2) Communion

Ripped from the headlines, COMMUNION is a one-man show about a gay Catholic school teacher who is fired when the church discovers that he married a man. His termination causes a crisis of faith, not only for himself but for his entire community. Based on the real-life story of Broadway actor and playwright Matthew LaBanca, COMMUNION spotlights themes of delusion, spiritual trauma, and hope, reminding those who would use religion to discriminate against LGBTQ people that the most basic tenet of spiritual life is that we are called to love one another.

His late wife's sister arrives and tries to bring stability to the boy's life, but unintentionally falls in love with her brother-in-law. The musical originally opened on Broadway on February 4, 1968 and ran nearly a year. It starred the married couple of Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gormé, major stars from their extensive work in the recording, television and concert industries. The musical introduced the enduring standard "I've Gotta Be Me," recorded by Sammy Davis, Tony Bennett, Michael Jackson, Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder and many others.

4) The Jester's Wife

THE JESTER’S WIFE, a Dark Ages comedy, follows the couple as confronted by evil and still afraid for their lives they now encounter other perils. Contemplating questions of survival, responsibility, and who gets to tell a story, this play effects an original blend of intelligent slapstick with medieval and distinctly Irish tinges as the Jester’s self-preserving pragmatism and his Wife’s heroic idealism spin out interesting and entertaining moral discussions. This darkly comic narrative of survivors guilt, myth making, martyrdom, and mayhem, mingle together, in ways, familiar to our present lives.

Spanning three decades in the entertainment business, Merrily We Roll Along charts the turbulent relationship between composer Franklin Shepard and his two lifelong friends — writer Mary and lyricist & playwright Charley. An inventive cult-classic ahead of its time, Merrily We Roll Along features some of Stephen Sondheim’s most celebrated and personal songs. Maria Friedman first directed the musical at London’s Menier Chocolate Factory – a production that subsequently transferred to the Harold Pinter Theatre, where it garnered the most five-star reviews in West End history before going on to win the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival.

7) What I Wore to Work

Prohibition-era New York City harlots, the hetaraie of ancient Greece, the brothel queens of 19th-century New Orleans, the courtesans of 16th century Venice, and many others in the adult entertainment industry throughout history set trends in art, literature, politics, etiquette, and shoes. Yves St Laurent rocked the fashion world in 1971 when he based a line on the style of bad girls of the 1940s. Many of the world’s most celebrated designers, including Versace, Alexander McQueen, and Vivienne Westwood, have all acknowledged their inspirations from the world’s most notorious profession. Even Barbie, who has been dressed as every worker from a dog walker to an astronaut, has her high heels firmly rooted in harlotry.

17) Kinesis Project dance theatre

to present

Capacity, or: the Work of Crackling

at

Snug Harbor Dance Festival

September 23-24, 2023

Kinesis Project dance theatre will present Capacity, or: the Work of Crackling at the Snug Harbor Dance Festival from September 23-24, 2023 at Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden 1000 Richmond Terrace, Staten Island, NY 10301. For more information, directions and the full schedule, please visit https://snug-harbor.org/event/2023shdf/.

In this excerpt of Capacity, or: the Work of Crackling – created for Snug Harbor Dance Festival – dancers in floating fabric costumes by Rebecca Kanach appear to audiences along the historic Shinbone Alley in every space visible as they traverse along walls, dance in hidden hallways and across grassy hillsides. This performance spans from mesmerizing dancing to the simple invitation to take a walk together. Capacity investigates our human capacity for joy, grief and how that relates to the natural processes of the earth's cracking. Kinesis Project's Choreographer and Artistic Director Melissa Riker has been working with the collaborative guidance of geologist Dr. Missy Eppes, exploring the parallels found in mechanical weathering and subcritical cracking.

Riker says “...sharing this dance of cracking and weathering amongst the buildings of Snug Harbor is perfectly in tune with the echo of weathered sailors who once inhabited the spaces, to the living, crackling history of the beautiful architecture surrounding us. I can’t wait to bring together audiences and performers in this fantastic site. We are so grateful to Melissa West and Snug Harbor for inviting us into the 2nd Annual SHDF!”
