BAMkids Celebrates MLK Day: Courage Takes Creativity

Co-curated by the BAMkids Parent Advisory Circle

Fishman Space, Hillman Studio (BAM Fisher) 321 Ashland Pl., Brooklyn, NY

Mon, Jan 16, 10:30am—3pm

Ages: 6—11

Free

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. encouraged the world to use time creatively, saying that "the time is always ripe to do what is right." Knowing that courage takes creativity, this family-friendly program, co-curated with the BAMkids Parent Advisory Circle, immerses young people in art forms that have been important expressions of social justice movements. Art has helped raise awareness, build community, and challenge power structures. Throughout the day, families can drum, dance, craft, color, and even put themselves in moments of civil rights history from Dr. King's lifetime. Visit BAM.org for more information.

Soul Energy Dance

10:30am, 11:15am, 12:15pm, 1:15pm & 2:15pm

When we take up space and dance for liberation together in street dance activism, community organizer Shamell Bell argues that we lift frequencies and vibrations that draw people in to hear our message. Join BAM teaching artists Enya-kalia Jordan and Okai Fleurimont as they lead us in dancing for liberation, teaching songs and steps from Guinea in West Africa and Haiti.

Picture Yourself Making History

10:30am—2:30pm

In collaboration with BRIC, choose a photo of a civil right moment and put yourself in the picture in this hands-on activity.

Wave Your Flag

10:30am—2:30pm

If there's a protest, there's usually a flag. A flag's shape, colors, and symbols can visually help communicate our values and promote solidarity with others who feel the same way. Visual artist Lexy Ho-Tai leads an activity exploring our individual and collective ideas of home or world-building, creating our own flag using textiles.

Wear Your Values

10:30am—2:30pm (while supplies last)

If you had the world's attention, what would you say? What's something you care about that you wish more people also cared about? Draw your answer on a BAMkids MLK Day t-shirt or tote and decorate it with the help of the Hip Hop Closet. T-shirt design by BAMkids parent advisor Hectah Arias.

Chardi Kala: Music to Uplift & Ignite

10:45am, 11:45am, 12:45pm & 1:45pm

In Punjabi, Chardi Kala refers to a sense of eternal optimism, even in the darkest of times. In the Sikh community and around the world, music has been used to lift our spirits and inspire us to take action for justice and dignity. Join Sonny Singh and his band of dhol, drums, brass, and electric guitar for an experience of rhythmic solidarity and hope.

Beloved Community Circle

2:45pm—3pm

Dr. King said, "Love is creative and redemptive. Love builds up and unites; hate tears down and destroys… the aftermath of the love method is reconciliation and creation of the beloved community." To close our program, we gather together to celebrate the creative power of Love with music and movement in a powerful declaration of everyone working towards King's beloved community.

Activity Station

7) Hong Kong Ballet
presents
the United States Premiere of
Romeo + Juliet
January 13-14, 2023
at New York City Center

Hong Kong Ballet (HKB) presents the U.S. Premiere of Romeo + Juliet on Friday, January 13 at 8pm and Saturday, January 14 at 2pm at New York City Center, 131 W. 55th Street (between Sixth and Seventh Avenues) NYC. Tickets begin at $35 and can be purchased online at nycitycenter.org, by phone at (212) 581-1212or in person at the New York City Center Box Office.

Ancient grudges between triad families. Passion and tragedy. The iconic balcony scene. Set in Hong Kong in the turbulent 1960s, Shakespeare’s timeless tale of star-crossed lovers is given a fresh and thought-provoking retelling in Septime Webre’s new Romeo + Juliet. Juliet’s father is an unrelenting Shanghainese tycoon who is determined to marry his only daughter off to a wealthy gweilo (Caucasian), and Webre’s original choreography seamlessly incorporates intense street battles rendered in traditional Hong Kong-style kung fu. Accompanied by Prokofiev’s dramatic score, retro Hong Kong is vividly brought to life in the epic love story’s captivating dancing, complex drama and sumptuous cheongsams. This brilliantly imagined adaptation is especially relevant for contemporary audiences as it fuses dance and drama against a backdrop of a world in flux.

of boundary-breaking dance experiences
Free One-Hour Company Classes on Zoom and In Person
Open to All Dancers at an Intermediate to Advanced Level
Every Monday & Wednesday in January 2023

In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company established a new dance institute through Zoom, The Bridge. Now, classes are also being offered in person. The Institute’s aim is to bring together dancers, choreographers and directors around the world to experience the master teachers of color whose practices are embedded in the community and are focused on advancing the art of dance that transforms the personal, environmental and metaphysical spaces. Dancers interested in attending the virtual session can join the class by registering here.

The Bridge is now hybrid, with special classes being offered simultaneously in-person and online. These classes are aimed at professional dancers, and interested participants can register here for the live, in-person experience.

As a dance institute, The Bridge will invite world renowned as well as up and coming dancers and choreographers to come to guest teach the class. Advanced/Intermediate level professional or pre-professional dancers who are looking to explore beyond their own boundaries and looking for new dance experiences are encouraged to participate. The core program is based on Nai-Ni Chen’s Kinetic Spiral, which is a cross-cultural dance vocabulary that integrates the Chinese martial arts philosophy in TaiChi with contemporary dance practices she studied in America. Guest artists will cover a wide range of folk and classical dance styles.

