12) Swinging on the Seine:
Searching for Amour in 1960's Paris
Sunday, July 31st at 7pm at Joe’s Pub

Comedian and cabaret artist D'yan Forest (currently the Guinness World Records Title Holder for Oldest Working Female Comedian in the World) has always been ahead of her time. In 1963 she moved to Paris as a young, innocent, recently divorced Bostonian looking to make it big in the Parisian cabaret scene. Immersing herself in the glitz, glamour, and scandalous nightlife of the era, the naive D’yan was transported from a sheltered suburban existence to a life filled with underground sex clubs and the swinger’s scene as is witnessed in her new cabaret show Swinging on the Seine: Searching for Amour in 1960's Paris.

D'yan has been performing professionally since the 1960’s. She started in Boston and then made her way to New York where she sang and played the piano at popular venues and legendary hotels across the city, she also played the resort circuit in the Catskills during its heyday. D’yan then went on to perform in Paris which eventually led her to performing all over the world with notable appearances in Israel, Greece, Scotland, and even Ethiopia. After 9/11, D’yan started doing stand-up comedy along with her ukulele because, “The world needed more laughter, and I needed it too!” You can often see her performing at Gotham Comedy Club in New York City. In June 2022, the Guinness World Records recognized D’yan as the oldest working female stand-up comic in the world. She has lived in the West Village for over 50 years.

D'yan is celebrating her 88th birthday by performing, Swinging on the Seine at the iconic Joe’s Pub on Sunday on July 31st, at 7pm (doors open at 6pm). The audacious D’yan officially turns eighty-eight in the middle of the show. Through stand-up comedy and song, accompanied by her trusty ukulele, D'yan takes you back to her first years in the City of Love. She also shares stories of her current life as an octogenarian, and returning to Paris to live (in her early 80’s), and making it big once again.

Joes Pub is located at 25 Lafayette Street (at Astor Place), New York, NY 10003. Subway: R/W to 8th Street, 6 to Astor Place. Tickets are $15 plus a two-drink or $12 food minimum, available at www.publictheater.org/productions/joes-pub/2022/d/dyan-forest. ANNOUNCES PROGRAMMING FOR

ECO-FORWARD FESTIVALS

TRASHFEST & DARKFEST

JULY 30 – AUGUST 7, 2022

AT THE TANK

The Tank (Meghan Finn, Artistic Director; Johnny G. Lloyd, Director of Artistic Development) announced programming for their eco-forward festivals, TrashFest and DarkFest, from Saturday July 30 – Sunday August 7, 2022. Both festivals will take place in-person at The Tank NYC (312 West 36th St New York, NY 10018).

For years, The Tank has hosted DarkFest - a week of shows that do not use conventional theatrical lighting in an effort to reexamine how we can make theater more sustainable. With the pandemic forcing their physical theater to close, they challenged that idea further with the first annual TrashFest in 2020. It is often difficult to wrestle with the environmental impact our daily lives and our work can have - especially in theater, where so many resources are needed to develop sets, props, and costumes that are only used for a short amount of time. TrashFest centers work that not only produces no waste, but reuses materials discarded as garbage while DarkFest celebrates innovative performance that utilizes self-sufficient and alternative energy sources.

More information about the programming is below. Tickets begin at $10 with free offerings and are available by visiting https://thetanknyc.org/trashfest-2022.

37 Incidents Between Victoria and Her Brain examines the complex relationship between our minds and ourselves. Like most of us, Victoria often feels disconnected from her brain. As she matures, Victoria learns and adapts. She creates both good and bad coping mechanisms that she must confront and shift as she reaches different stages of her life. Through familiar and a few not-so-familiar rites of passage, we see Victoria deal with love, life, death, and trauma and how her brain supports or undermines her, seemingly without her knowledge.

NATURE WE & I

Created, performed, and produced by Greg Kamilaw

August 5 at 7PM; August 7 at 3PM

Nature We & I, a solo performance work for voice and guitars, is a love letter to a New York City most don’t see. A city as a part of nature. Manhattan, New York City, one of the worlds capitals of business, finance and the arts. Busy people, from all walks of life, and every corner of the world, with ambitions and dreams big and small are drawn to this city. The City confronts these busy people with the reality of their talents and the opportunities of the moment. People must make choices; what are they willing to endure? What will they compromise? How will they adapt? Will they evolve, grow, change so they can reach their goal, fulfill their dreams? Will they persevere? Will they outgrow their dreams, and settle for a way to make a living? And what are the Cost of their life's pursuits? The cost of an individual’s busy way of living. What is the cumulative cost of humankind’s way, humankind’s busy way of living? The cost on others, on our future generations, and on nature. Are we individuals aware of the effects we are having on the rest of nature? The nature that surrounds us, the nature we are all a part of. How much do we care and what will we do when confronted by the consequences of our busy way of living? Nature We & I, asks, explores, and answers these questions.

Guillermo Laporta is the audio-visual lighting artist.

The play’s done—but don’t go yet: time for the best part, the Talkback! The dramaturg’s moment... btw, what do dramaturgs actually do? Well, sometimes, they can predict the future.

The Mannequin Play is a folk-rap musical devised by NYC drag performers and members of the performance art collective “I Don’t Wanna See That?!!?!” The play follows a family of three mannequins, Sale, Glossy, and Liver, working at a Rainbow Shops in Bushwick as their store closes and ultimately separates them. The three are thrust into unfamiliar worlds and are forced to create new families while they try to reunite with each other.

Orchestrations are by Derek Walsh and Projection Design by Lisa Marie Montgomery.

Theater Resources Unlimited (TRU) announces their annual Producer Boot Camp: Essentials of Successful Self-Producing. This unique workshop, geared to the specific multi-tasking challenges of self-producers, has been reformatted and rethought for virtual presentation to make it accessible to theater artists beyond New York. It will take place on Sunday, July 31, 2022, 12pm-5:30pm ET. Registration is $85 for TRU members and $125 for non-members. To register for the virtual event, visit truonline.org/events/successful-self-producing-2022/.

Come learn to view your creative work from a business perspective and understand the need to think differently. Make smarter choices, not only now but for the future of your show. It all seems a little overwhelming at times, but we will break it down into easily digestible bites. When you know what you're doing, it can actually be fun and fulfilling!

The boot camp will be led by TRU executive director and writer-producer Bob Ost, and guest speakers will include:
  • dramaturg/director/producer Cate Cammarata of CreateTheater.com;
  • entertainment attorney Eric Goldman;
  • marketing expert Monica Hammond of Big Leap Brands, taking your show to the next stage;
  • production advisor/strategist and producer Blair Russell of Show Shepherd, a strategic theatrical development company, and producer (Slave Play, off-Broadway's long-running immersive Sweeney Todd);
  • self-producing playwright Phil Olson, a national award-winner with 18 published plays performed in over 400 cities in seven countries around the world.
