Theater Thursday - Kimberly Akimbo

We were given complimentary tickets to Kimberly Akimbo for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Kimberly Akimbo

Where: Booth Theatre
             222 W. 45th St.
             New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 12 and Up

Kimberly Akimbo is a quirky little show with a lot of heart. It is full of eccentric characters that are delightfully played by the very talented cast led by the wonderful, Victoria Clark who convincingly plays a 17-year-old even though she is in her 60s. Especially noteworthy in a cast full of standouts is Bonnie Milligan who is at her badass best in the role of the unscrupulous, Aunt Debra. If she doesn't at least get a Tony nomination, it will be a crime.

The show is incredibly funny, but it is also full of pathos. The songs are the same. At times they will make you laugh. At times they will touch your heart. They are as unusual as the show and include titles like "How to Wash a Check" and "Our Disease".

The premise of the show may seem a little farfetched. It revolves around a character suffering from a rare disease that causes her to age rapidly. Even though she is only 17, she looks like she is in her 70s. This disease is actually quite real although extremely rare. Despite the unusual subject matter and peculiarity of the plot and characters, anyone who dismisses this show as not worth seeing is really missing something special.
