The first act of Sugarbelly and Other Tales My Father Told Me is the tale of Sugarbelly. The charismatic Guy Davis mesmerizingly weaves her tale. He sings songs, he plays numerous guitars and banjos, he even throws in a little bit of medicine show and more. The story completely draws you in and holds your attention.
In the much shorter second act, we learn that the story of Sugarbelly is not an old folk tale at all. In fact, Mr. Davis wrote the story himself loosely based on a true story he heard from his family. He not only shares the little he knows about the real story but he shares stories about his own family as well. For the most part, he manages to keep it interesting and not just because he is the son of Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis, but because his stories are timely and relatable for many people full of racism, and powerful people taking advantage of their power as well as the struggle between good and evil and more.
