battery Dance Festival provides a unique opportunity for professional dancers and choreographers in any genre to present original works of high artistic merit in a free public forum against the backdrop of the Hudson River at sunset. Past participants have included The Isadora Duncan Dance Company, New York Theatre Ballet, Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana, Citadel + Compagnie, Dancing Earth Indigenous Dance Company, SOLE Defined, and Jamal Jackson Dance Company alongside pre-eminent companies from Africa, South Asia, East Asia, Europe, South America and the Caribbean.

Application Details:

• Both individual artists and collectives are welcome to apply; you do not need to be a formal organization to be considered.
• Each artist/company can submit only one application.
• Companies that have performed in the two (2) consecutive prior Festivals (both 2022 and 2023) will not be eligible to participate this year (2024). They will regain their eligibility to apply for next year (2025).
• Duration of group works (2 or more dancers) should be between 10-15 minutes. Duration of solo works should be between 4-10 minutes. In selecting a work for consideration, please be mindful of the outdoor performance venue with minimal supplemental lighting and an audience generally not on risers. While there is side lighting, there is no overhead lighting.
• If a work exists only in-progress, please send a rehearsal video of the required length with sufficient supplemental information with which to be fairly considered. World Premiere performances and NYC debuts/premieres are welcomed and encouraged. If you are applying with a work-in-progress submission and are accepted into the Festival, you will be asked to provide a video of the completed work before final approval.
• Submissions will be reviewed by the Festival Manager to ensure their completion and suitability according to the guidelines below, and then scored separately by an independent curation panel.
• A modest honorarium will be provided to festival participants.
• For artists/companies from India or the Indian Diaspora: The all-Indian Dance Program (August 15 - India Independence Day) will be curated separately. No application is necessary.

13) Brooklyn Children’s Museum and The Culture Tree to Celebrate Diwali – the Festival of Lights – on Thursday, November 9

Brooklyn Children’s Museum and The Culture Tree will celebrate Diwali, one of the major religious festivals in Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism, with an afternoon of family-friendly activities on Thursday, November 9. The celebration occurs during the Museum’s Amazon Free Hours, which take place every Thursday afternoon from 2:00 to 5:00 pm.

Through a puppet show presented by The Culture Tree, children will learn the history of Diwali, teaching them the meaning of devotion, love, kindness, and valor. Other activities include storytime with author Navina Chhabria, a mithai (Indian sweets) making workshop by Anu Sehgal, and lantern-making in the Museum’s ColorLab art studio.

Through these activities, children will learn about Diwali, one of India’s biggest and most important festivals of the year.

16) “DIGIMON ADVENTURE 02 THE BEGINNING” NEW FILM ADAPTATION LANDS IN U.S. THEATERS ON NOVEMBER 8 & 9

This November the DigiDestined are back in theaters with a brand new movie.  Toei Animation and Fathom Events revealed today details for the U.S. theatrical release of “Digimon Adventure 02 The Beginning” as a two-day event on November 8 & 9. It is present day and the chosen children from “Digimon Adventure 02” have returned with all new adventures — but now they’re 20 year old young adults! Fans are invited to join the fun and can watch the movie in 750 theaters across the United States through Fathom Events. “Digimon Adventure 02 The Beginning” will be presented nightly at 7:00 pm local time in both English dub (November 8) and Japanese with English subtitles (November 9). Japan Society announces the release of a new online workshop, Thanksgiving- Japan Style, on YouTube.

Give your Thanksgiving feast a Japanese spin this year with shiokoji butter-brined turkey, blistered green beans and shishito peppers, and Japanese sweet potatoes. At this online workshop, Maiko Kyogoku, owner of New York-based Japanese restaurant Bessou, will teach a variety of festive recipes that bridge cultural traditions, using ingredients perfect for the season. Debuts at the Perelman Performing Arts Center

Metropolis by Marcus Samuelsson opens today inside the new cultural cornerstone of Lower Manhattan, Perelman Performing Arts Center (PAC NYC). Metropolis is a vibrant contemporary American restaurant, which draws inspiration from neighborhoods and treasured culinary traditions throughout New York City’s boroughs.

Marcus Samuelsson together with Executive Chef Ed Tinoco, Chef de Cuisine Marcelo Malta Andrade and Pastry Chef Onika Ayana Brown have created a menu that features locality through starters like a towering Farmer’s Market Platter, where seasonal fruits and vegetables are presented grilled, pickled, and fermented, alongside house-made condiments and dips, and Flushing Style Oysters, served with lemon, shiso, and XO sauce.  Main courses include Aged Long Island Duck, rubbed with a 4-year mole, foie gras and peaches; Arctic Char with uni beurre blanc, agrodolce cucumbers, and citrus; Whole Grilled Dover Sole to Share with pomme soufflé and braised leeks; and desserts such as Marble Mirror Chocolate Cake with strawberry jam.

To complement, Metropolis Beverage Director Alexis Belton (formerly of The Aviary) has crafted a cocktail list with a focus on classic and modern martinis, complete with tableside cart service, including a 50/50 made with gin & vodka, orange bitters and a twist as well as a Vesper using white lotus leaf, gin, vodka, Cocchi Americano and grapefruit.  House cocktails also include the Catskills Old Fashioned made with Overproof whiskey, New York malt and red bean caramel and the “Appletini” made with green apple, sauternes, and baking spices.

Designed by David Rockwell and Rockwell Group (PAC NYC’s Lobby and Restaurant Interior Architect), Metropolis beckons from before you enter with undulating sapele wood ribbons across the ceiling, which draw guests from the PAC NYC lobby, past a set of monumental exposed trusses to a bar, lounge, and outdoor terrace. The ribbons also coalesce in backlit nodes and drop down like chandeliers above a small performance stage, as well as the bar and lounge. Vintage area rugs add warmth and softness, while custom furniture in black stained wood or walnut have pops of burgundy that recall the performance hall seating.

