Theater Thursday - Shucked

We were given complimentary tickets to Shucked for review purposes.  Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Shucked

Where: Nederlander Theatre
             208 W. 41St.
             New York. NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 13 and Up

Me - Shucked really took me by surprise. I knew nothing about it going in, and I had low expectations, but it ended up being so much fun. It's about a small town that makes its living off of corn, and when the corn suddenly starts dying, a girl named Maizy decides to head out of town to find someone who can help. She meets a man named Gordy who agrees to come back with her for reasons of his own, and comedy of errors ensues.

This show is so funny. It had me laughing out loud the whole time although if puns and sexual innuendo are not for you then you probably will not enjoy this. There are also a couple of really sweet romances.

The cast is incredibly talented. Although the music wasn't my personal favorite, it was enjoyable. The solo by Alex Newell in the role of Lulu in the first act particularly stood out to me.  Overall, if you're looking for a lighthearted joyful theatre experience, I'd recommend this show.

Mom - Upon just hearing about the show, Shucked, and learning that its plot revolves around corn, it may sound kind of dumb. However, there is so much more to this show than that. It is hilariously funny although if you don't like corny puns and sexual innuendo, then not all of the humor is for you. It's got a lot of heart and good family vibes including both real and found family.  It's full of a lot of extremely fun songs. The acting and singing are both great. All in all, it's delightfully exhilarating, and if you don't give it a chance just because it sounds stupid, you are really missing something special.
