Where-To-Go Wednesday - The Lilac

What: The Lilac

Where: West St.
             Pier 25

Who: All ages:

When: In the Spring/Summer to Late October

Me & Mom -  The Lilac is the only remaining steam-powered lighthouse tender. Lighthouse tenders are ships specifically designed to maintain and support lighthouses by providing supplies and more. Lighthouse tenders later became coast guard cutters.

The boat is now docked at Pier 25. Free tours are available on weekends generally from late spring until sometime in October. You can take a self-guided tour and learn about the boat and what you see through detailed posted signage. A few of the rooms are set up like they would have been when the boat was in service including the Captain's quarters. If you have questions, there are people around to ask.

Although the tours are free, donations are gladly excepted. They are hoping to restore the ship to its former glory and use it as a tool for teaching people about maritime history as well as a space for history and/or art exhibits and meetings. In fact, the boat currently houses art exhibits.

And that's our view. For more about The Lilac, visit www.lilacpreservationproject.org/

Tune in tomorrow for Theater Thursday.