Metropolis features a 135-seat main dining room, 16-seat private dining room, and 70-seat seasonal terrace, offering a serene escape in the heart of Lower Manhattan. The terrace offers a fully equipped bar, making it an ideal spot for al fresco dining, as well as exclusive private events. Metropolis will also be serving in the 30-seat lounge area fronting the lobby stage where the PAC NYC is offering free programming through out each week.  A wine bar adjacent to the PAC NYC theater presents thoughtfully curated wines, local beers, and snacks for theater-goers.

New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) presents Argentinian Latin/Pop singers brother and sister duo Pimpinela to Newark on Wednesday, November 8th at 8:00 p.m.

When brother and sister act Lucia and Joaquin Roberto Galan Cuervo first recorded and released their first single together in 1981, Joaquin wasn't convinced he wanted to start a band. But with the blessing of iconic singer Luis Aguile, the siblings stayed the course to become the legendary Argentine duo Pimpinela, purveyors of Latin pop songs characterized by telenovela-style turbulent romance and tumultuous breakups.

The duo from Argentina tapped into something special from their first album in 1981, and they've been winning over multi-generational fans ever since. From betrayal and jealousy to love and romance, their emotional ballads combine catchy Latin pop with the dramatic storytelling of a telenovela.

Following the sold-out 2021 performance of The Eyes of the World: From D-Day to VE Day, historian John Monsky returns to Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage (881 7th Ave, New York, NY 10019) on Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at 8:00PM with a new, groundbreaking performance exploring the events and legacy of World War I (The Great War) an often-forgotten conflict, but perhaps one of the most consequential events of the 20th Century.

Featuring bold musical storytelling, performed by acclaimed Broadway vocalists and live music by the 58-piece Orchestra of St. Luke’s and conducted by Hamilton’s Ian Weinberger, a generation that no longer has a voice will be properly remembered just days before we commemorate Veterans Day, established on November 11, 1918, Armistice Day.   

This unique multimedia production is structured around Monsky’s signature curation of meticulously researched history, historic flags and rare archival film and photography. Some 200 images from the National Archives have been enhanced and restored creating stunning and immersive effects. Never-before-seen footage drives home the emotion and drama of this turning point in history.

27) Theatre Communications Group Announces Plays for the People: In the Stacks 

Program to expand and diversify drama collections at libraries, educational institutions, and more 

Theatre Communications Group (TCG), the national organization for theatre is proud to launch Plays for the People: In the Stacks, a program to increase access to dramatic literature for a significant number of individuals by expanding and diversifying drama collections. With funding from the Mellon Foundation, TCG will provide $25,000 total in book credits to universities and theatre/performing arts training programs, public lending libraries, and community centers based in the U.S. (including Tribal Nations and U.S. Territories) to expand their drama collections with titles published by TCG Books. Since its founding in 1984, TCG Books has grown to become North America’s largest independent trade publisher of dramatic literature, with 20 winners of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama on its book list.

The In the Stacks program will provide fifty applicants with a $500 credit each for books published by TCG Books, including shipping costs. The credit can also be applied to the cost of access to the TCG Books Play Collection on Drama Online. The deadline for application is Friday, December 8, 2023, 11:59pm ET. The upcoming Broadway production of WATER FOR ELEPHANTS has dropped the first original song from the show’s composers, PigPen Theatre Co. The songwriting team of WATER FOR ELEPHANTS performs “Anywhere” in this new music video.  

WATER FOR ELEPHANTS features a soaring score by the acclaimed PigPen Theatre Co. (The Tale of Despereaux) and a book by three-time Tony Award nominee Rick Elice (Jersey Boys, Peter and the Starcatcher). The Broadway production, which begins previews on Saturday, February 24^th, 2024, is based on the critically acclaimed and New York Times Bestselling novel by Sara Gruen and is directed by Tony Award nominee Jessica Stone (Kimberly Akimbo).  WATER FOR ELEPHANTS officially opens on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre (249 West 45th Street) on Thursday, March 21^st, 2024.

For one week this fall, hip-hop legends Kwikstep and Rokafella gather dancers representing New York’s Poppin community for a Works & Process LaunchPAD creative residency at the Rockefeller Estate’s Pocantico Center to facilitate intergenerational transference of knowledge. See the culmination of the residency in a one-night-only show-and-tell in which audiences will get to see “Wus Poppin.” Before the program, join Lafotographeuse (Amanda Adams-Louis) for Sketching with Street Dancers Volume 7 (Animation), a 60-minute observation drawing session with two movement models in the Guggenheim rotunda.

Sketching with Street Dancers Volume 7 (Animation) is an observational drawing session that connects movement, mark making and music. The event is structured around timed drawing exercises designed for the audience (sketchers) to track, trace and transmit two dancing models’ movements on paper. The drawing session will be followed by a brief gallery walk for sketchers and movement models to see the results of their collaboration and connect in real time. 

Instructor, James “Cricket” Colter will demonstrate drawing techniques for sketchers to convey the lines, shapes, patterns, accents, articulations and gestures performed by the dancers. Noelle Salaun will serve as the timekeeper and music selector. Dance artists, Kinen (Lite Feet) and Mugen (Flexn) are the featured movement models. Both models will highlight movements that fall within the Animation family through their respective Street Dance forms. Sketching with Street Dancers was created by Lafotographeuse (née Amanda Adams-Louis) & is produced by Kut The Rug Institute. Sketching materials will be provided. Artists are welcome to bring their own pencils and drawing paper. Sketching with Street Dancers Volume 7 (Animation) is free and open to everyone. No RSVP is required.
