Theater Thursday - The OK Trenton Project

We were given complimentary access to view the OK Trenton Project for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: The OK Trenton Project

Where: Mill Hill Playhouse
              205 E. Front St.
              Trenton, NJ

Who: Teens and Up

When: Through February 27, 2022

In 2017, a group of teenagers from Trenton, NJ participated in a Summer camp program at the Grounds for Sculpture, Sculpture Park and Museum, in Hamilton, NJ wherein they created a sculpture out of pots and pans showing a hand giving the OK gesture.  After the sculpture was placed at an intersection in the city, it created a firestorm of controversy by people anonymously claiming that it actually depicted a gang signal. Consequently, it was quickly removed. In their provocative new play, The OK Trenton Project, Trenton's Passage Theater Company examines this event and its aftermath. The play was created after numerous hours of interviews as well as extensive research regarding the event.

This show could not be more timely. At the present time, when the monster of censorship is rearing its ugly head in numerous states across the nation, it is the perfect moment to examine issues, such as, who determines what is acceptable and what exactly is arts purpose anyway. While the play does not offer any easy answers and really it couldn't because there aren't any, it does a good job of presenting a balanced view of all sides of the issue. Its small five-member cast does an admirable job of playing a wide variety of characters, most of whom are actual people, involved in the controversy. If you are tired of seeing another endless retread of some breezy musical, and you want a show that will make you think this one certainly fits the bill.