The Bridge Class schedule:

Monday, January 9, 2023 | Andy Chiang (Tai Chi and Qi Gong) at 10am ET
Embrace the Yin and Yang through Tai Chi, a gentle exercise that helps you to move with focus and purpose. We will begin the class with a Qi Gong exercise called the 8 Section Brocade which is one of the most ancient forms of Qi Gong known in China. After that we will do the simplified 8 movement Tai Chi. No experience needed.

Wednesday, January 11, 2023 | Greta Campo (Ballet) at 10am ET
Tapping into the creative energy of the universe through Kinetic Spiral. Nai-Ni Chen's signature technique is based on the principle of ever-changing universal forces of Yin and Yang to cultivate the dancer’s vital energy Chi (Qi) allowing the dancer to achieve higher performance with less effort. By focusing on breathing and images, Kinetic Spiral also balances the spiritual, mental and physical energy of the dancer. The Kinetic Spiral Technique forms the foundation of Nai-Ni Chen’s style of cross-cultural movement and embodies her efforts to work at the intersection of culture and race, advocating for equity with grace and power.

Monday, January 16, 2023 | Seyong Kim (Ballet) at 10am ET
Join ABT Certified Professor Seyong Kim for an amazing ballet experience.

Wednesday, January 18, 2023 | Rio Kikuchi (Gyrokinesis) at 10am ET
Gyrokinesis® is a slow, fluid, exercise practice based on the natural elements of spinal movement. By gently working the joints and muscles through rhythmic and undulating movements, coupled with calming breathing patterns, the exercises stimulate the body's internal organs while corresponding breathing patterns stimulate the nervous system, open up energy pathways, and oxygenate the blood.

Monday, January 23, 2023 | Katy Alaniz Barnhill (World Dance Fusion) at 10am ET
Katy's full body warm-up utilizes techniques from multiple cultural dance genres. The focus is placed on isolation and circular movement- giving dancers the best tools to get into their body for any dance. With great consideration for alignment and safety Katy teaches strength and stretch exercises. In the second element of the class we focus on rhythm, or warming up the brain. The exercises pull rhythms from Cuban, Kathak, Flamenco, Turkish Roman and Morrocan Guedra. The dancer makes polyrhythms using claps, stomps and your voice to better embody different rhythms. Katy will then teach her choreography containing moves from specific styles of dance. The technique of each respective cultural dance form is explained and how to transition from one to another.

Wednesday, January 25, 2023 | Yuri Ogasawara (Layla) (Belly Dance) at 10am ET
This class will combine yoga and strengthening exercises, followed by isolation and belly dance combinations.

Monday, January 30, 2023 | Katy Alaniz Barnhill (World Dance Fusion) at 10am ET

Underground Uptown Dance Festival
In the Guggenheim’ Subterranean Frank Lloyd Wright-Designed Theater
January 12-17, 2023

See a Sneak Peek of 2023 Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage Where Works & Process will Serve as Dance Curator

Works & Process presents the Underground Uptown Dance Festival, a festival of commissioned street and social dances taking place in the Guggenheim’s subterranean Frank Lloyd Wright-designed theater from January 12-17, 2023.

Rare in the field of dance, let alone in the creators' traditions, beyond presenting fee, all projects will have received longitudinal support. With some spanning four years and across multiple residencies, Works & Process will have provided living wage fees of $1,050 per week, 24/7 devoted studio access, adjacent housing, access to health care insurance enrollment, performance fees, and iterative performance opportunities. Inspired by the circular architecture of the Guggenheim, the cyphers prevalent in street dance, and social environments where these performing art traditions were germinated, the works being presented endeavor to weave audiences and artists together. These commissions amplify the innate qualities of dance to physically connect and facilitate the embodiment of joy and community. Purchase tickets at worksandprocess.org.

During the summer of 2023, Works & Process at SummerStage will bring select artists from the Underground Uptown Dance Festival to neighborhood parks in all five NYC boroughs as curator of dance for Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage.

A living archive of five generations of New York City club dancers, UNDERSCORED is a multi-faceted project rooted in the intergenerational stories and memories of NYC underground club heads. Commissioned by Works & Process and created by the dancers of Ephrat Asherie Dance and NYC club legends ranging in age from 27 to 79, UNDERSCORED is a collaboration that celebrates and explores the ever-changing physical and musical landscape of New York’s underground dance community. Building on the intergenerational transference of knowledge and culturally reflective movement that happens night after night on dance floors across the city, UNDERSCORED shares lived experiences, stories, and vibes from seminal parties, including David Mancuso’s the Loft, Larry Levan’s Paradise Garage and Timmy Regisford’s Shelter and the experiences of legends Archie Burnett, Michele Saunders, and Brahms “Bravo” LaFortune.

Tap, percussive dance, samba, house, and live music come together in I Didn’t Come to Stay, commissioned by Works & Process and described by the New York Times as “An unforced crowd-pleaser, original and true to itself.” Brazilian tap dancer and choreographer Leonardo Sandoval and bassist and composer Gregory Richardson lead eight dancers and a five-piece band in a performance that explores tap’s lineage and connections to other Afrodiasporic forms. Together the pair embrace shared roots across the diaspora and reflect on racial and cultural identity, while also celebrating the joy, strength, depth, and virtuosity of Black dance and music.
