More Theater Monday - Proud

Proud is based on a true story of four peacocks that escaped from the Philadelphia Zoo. The story is quite originally told from the point of view of the peacocks. It imagines their escape as a planned secret mission. However, it seems to really  be a commentary on the human race and how they don't really appreciate this planet enough,

The bird's point of view is carried so well through the show that all the human character's wear strange masks and are indistinguishable from one another. Only the birds have distinct personalities and can be told apart. There is Tom; the leader, Dick, the intellectual one; Harry, the somewhat haughty and always hungry one; and Pat the youngster.

The quartet of actors does a wonderful job of believably portraying peacocks and incorporating movements that feel true to the species into their performances. The costumes also help in this regard. They are wonderful and colorful like real peacock feathers and especially beautiful when put on full display when the birds spread their feathers which they do quite often.

The play does feel a bit long, and the fact that it  does not have an intermission does not help in this regard. However, it is definitely an interesting and uncommon experience seeing a show told from this unique perspective.
