What: Broadway By the Year: Almost on Broadway
Where: Town Hall
123 W. 43rd St.
New York, NY
Who: All ages
When: This event took place on Monday, June 27, 2022
The third Broadway By the Year concert of the season recently took place at Town Hall in New York City. The theme of this edition was popular shows that played Off-Broadway but never quite made it to Broadway. Shows represented included the longest-running show ever, The Fantasticks; musical revues like, And The World Goes Round, and even shows by well-known composers that never had a Broadway run including three by Stephen Schwartz alone; Children of Eden, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and The Baker's Wife. Songs included My Boyfriend's Back from Beehive, Denial from Newiscal the Musical, and If We Only Have Love from Jacques Brel is Alive and Living in Paris as well as three songs from various editions of Forbidden Broadway; Liza, Goulet, and Phantom/Merman; and much more. This time around almost every singer had a special connection to the material whether they were actually in that show (Kelli Rabke, The Baker's Wife; Jason Graae, Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah; and more), they were the wife of the composer (Christine Andreas, Johnny Guitar), or they were the daughter of one of the original stars (Chrystal Joy, Beehive) These connections made the show feel just a little bit more special than usual. All in all, it was another lovely evening of music and reminiscing.
And that's our view. The last Broadway By the Year concert of the season will take place on Monday, September 19, 2022. This final concert will present an overview of the history of Broadway Song and Dance. It's promised to be the most ambitious Broadway By the Year concert yet! You won't want to miss it!
