Tips for Tuesday - Books - When You Get the Chance & Podcast: The Untold Stories of Broadway

We may have been given complimentary copies of any books and/or other products mentioned below for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

Books: When You Get the Chance

Today we are recommending When You Get the Chance by Emma Lord. This utterly charming book is a gender-reversed Mamma Mia story.  Instead of trying to find out which one of three different men is her father, Mia is trying to figure out which one of three different women is her mom. She has been raised by her Dad and her aunt but when her dad won't let her go to the prestigious drama school she secretly applied to, she decides to seek out her mom hoping her mom will be on her side. She is determined to figure out who her mother is even if it means part of her plan puts her in constant contact with her high school drama club nemesis, Oliver.

Mia is a really relatable character. She can be hotheaded and stubborn, but she is dedicated and fiercely loyal. Her sudden unstoppable bursts of emotion where the rational side of her brain just shuts off (which she calls her Millie moods) is something that almost anyone can relate to. It is so sweet the way her relationship with Oliver evolves and develops. In fact, all of the relationships in this book are really touching and sweet, and there a quite a few romantic relationships that do develop in this book so if you are a fan of romance you will really enjoy it. If you are a theater nerd, you will really enjoy all the theater references and the fact that a large part of the plot does, in fact, revolve around the theater. On the whole, it is just a delightfully engaging read.

Podcast: The Untold Stories of Broadway

Podcasts like TV series can be such a time commitment. One podcast can have numerous seasons with multiple episodes so even if you binge numerous episodes or even a whole season at once, it can still be very time-consuming. However, if you are looking for an extremely interesting theater-related podcast that will not take up a lot of your time, you might want to try Jennifer Tepper's The Untold Stories of Broadway podcast. Tepper is a producer, the programming director at Feinstein's/54 Below, and author of The Untold Stories of Broadway book series. The book series takes a deep dive into the history of different Broadway theaters. The podcast expands on that by getting the inside scoop regarding four different theaters. the St. James, the Circle in the Square, the Longacre, and the Marquis from four different people each of whom has a special realtionship to one of the four theaters.  The entire podcast consists of only 9 episodes of approximately a half hour each. Whether you're a history fan or a theater fan, you are not going to want to miss it!

And that's our view.  Tune in tomorrow for Where-To-Go Wednesday.
