The recently ended production of Golden Rainbow was the third show of this year's York Theater Company Musicals in Mufti series in which they bring back shows that perhaps did not receive enough love and/or attention the first time around for a limited run. The show was originally a vehicle for Steve Lawrence and Edye Gorme. The story revolves around a down-on-his-luck father trying to raise his young son in Las Vegas. Meanwhile, his sister-in-law is convinced the boy would be better off with her.

The story is not the most original. It definitely feels like something you've seen before, and it all resolves too quickly and easily as well. However, it is still heartwarming, and the relationship between the boy and his father is quite touching, The score which introduced the standard, I've Gotta Be Me, is full of fun songs including an amusing James Bond spoof as well as a few nice ballads.

York did a nice job with the show. It was well cast and the acting and singing were definitely both up to their usual high caliber. The standout singer was the lovely-voiced Mara Davi in the role of Judy Sherman. The standout actor was Benjamin Pajak in the role of young Ally. This talented young performer came out of nowhere and has performed in three prominent roles in the last several years including as Winthrop in Broadway's most recent production of The Music Man and the title role in last season's City Center production of Oliver in addition to this one. We expect to see a lot more of this talented young performer, and we look forward to it.

And that's our view. The final show in this year's Mutif series will be When We Get There which will begin performances on October 7 and run through October 15. For more about this show or to purchase tickets, visit yorktheatre.org/on-stage/musicals-in-mufti
