Regretfully, So the Birds Are is a quirky little show about the eccentric Whistler family. Illy has bought a piece of sky in preparation for the human-to-sky migration. Mora is determined to find her birth mother even if she has to ask every single person in Cambodia. Neel has gone off on a tone-deaf journey to Nebraska. There is a lot more ridiculousness to this crazy but fun story as well. However, at the heart of all the hilarity, the playwright has some very real things to say about identity and sense of self and how we shape ourselves by what we think we know about ourselves even though it might turn out that what we think we know is completely wrong.

The cast of this production is stellar. It includes Kristine Neilsen who has won a couple of Obie Awards and a drama desk award for previous appearances in Off-Broadway productions as well as Sasha Diamond and Shannon Tyo who made quite memorable recent performances in a production of Peerless at 59E59 Theatres. Every performance in the show is uniformly excellent. Each actor does such a fabulous job of not only mining every possible drop of humor out of their characters without hamming it up, but also getting to their heart and making us care about them. It is impossible to pick a standout because they are all so good. If there is an Off-Broadway award for ensemble, this group should definitely be a contender, and if not maybe there should be one.
